Junior Caden Pierce buried a penalty kick in the 35th minute to give the Screaming Eagles a win in the debut of coach Nick Gigliotti.

“This was truly our first game, because we didn’t have have any scrimmages,” Gigliotti said. “The boys came out here and did a job. We’ve got a lot to work on, but it was really nice to see what we can do.”

The teams were evenly matched and each side created several quality scoring chances. Both goalkeepers – Ashley’s Alejandro Sepulveda and Coastal Christian’s Brandt Webster – had terrific performances.

Freshman forward Nick Cenatiempo drew the foul that gave the Screaming Eagles (1-0) the penalty kick.

“I was really happy with Nick’s movement and decision making,” Gigliotti said. “He was involved in everything we did well, and he’s going to continue to blossom as the season goes on.”

Coastal Christian (1-3) nearly evened the score with six minutes remaining, but Sepulveda made a diving save to turn away a header.

Ashley hosts Cape Fear Academy on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Centurions are back in action Friday at 2 p.m. against Voyager at the NCSCA Kick Off Classic in Raleigh.

Laney 3, Croatan 2

The Buccaneers scored a pair of second half goals to secure a season-opening road win.

The contest was tied 1-1 at halftime. Gavin Dengate, Will Hinshaw and Noah Williams each scored for Laney (1-0).

Benton Tucker and Ben Arbogast each dished out an assist. 

Three goalkeepers – Arbogast, Ryoto Sugawara and Charlie Viorel – saw action and combined to make eight saves.

The Buccaneers square off against Wakefield at 4 p.m. Friday at the NCSCA Kick Off Classic in Raleigh.

Cape Fear Academy 4, Greenfield School 1

After allowing a quick goal, the Hurricanes grabbed control and put home four unanswered goals to remain unbeaten.

Adam Politi evened the score in the sixth minute off an assist from Cameron Arne.

Arne scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal four minutes later. He tacked on a second goal in the 18th minute. George Wall and Luis Alvarez had the assists.

CFA’s (3-0) final goal was scored by Politi off an assist from Alvarez in the 22nd minute.

Junior goalkeeper Hunter Sanderford finished with five saves. 

The Hurricanes host High Point Christian on Friday evening at 5.

New Hanover 7, East Bladen 1

Six Wildcats scored in the lopsided road victory.

Senior Charlie Letson found the back of the net twice and added an assist. Cheeto Miranda dished out a pair of assists for New Hanover (3-0), which has outscored its first three opponents 18-1.

Jonathan Leon Didier, Haze Matthews, Liam Davis, Aidan Payne and David Godin also scored.

The Wildcats led 4-1 at halftime before adding tacking on three more goals.

Payne and Christian Mullins both had an assist, while goalkeeper Jhonny DePaz finished with a pair of saves.

Next up for New Hanover is a showdown against Cardinal Gibbons on Friday at 2 p.m. at the NCSCA Kick Off Classic in Raleigh.

West Brunswick 1, Whiteville 0

Goalkeeper Kyle Wagner stopped all four shots he faced to earn the clean sheet.

West Brunswick’s (1-1) lone goal was scored by Osler Aguilar off an assist from Alexis Chavez.

The Trojans host St. Pauls at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Coastal Christian 3, New Hanover 1

(25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17)

Seniors Kelly McConekey and Lydia Pate tied for a team high with 10 kills and Hannah Bloodworth finished with 25 digs in the home win.

McConekey completed her double-double by adding 13 digs. Pate also had six aces and a pair of blocks. 

The opening set was tight with Coastal Christian (8-1) holding a slim 22-20 lead before winning the final three points. McConekey had a kill and Pate served back-to-back aces.

New Hanover (0-1) led the second set 12-10 before the Centurions took control. 

The visitors were able to force a fourth set by building a 17-13 lead and holding on.

Coastal Christian middle Mallorie Moore won seven straight service points to finish off the victory. The run featured four of her six total aces.

Kora Beth Witzenman finished with 22 assists, seven kills and four digs, while Maris Grant dished out 14 assists. The Centurions also got five kills a piece from Emma Anderson and Elsa Southerland along with 15 digs from Samantha Harrell.

New Hanover (0-1) was led by Ali Blackwell, who had nine kills and a pair of aces. Sarah Collins added eight digs, seven kills and two aces, while Mary Moore finished with 10 digs, five kills and four aces.

Next up for Coastal Christian is a home match against Laney at 6 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats host North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Cape Fear Academy 3, South Brunswick 0

(25-15, 25-19, 25-21)

Sophomore Maggie Clucas put down a team-high 12 kills to go along with 16 service points, four assists, three aces and one block to lead the Hurricanes to the season sweep.

CFA (2-0) swept South Brunswick (0-2) on the road last week.

Carolina Bariglio added 13 service points, 12 digs, nine assists, seven kills and six aces. The Hurricanes also got 16 assists and three aces from Cate Broderick as well as 11 digs from Kathryn Emmart.

Sienna Ezzell served five aces and put down three kills.

CFA welcomes High Point Christian Academy on Friday night at 5. The Cougars travel to Topsail on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Laney 3, South View 0

(25-16, 25-18, 25-18)

Brooke Osterhoudt had a terrific performance for the second straight night, finishing with 14 kills and 12 digs.

Laney (3-1) also got six kills a piece from Jamie Wurtzbacher and Isabel Sandstrum. Wurtzbacher chipped in 10 digs and four aces, while Sandstrum added five digs.

Corina Vale led the team with 20 digs to go along with three aces. Mack Murnane (13 assists and 12 digs) and Nicole Dickerson (15 assists and 11 digs) both had a double-double.

The Buccaneers play at Coastal Christian on Friday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS

Ashley 6, Coastal Christian 3

The Screaming Eagles opened the season with a hard-fought home victory.

Alexis Doran picked up a 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 win at No. 3 singles to give Ashley (1-0) a 4-2 lead heading into doubles.

Emerson Shuttleworth won 7-6(1), 7-5 at No. 4, Megan Rogers picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 5, and Aspen Sawyer held on for a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6.

Doran and Shuttleworth teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Rogers and Sawyer dropped only one game at No. 3.

Coastal Christian (1-2) got comfortable singles wins from DK Britt (6-2, 6-0 at No. 1) and Evelyn Kent (6-1, 6-0 at No. 2). They joined forces for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Ashley hosts North Brunswick on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Centurions host Fayetteville Christian on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Cape Fear Academy 6, St. David’s School 3

Taylor Garriott cruised to an 8-0 victory at No. 3 and the Hurricanes won five of six singles matches to remain unbeaten.

Liza Wells (8-3 at No. 2), Elle Harmon (8-6 at No. 4), Tyler Beacham (8-4 at No. 5) and Blythe Crocker (8-2 at No. 6) also had singles wins for CFA (3-0).

Garriott and Crocker had the lone doubles win by an 8-5 score at No. 3. 

The Hurricanes host Rocky Mount Academy at 4 p.m. Thursday.
