The Pirates won the final three points of the fifth set to secure a hard-fought home victory.
After a Croatan service error tied the score at 13-all, Topsail (2-2) took the lead on a kill from outside hitter Ryan Lambert. Setter Hannah Losey ended it with an ace.
The back-and-fourth fifth set had 10 ties and 11 lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points.
Lambert ended the opening set with a crosscourt kill. The Pirates jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the second set and continued to pull away. Payten Bracey served back-to-back aces to put Topsail up by two sets.
Next up for the Pirates is a home match against Dixon at 6 p.m. Thursday.
No. 7 New Hanover 3, New Bern 0
(25-17, 25-20, 25-16)
Maddie Sawyer hit .353 with a team-high 10 kills, and the Wildcats picked up a fourth consecutive victory.
Sawyer also served three of New Hanover’s (4-0) 12 aces. Jordyn Blount finished with four.
Lilian Rempel finished with six kills. Chloe Stein put down five kills to go along with nine digs.
Setter Lillee Moore had a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Justine McCague handed out nine assists.
The Wildcats host Coastal Christian on Thursday at 6 p.m.

A hat trick from Hunter Lofland guided the Trojans to their second victory of the week.
West Brunswick (2-1) hosts White Oak on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Freshman goalkeeper Peter Sandoval was excellent in the defeat, finishing with 16 saves.
Trask (2-3) plays Raleigh Charter in the NCSCA Kickoff Classic at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday at 6 p.m.
Richlands 3, No. 8 Pender 1
Irving Garcia scored off a cross from Aidan Murray in the 22nd minute to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead, but the host Wildcats scored three unanswered goals to rally for the victory.
Pender (1-2) hosts Lakewood on Monday at 6 p.m.
