GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Laney 60, No. 5 Ashley 33

A 20-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters helped the Buccaneers pull away for good and snap the Screaming Eagles’ 20-game Mideastern Conference winning streak.

Junior point guard Jada Simpson led all scorers with 18 points, including 10 in the first quarter.

Freshman Aniece Lewis added 11 points. Brooke Sommer chipped in nine and Taylor Chism had eight.

“We have really good pieces that can all do different things,” Laney coach Ashley Jones said. “We’re always trying to search for that next pass to get an even better shot, and they are learning really well as we go along.”

Laney (5-0, 1-0 Mideastern) got off to a fast start by making its first four field goal attempts to build a 10-0 lead less than a minute into the contest.

The advantage was 32-15 at halftime, but Ashley (4-1, 0-1) opened the third quarter on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to 10 points following a MacKenzie Morton layup with 3:20 remaining in the quarter.

The Screaming Eagles didn’t score again until their was 3:20 left in the fourth quarter. By that point, they trailed by 30 points.

Marlee Cook scored a career-high 17 points in the loss.

The Buccaneers play at Pender on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. Ashley is back at home Friday night at 6 against West Brunswick.

No. 2 Hoggard 53, No. 7 West Brunswick 25

A season-high 18 points from junior guard Anya Massey lifted the Vikings to a lopsided home victory.

Massey finished 6 of 10 from the field, including four 3-pointers. She also hit both her free throw attempts and added six assists and five rebounds. 

Hoggard (4-1, 1-0 Mideastern) also got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Madeline Elgart as well as eight points from Jadah Armour.

Lexi Steed and Anna-Hollis Pitt both chipped in six points and combined for 12 rebounds.

The Vikings, who travel to Topsail at 6 p.m. Friday, led 23-3 after the opening eight minutes.

West Brunswick (3-2, 0-1) visits Ashley on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 4 Topsail 52, No. 11 South Brunswick 39

Lexie Dawson finished with 17 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds in the road win that kept the Pirates unbeaten.

The sophomore had 10 points in the opening half to help Topsail (5-0, 1-0 Mideastern) build a 31-21 halftime lead.

Brianna Jones added 13 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Carolina Coria had 11 points and five of the team’s 16 steals.

South Brunswick (2-3, 0-2) was led by Summer Rainwater, who scored 12 points. Brooke Moore added nine.

The Pirates welcome Trask at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, while the Cougars hosts Whiteville on Dec. 20 at 6 p.m.

No. 3 New Hanover 55, No. 6 North Brunswick 11

Andrehya Shuford had another big performance with 26 points in the dominant home victory.

New Hanover (3-0, 2-0 Mideastern) scored 19 points in the second quarter to build a 29-6 halftime lead. The advantage ballooned to 45-6 after three quartes.

The Wildcats are off until Jan. 4 when they host Ashley at 6 p.m. North Brunswick (5-2, 0-1) travels to Laney on Friday night at 6.

Cary Christian 44, No. 10 Coastal Christian 40

DK Britt scored 14 of her game-high 17 points in the second half, but the Centurions weren’t able to rally.

Coastal Christian (3-6) fell behind 9-2 midway through the first quarter and trailed 26-17 at halftime.

Bryna Barton chipped in 11 points. The Centurions travel to Wake Christian Academy at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 4 Laney 65, No. 10 Ashley 35

The Buccaneers led from start-to-finish and got a game-high 17 points from forward Joe Bachman.

The junior asserted his dominance early with a putback 37 seconds into the contest. He had 14 points in the opening half to give Laney (4-0, 1-0 Mideastern) a 34-18 lead.

The advantage grew to 48-22 following a pair of free throws from Shea Corbett with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter.

Mike Milholland finished with 14 points, while Chris Rodriguez also reached double figures with 10.

Ashley (1-4, 0-1) got a team-high 12 points from Trent Smith.

The Buccaneers play at Pender on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles host West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 2 Hoggard 64, No. 12 West Brunswick 41

Ten players scored for the Vikings in a 23-point victory.

Hoku Fisher finished with 14 points and Shane Hawkins added 13 for Hoggard (5-0, 1-0 Mideastern), which built a 16-2 lead following a 3-pointer from Parker Crittenden midway through the opening quarter. 

The Vikings finished with six 3-pointers. Alonzo Dyson added nine points, while Crittenden and Sam Jones both had seven. 

Carson Pope drained three 3-pointers en route to a team-high 11 points for West Brunswick (2-2, 0-1). Kevon Daniels also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Vikings visit Topsail on Friday night at 7:30, while the Trojans play at Ashley at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 1 New Hanover 72, No. 8 North Brunswick 46

The Wildcats scored at least 16 points in each quarter to cruise to another dominant victory.

Khalil Genwright led a balanced attack with 14 points. New Hanover (4-0, 2-0 Mideastern) also got 11 points a piece from Mikhail Pocknett and James Jones. 

Lenier Pocknett added nine points and Josh Aldrich hit a pair of 3-pointers for his six points.

The only North Brunswick (5-2, 0-1) player to reach double figures was Justin Freeman, who scored 10 points.

The Wildcats take on Corinth Holders on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The game will be play at Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville.

The Scorpions travel to Laney on Friday night at 7:30.

No. 6 Topsail 50, No. 13 South Brunswick 37

The Pirates outscored the Cougars 34-13 in the second half to rally for a road win.

Ethan Humphries connected on three 3-pointers en route to his team-high 13 points. Topsail (3-2, 1-0 Mideastern), which trailed 24-16 at halftime, also got 11 points from Demark Howell and nine from George Nohava.

The Pirates went 17 of 21 from the free throw line, including a perfect 6-for-6 fourth quarter performance from Alec Nohava.

South Brunswick’s (1-4, 0-2) Caleb Bernard led all scorers with 14 points, but only four in the second half.

Next up for Topsail is a home game against Trask on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Cougars are back at home against Whiteville on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

No. 9 Southeastern Homeschool 73, No. 14 Wilmington Christian Academy 45

Jayden Johnson and Brantley Springer combined for 39 points as the Cardinals picked up their third straight victory. 

Johnson was 10 of 15 from the field en route to his game-high 21 points. Springer made 8 of his 12 field goal attempts and finished with 18 points.

Southeastern Homeschool (5-2) scored 21 points in the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach.

Blake Batts and Brock Boehling both chipped in eight points, while Eric Nyberg added seven.

WCA (3-7) was led by Tiruneh Giammarino, who scored 18 points.

The Cardinals play at East Wake Homeschool at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Patriots host Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

No. 3 Cape Fear Academy 50, University Prep Academy 39

A terrific defensive effort led the Hurricanes to their fourth consecutive victory.

CFA (5-2) trailed 16-15 after the opening eight minutes, but the held the visitors to 23 points over the final 24 minutes.

Vytas Nausedas scored 11 of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. The Hurricanes also got nine points from Markus Pastorcic-Straun as well as six a piece from Jack McErlean, Caden Bariglio and Chatham Lambiotte.

CFA takes on A.C. Flora in the Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C. on Dec. 27 at 5:20 p.m.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Four events were decided by less than a second in an exciting Mideastern Conference meet.

The closest finish of the evening came in the 100 breaststroke where Topsail’s Grace Holmes finished in 1:16.57 to barely out-touch Peyton Neathery of New Hanover, who had a time of 1:16.59.

Laney’s Anna King (1:01.14) edged Ashley’s Bailey Swails (1:01.45) in the 100 freestyle.

The meet-opening 200 medley relay was also a close finish, but the Laney team of Madi Joy (backstroke), Jules Vidal (breaststroke), Austin Gerock (butterfly) and Liz McQueen (freestyle) won in 1:58.34.

Joy was victorious in the 100 backstroke (59.94) and 200 freestyle (2:04.74), while Vidal won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:42.37.

King and Vidal were joined by Molly Woodall and Kiley Canter on the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:07.84).

Ashley was led by Kinsey Ginsberg, who picked up three victories. She touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (26.06) and 100 butterfly (1:02.59).

She was joined by Bailey Swails, Jessica Stogner and Caroline Furbay on the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.25).

Furbay cruised to a 13-second victory in the 200 IM by finishing in 2:16.18.

BOYS SWIMMING

Topsail 282, Ashley 192, Laney 150, New Hanover 74

at UNCW

Topsail swept all three relays and picked up victories in six of the eight individual events to cruise to the meet win.

Liam McBride, Ryan King, Collin Fletcher and Forrest Hoover teamed up to win the 200 (1:35.11) and 400 (3:32.48) freestyle relays.

Fletcher also swam the freestyle leg on the 200 medley relay that won with a time of 1:55.48. Joining him were Tristen DeLeon (backstroke), Porter Cockrum (breaststroke) and Drew Monical (butterfly).

Hoover easily won the 50 freestyle (22.53) and 100 butterfly (53.75).

King touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (53.66). The Pirates also got victories from Cockrum (200 freestyle in 2:01.06), DeLeon (500 freestyle in 5:50.40) and Adam Miller (100 breaststroke in 1:18.30).

Ashley got a pair of wins from sophomore Cian Post. He captured the 100 backstroke in 58.24 and the 200 IM in 2:02.45.

WRESTLING

Beast of the East

at Croatan

Topsail scored 54 points on day one of the two-day event to sit in fifth place.

Six Pirates advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight class.

After receiving opening round byes, Ian Fritz (pin in 1:31 at 126 pounds), Jake Mackleer (3-0 decision at 132), Ethan Blevins (pin in 0:24 at 138), Will Scholl (pin in 3:36 at 170) and Aaron Martinez (pin in 2:27 at 195) all picked up wins in the quarterfinals.

Thomas Bennett received a second bye at 285 pounds.
