Senior running back Demark Howell rushed for a career-high 233 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries, and the Pirates picked up their fourth consecutive victory over the Titans.

Howell had scoring runs of 24, 73 and 60 yards.

“We’ve got five offensive linemen and three tight ends that had never played a varsity snap before tonight, but they did a good job of creating an edge for our tailbacks,” Topsail coach Wayne Inman said.

After forcing a turnover on downs, Topsail (1-0) wasted little time asserting its dominance on offense. They went 71 yards in six plays, capped by Howell’s 24-yard run, to grab the lead with 4:19 left in the opening quarter.

Howell’s 73-yard touchdown run came on the first play of the Pirates’ second series. Topsail scored on its first five drives and seven of nine in the game.

Fullback Ryan Garmendiz found the end zone twice in the second half, while Kaleb Mayberry added a 19-yard touchdown to give the home team a 28-0 halftime lead.

Mayberry had 11 carries for 125 yards and Garmendiz finished with 77 yards on nine carries.

Topsail’s other touchdown was a 23-yard pass from Travis Cain to Zach Hobson on third-and-9.

It wasn’t a completely flawless game for the Pirates. They turned the ball over three times on a pair of muffed punts and a late fumble. Topsail was able to cause a turnover when Nathan Simmons came down with an interception on the final play of the first half.

Trask (0-1) finished with only 74 yards of offense, all on the ground.

Both teams are back in action next Friday at 7 p.m. The Pirates travel to Dixon, while the Titans host Hobbton.

Laney 34, D.H. Conley 24

Jacob Johnson and Eli Rivera combined for 274 rushing yards to give the Buccaneers an impressive road win.

It was Laney’s first season-opening victory since receiving a forfeit against Pender in 2014.

“We ran the ball extremely well tonight and that was one of the things we really focused on this week,” Laney coach Luke Little said.

D.H. Conley has had a winning record every season dating back to 2011, including going 34-12 over the past four years.

They were no match for the Buccaneers on Friday night. Coach Luke Little wanted his team to be physical up front and they were.

Johnson had 11 carries for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Rivera finished with 19 carries for 131 yards.

Quarterback Ty Little connected with Carson Adkins for a pair of touchdown passes. Connor Powe hauled in a 30-yard pass for the other score.

Laney hosts Lumberton on Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Hoggard 28, Northside-Jacksonville 0

The Vikings put together a dominant effort on the road, outgaining the Monarchs 466-57 in the shutout victory.

Running backs Sam Williams and Cayden Hollar each scored a pair of touchdowns. Williams finished with 18 carries for 150 yards, while Hollar racked up 93 yards on 16 carries.

Senior quarterback Sam Jones completed 16 of 26 attempts for 211 yards. His favorite target was Conrad Newman, who hauled in seven catches for 136 yards.

Hoggard (1-0) marched 70 yards in nine plays on the opening possession of the game to grab the lead for good. Williams found the end zone from the 7-yard line on first-and-goal.

Williams also scored on a 22-yard run in the second quarter. Both of Hollar’s touchdowns came from 6-yards out.

The Vikings play at Scotland County next Friday night at 7.

South Brunswick 15, Richlands 0

The game was scoreless at halftime before the Cougars found their stride.

It was the third straight season-opening victory for South Brunswick (1-0), which picked up a 7-0 win at North Brunswick last season and a 34-13 road victory over West Bladen in 2019.

Danny Parker plowed into the end zone from the 1-yard line late in the third quarter for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown.

“We’re young on offense with seven sophomore starters, but the defense held up their end of the bargain and played awesome,” South Brunswick coach Rocky Lewis said. “It took us until the second half to figure some things out in the run game and we’ve got to get our young receivers up to speed. Hopefully, there’s a big jump from Week 1 to Week 2.”

The Cougars’ defense recorded a safety to increase the lead to 9-0, and the final score came on a short run from sophomore quarterback Jameson Prince.

South Brunswick plays its home opener next Friday at 7 p.m. against Midway.

Pender 24, Lejeune 0

The Patriots scored three touchdowns before the game was called with two minutes left in the opening quarter due to a shortage of Lejeune players.

The visitors only suited up 14 players and three suffered injuries.

Running back Jadon Lee and quarterback Antonio Bea each had a rushing touchdown. The other score came on a fumble recovery from junior linebacker Kelvin Robinson.

Pender (1-0) has a bye next week. They will return to action Sept. 3 against rival Trask in a nonconference showdown.

Carolina Forest, S.C. 70, West Brunswick 41

The Trojans fell behind 28-7 after the opening quarter and could never get a defensive stop in a lopsided home loss.

It was the most points a West Brunswick (0-1) team has allowed since the school opened in 1972.

Scotland County defeated the Trojans by a score of 69-7 in the 2001 season opener.

Carolina Forest scored on the first play from scrimmage when Luke Janack raced 61 yards for a touchdown. The advantage grew to 42-14 late in the second quarter.

West Brunswick got a pair of passing touchdowns from quarterback Javan McCray to Avery Clemmons. Running back Dyland Bellamy found the end zone twice and Kevon Daniels scored from 25-yards out.

The other touchdown for the Trojans came on a kickoff return from speedster JJ Cobb midway through the third quarter.

South Garner 39, Ashley 16

The Screaming Eagles lost their 18th consecutive game to set a new school record for most consecutive defeats.

The score was tied at 6-6 after the opening quarter, but South Garner scored 20 consecutive points to build a 26-6 halftime advantage.

Next up for Ashley (0-1) is a home game against Waccamaw, S.C. on Sept 3.

North Brunswick, Whiteville suspended

Whiteville lead North Brunswick 26-13 with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter when the game was suspended due to lightning.

The game will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday. A complete recap will be posted on the site Saturday night.
