VOLLEYBALL

Cape Fear Academy 3, South Brunswick 1

(15-25, 25-6, 25-21, 26-24)

After dropping the opening set, the Hurricanes rebounded nicely to pick up a season-opening road win.

Sophomore outside hitter Carolina Bariglio had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Classmate Maggie Clucas chipped in six kills, four aces, four assists and three blocks.

CFA (1-0) got a terrific serving performance from Sienna Ezzell, who finished with nine aces to go along with three kills.

Setter Cate Broderick dished out 16 assists and added three blocks, while libero Kathryn Emmart had 15 digs.

The Hurricanes host Cary Christian on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. South Brunswick (0-1) visits CFA for a rematch on Tuesday night at 5:45.

Croatan 3, Topsail 0

(25-12. 25-15, 25-19)

Alia Jones had a double-double with 27 digs and 13 assists, but the Pirates suffered their second straight loss.

Topsail (1-2) put down a total of 28 kills, including six a piece from Olivia Hatcher and Olivia Garzellonia. Leila Tellez chipped in five.

Garzellonia also had 11 digs, while Olivia Visconti added 10 digs and six assists.

The Pirates will be back in action Monday at home against Trask at 6 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Cape Fear Academy 2, Topsail 1

Henry Steven scored the game-winning goal in the 67th minute off a corner kick service from his brother, Cameron, to give the Hurricanes a hard-fought road victory.

Topsail (0-1) led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a corner kick goal, but CFA (2-0) evened the score on an unassisted goal from Cameron Arne in the 54th minute. 

The Hurricanes welcome Greenfield School on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Pirates don’t return to action until Sept. 7 at East Bladen at 6 p.m.

North Brunswick 2, Trask 2

The season opener for both teams ended in a draw.

Trask (0-0-1) got a goal a piece from Moises Gonzalez and John Roberts. Roberto Santiago dished out an assist.

No stats were provided for North Brunswick (0-0-1).

Next up for the Titans is a road match at Jacksonville on Tuesday night at 6:30. The Scorpions visit Dixon at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Topsail 7, Coastal Christian 2

The Pirates picked up four singles victories before sweeping all three doubles courts to come away with a season-opening win.

Abrielle Herbert won 8-0 at No. 6 singles and Karli Hartman dropped only one game at No. 5. Topsail (1-0) also got victories from Marci LaRowe (8-4 at No. 1) and Grace Breeden (8-5 at No. 2).

Hartman and Herbert teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. LaRowe and Breeden secured an 8-2 victory at No. 1, and Ford and Mills finished off the match with a 9-8(5) win at No. 2.

Topsail visits Laney on Thursday at 4 p.m. Coastal Christian (0-1) welcomes Cary Christian at 4 p.m. Friday.
