SOFTBALL

Topsail 6, Laney 3

After falling behind 3-1 after three innings, the Pirates scored five unanswered runs to complete the season sweep and remain in the hunt for the Mideastern Conference title.

Senior center fielder Tyesha Williams put Topsail (7-1) on top for good with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Olivia Visconti hit a one-out double and Sydney Hartgrove followed with a walk. Both runners scored on the double from Williams that reached the center field fence.

“I went up to the plate with a clear mind and positive thoughts,” Williams said. “I just wanted to do my job and it came out well.”

Williams later crossed the plate on a two-out double from Jaylyn Noble to increase the lead to 5-3. Noble scored the final run when Summer Hall’s single was misplayed in the outfield.

The top four hitters in the Pirates’ lineup – Zoey Vincent, Visconti, Hartgrove and Williams – went a combined 6-for-13 with four RBI and five runs scored.

After giving up three runs over the first three innings, Topsail pitcher Emma Neeley settled into a nice groove. She allowed only two baserunners over the final four frames and ended the game with her 10th strikeout.

“If you look at all our games, you will see that Emma gets stronger as the game goes on,” Topsail coach Eric Phillips said. “She waited a few years to get her opportunity and she’s shined between last year and this year.”

Laney (5-3) grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning with some aggressive baserunning.

Makenzie Curry singled and Mack Murnane reached on an error. Both runners advanced one base on a passed ball. Belle Nance followed with a strikeout, but the third strike was dropped. Catcher Rylee Reuter was forced to make a throw to first base to retire Nance and that allowed Curry to score and Murnane to advance to third.

Ali Bunch plated Murnane with a groundout to put the visitors in front. A two-out double from Regan Stewart followed by a single from Kendyl Elliott in the third inning increased the advantage to 3-1.

Elliott took the loss despite striking out six batters and walking only three in a complete game.
