A sloppy game, which featured five turnovers and 17 accepted penalties, went to the visiting Vikings.

Laney (0-1) managed only four first downs and 81 yards of offense in the first half that ended with D.H. Conley leading 10-0.

A 10-play drive to begin the second half stalled at the 13-yard line and the Buccaneers had to settle for a 30-yard field goal from senior Charles Viorel that made it a one-possession game.

Middle linebacker Logan Myers recovered a fumble on the ensuing series, but Laney couldn’t capitalize and was forced to punt after its drive went in reverse.

D.H. Conley marched 47 yards in six plays to extend its lead to 17-3 following a 4-yard run from Dade-El Yauhsen with 4:13 remaining in the third quarter.

Following another fumble recovery from Myers, the Buccaneers finally found the end zone with 7:36 remaining in the game on a 29-yard pass from quarterback Ty Little to wide receiver Daren Brown on fourth-and-22. It capped an 11-play, 90-yard drive that also featured a 44-yard pass from Little to Hampton Roderick.

The Laney defense got a pair of fourth quarter stops to give the offense a chance, but both drives ended without points.

Running back Jacob Johnson had 115 yards on 26 carries, while Little went 13-for-32 for 215 with three interceptions.

The Buccaneers will try to bounce back on Sept. 2 when they travel to Lumberton at 7 p.m.

No. 6 South Brunswick 30, Richland 10

The Cougars opened the season with a victory for the fourth straight season thanks in large part to a pair of touchdown passes from Jameson Prince.

Junior running back Ethan Overton got the scoring started with a 57-yard run. South Brunswick (1-0) tacked on three more points on a 31-yard field goal to take a 9-0 lead into halftime.

Prince had touchdown passes of 91 and 13 yards in the second half to help the home team pull away.

Linebacker Brendan Hoagland came away with a pair of interceptions.

The Cougars travel to Midway at 7 p.m. Friday.

No. 9 Topsail 20, No. 10 Trask 8

Senior quarterback Jack Lambert threw a pair of touchdown passes and sophomore Elijah Hebron added another to give new coach Jack Teachey a win in his debut.

Lambert connected with Shane Mabberley for a 25-yard score on Topsail’s (1-0) opening possession to put them up 6-0.

Trask (0-1) immediately responded with a 74-yard touchdown run from Brandon Bannerman on the second play of the ensuing drive. O’Mariyan Ennis’ run on the two-point conversion put the Titans up 8-6 with 8:01 left in the first quarter.

The visitors grabbed the lead for good with 6:25 remaining in the opening half on a 39-yard hookup from Hebron to Dez Lee.

Lambert and Mabberly connected again – this time from 12-yards out – late in the third quarter to complete the scoring.

Topsail welcomes Dixon on Sept. 2, while the Titans travel to Hobbton on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Wildcats host Northside-Jacksonville on Friday at 7 p.m.
