Lauren Longbottom and Kenleigh Todd both registered double-doubles to help the Patriots open the season with a home win.

Longbottom finished with 22 assists, 10 digs, eight aces and a pair of kills. Todd put down a team-high 14 kills to go along with 10 aces, six blocks and five digs.

WCA (1-0) dropped the opening set and trailed 13-8 in the second before mounting a comeback. A big service run from Longbottom put them on top 22-20 and they were able to put the set away a few points later.

Katelyn McCurry added six blocks, while libero Caroline Prease had 24 serve receptions, six digs, two aces and two kills.

The Patriots travel to Topsail on Thursday night at 6. Southeastern Homeschool (0-1) plays at Johnston County Homeschool on Friday.

Coastal Christian 3, Topsail 0

(25-8, 25-15, 25-10)

Senior Kora Beth Witzenman dished out 24 assists and added 11 digs, four kills and three blocks in the dominant road victory.

Coastal Christian (6-1) also got a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs from outside hitter Kelly McConekey. Middle Lydia Pate hit .889 with eight kills on nine swings without an error. She also had five blocks, three digs and a pair of aces.

Hannah Bloodworth and Samantha Harrell combined for 24 digs, while setter Maris Grant finished with 11 assists.

Emma Anderson put down six kills and added a pair of blocks. Mallorie Moore chipped in three kills, three blocks and three digs.  

Topsail (1-1) managed only 10 kills on 63 attempts with 12 errors. Olivia Garzellonia led the way with three kills and seven digs.  Ellee Beaman added nine digs and six assists.

The Centurions play their home opener against Cary Christian on Friday at 6 p.m. The Pirates travel to Croatan on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Patriots broke open a close contest with four goals over the final 40 minutes.

Junior forward Ben Hawes had a hat trick, including what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 44th minute

Hawes put home his final goal three minutes later to increase the lead to 3-1.

Mason Tawes sealed the victory with back-to-back goals in less than a minute midway through the second half. The junior also dished out a pair of assists.

Tiruneh Giammarino, Hayden Plotner and Burgin Neal each had one assist.

WCA keepers Calloway Upchurch and Micah Harmon registered a total of 12 saves.

Southeastern Homeschool’s (0-1) lone goal came in the 13th minute from Lucas Adkins off an assist from Noah James. Goalkeeper Davidson Good made 17 saves.

The Patriots play at East Columbus on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals host Fayetteville Homeschool on Monday at 6 p.m.

Cape Fear Academy 4, Wayne Country Day 2

After falling behind 2-0 in the opening 20 minutes, the Hurricanes found their stride and scored four unanswered goals to pick up a season-opening road victory.

Council Lancaster got CFA (1-0) on the board in the 30th minute off an assist from Cameron Arne.

Arne evened the score seven minute later, and then put home what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute. His first goal was assisted by Nikita Ivanov.

Midfielder George Wall added an insurance goal with four minutes to play. Goalkeeper Hunter Sanderford finished with four saves.

The Hurricanes return to action Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Topsail.
