First-half goals from Caleb Bartleson and James Manning lifted the Pirates to a season-opening victory on a wet playing surface. 

Brothers Tanner and Maddox Kelly had the assists. Topsail (1-0) goalkeeper Braedy Schuerger finished with five saves.

Coastal Christian’s (2-2) lone goal came on a penalty kick from freshman Brody Wilson in the 78th minute.

Both teams are back in action Friday at the NCSCA Kickoff Classic at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. The Pirates take on Athens Drive at 2 p.m., while the Centurions face Jordan at 6 p.m.

No. 14 Wilmington Christian Academy 3, No. 12 Southeastern Homeschool 2

The Patriots built a 3-0 lead and then held off a late charge from the visitors.

No stats were provided for WCA (1-1), which plays at Bob Jones Academy, S.C. on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Lucas Adkins scored in the 75th and 76th minutes to get Southeastern Homeschool (0-2) within striking distance, but the equalizer never came. Goalkeeper Davidson Good made 10 saves.

The Cardinals host North Wake Homeschool on Friday night at 6:30.

No. 1 Hoggard 3, Pinecrest 0

Kenan Leber scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a long shot in the 15th minute.

Hoggard (2-0) tacked on two more goals in the second half, both from Stone Murrill. He converted a penalty kick in the 46th minute and finished a cross from Clark Beery in the 58th minute.

Goalkeeper Andrew Stein stopped both shots he faced to earn the clean sheet.

The Vikings take on Northwest Guilford in the NCSCA Kickoff Classic at 6 p.m. Friday at Mills Park in Cary.

No. 2 New Hanover 3, New Bern 0

The defending 4A state champions earned their second straight shutout victory.

Josue Garcia Hernandez, Chino Leon and Chris Sales each found the back of the net.

Garcia Hernandez, Joseph DeAndrade and Waller Hicks had the assists. New Hanover (2-0) goalkeeper Jhonny DePaz preserved the shutout by making three saves.

Next up for the Wildcats is a showdown against Green Hope on Friday at 4 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park on the opening day of the NCSCA Kickoff Classic.

VOLLEYBALL

No. 1 Ashley 3, No. 5 Coastal Christian 1

Outside hitter Annalyse Askew ended the match with her 16th kill to give the Screaming Eagles their first win of the young season.

Askew also led Ashley (1-3) with 24 digs. Libero Elizabeth Claire Toomer chipped in 23 digs.

Marlee Cook dished out 30 assists to go along with seven digs. Younger sister, Bella, finished with 11 kills and a pair of aces.

Coastal Christian (5-4) got a strong performance from Taylor Rivenbark, who had seven digs, six aces and five kills.

Elsa Southerland put down a team-best seven kills, while setters Maris Grant and Megan McConekey combined for 33 assists. Samantha Harrell chipped in 14 digs.

Both teams are on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles visit New Bern, while the Centurions play at Topsail.

No. 2 Hoggard 3, New Bern 0

Jenny Garner and Blair Shuffler both put down seven kills to help the Vikings give new coach Emily Coleman her first victory.

Garner hit .418 and Shuffler was at .366. Lena Cosgrove chipped in four kills.

Hoggard (1-1) heads to North Myrtle Beach, S.C. for a tournament on Saturday.

No. 6 Topsail 3, No. 12 Trask 0

(25-19, 25-9, 25-21)

The Pirates served 22 aces, including seven from Nya Coury, in the dominant victory over their county rival.

In her first action of the season, sophomore Ryan Lambert finished with eight kills on nine attempts. Sophia Smallwood had a great performance with seven kills, four aces and four digs.

Topsail (2-0) got 18 assists and two aces from Nelly-Grace Keziah. Cooper Pierce served four aces, while Rhianna Garmendiz and Olivia Garzelloni both chipped in three.

Next up for the Pirates is a road match against Dixon on Wednesday night at 6.

No. 7 Southeastern Homeschool 3, No. 8 Wilmington Christian Academy 1

(29-27, 25-19, 25-27, 25-10)

The Cardinals won a thrilling opening set and then finished off their second victory in as many days. 

No individual stats were provided for Southeastern Homeschool (2-0).

Wilmington Christian Academy (2-1) was led by senior Kenleigh Todd’s 13 kills and six aces. Katelyn McCurry added four kills and two blocks, while Georgia Taydus dished out 15 assists.

The Cardinals host North Wake Homeschool at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Patriots are back at home against Living Water Christian on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Hanover 5, Cardinal Gibbons 4

Sophomores Sophia Catino and Hannah Davis clinched the impressive road victory with a dominant 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

Catino, the reigning Coastal Preps Player of the Year, had a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles. Davis won by a score of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.

New Hanover (4-0) also got singles victories from Lucy Dimock (6-4, 6-4 at No. 3) and Elle Harmon (6-1, 6-2 at No. 5).

The Wildcats open Mideastern Conference play at Hoggard on Thursday at 4 p.m.
