GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 3 Laney 43, No. 7 West Brunswick 35

The Buccaneers opened the game on a 17-0 run before holding on down the stretch to open Mideastern Conference play with a home victory.

Senior Lauren Bastable scored 14 of her career-high 17 points in the opening half. She went 5 of 7 from 3-point range, while adding five rebounds and three assists. 

Laney (6-0, 1-0) also got 12 points, seven assists and four rebounds from Aniece Lewis as well as seven points from Piper Conklin.

The Buccaneers scored on seven of their first nine possessions. The advantage grew to 22 points on a 3-pointer from Bastable just over a minute into the second quarter.

West Brunswick (5-3, 0-1) began chipping away and cut the deficit to 27-14 at halftime. A free throw from freshman Ja’kya Johnson made it a seven-point game with 1:41 to play, but that was as close as the visitors would get. 

Saniya Stanley finished with 10 points and Jahyra Mastry added nine for the Trojans. 

Both teams are back in action Friday at 6 p.m. The Buccaneers play at Ashley, while the Trojans host Hoggard.

No. 2 New Hanover 56, No. 6 Topsail 52

Sophomore Brianna Stanley poured in 19 points to go along with six rebounds, four steals and two assists to help the Wildcats earn a hard-fought road win.

The game was tied at 25-all at halftime before New Hanover (6-0, 1-0 Mideastern) grabbed a 41-37 lead after three quarters.

Iyana Rogers added 12 points, six steals and five assists. Zirhe Sellers narrowly missed out on a double-double by finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. 

The Wildcats also got four points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals from Tamorie Wilson.

Topsail (5-3, 0-1) was paced by Emmy Clark, who finished with 19 points and six steals. Riley Trimble had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. 

New Hanover hosts South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday, while the Pirates welcome North Brunswick on Friday night at 6.

No. 5 Ashley 42, No. 13 South Brunswick 33

A career-high 19 points from Jaeden Hudson was instrumental in guiding the Screaming Eagles to a nine-point victory.

Hudson went 6 of 12 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free throw line. She knocked down three of Ashley’s (6-1, 1-0 Mideastern) four 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. 

The Screaming Eagles, who held a 28-13 halftime advantage, also got 10 points and six rebounds from Anna Benfield as well as five points and 11 rebounds from Bella Cook.

Next up is a home game against Laney at 6 p.m. Friday. South Brunswick (2-4, 0-1) travels to New Hanover on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 1 Hoggard 56, No. 12 North Brunswick 8

It was business as usual for the Vikings, who have won all seven of their games by at least 17 points. 

Three Hoggard (7-0, 1-0 Mideastern) players reached double figures, led by 16 points from Sarah Elgart. The senior also had a team-high 10 rebounds. 

Tristan Shivers added 10 points, nine assists and three steals, while Anna Kate Chance chipped in 10 points and three assists. 

The Vikings shot 53 percent (25 of 47) from the field and had 19 assists. 

Both teams will be on the road Friday night at 6. Hoggard travels to West Brunswick, while North Brunswick (4-3, 0-1) visits Topsail.

No. 16 Coastal Christian 33, Liberty Christian Academy 29

The Centurions exploded for 15 points in the fourth quarter to earn a comeback victory.

Paige Everett, Evie Munroe and Lucy Bos all scored four points over the final eight minutes. Everett led Coastal Christian (2-6) with 10 points, while Munroe finished with nine.

The Centurions, who play at Wayne Country Day on January 3 at 5:30 p.m., trailed 23-18 after three quarters.

No. 11 Cape Fear Academy 59, Harrells Christian Academy 14

Milly Kelley scored eight of her game-high 15 points in the opening quarter to help the Hurricanes build an early lead they would continue to increase.

Macy Stengle finished with seven points. CFA (4-3) also got six points a piece from Mila Middleswarth, Naomi Sharewise and Lulu Wells.

The Hurricanes, who led 24-7 after the opening eight quarters and 46-12 at halftime, host Living Water Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday

No. 8 East Columbus 60, Union 38

A dominant final three quarters kept the Gators unbeaten.

The game was tied at 12 after the first quarter, but East Columbus outscored Union 15-5 in the second quarter.

Three East Columbus (6-0) players reached double figures. Leading the way with Malia Graham with 18 points. Chynna Patrick added 15 points, while Malayah Hines finished with 12. 

Kaley Mitchell drained a pair of 3-pointers en route to her eight points. 

The Gators host Lakewood on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 2 Laney 61, No. 15 West Brunswick 47

A 14-3 run in the third quarter increased the Buccaneers’ lead to 21 points, and they were never seriously threatened down the stretch.

Laney (7-0, 1-0 Mideastern) knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half to build a 23-12 lead. It was 27-17 before the home team went on its big run over a five-minute span.

Hez Driver led a balanced offensive attack with eight points. A total of 12 Buccaneers scored, including seven points a piece from Colin Lamb and Alan Studebaker. 

Laney, which plays at Ashley on Friday at 7:30 p.m., shot 48 percent (22 of 46) from the field and 44 percent (8 of 18) from 3-point range. 

Tristen Roberts scored 11 of his game-high 12 points in the fourth quarter to lead the way for West Brunswick (1-7, 0-1), which hosts Hoggard at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 4 Hoggard 68, No. 3 North Brunswick 60

After falling behind 11-0, the Vikings righted the ship and earned an impressive home victory over the previously unbeaten Scorpions.

Jaylen Herring was one of three Hoggard (4-1, 1-0 Mideastern) players who finished in double figures. He led the way with 20 points. 

Will Seward scored all 12 of his points after halftime, while Jayzion Davis added 10 points. 

The Vikings play at West Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while North Brunswick (7-1, 0-1) travels to Topsail at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 7 Ashley 58, No. 13 South Brunswick 36

The Screaming Eagles shot 47 percent (23 of 49) from the field and controlled the second half to snap a three-game losing streak. 

Junior guard Nate Jarrell finished with a career-high 15 points by going 6 of 9 from the field. Coen Locklear scored 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Quinn Bentley had eight points and five rebounds.

Ashley (2-4, 1-0 Mideastern) led 12-3 after the opening quarter, but the advantage was just 20-18 at halftime. 

Both teams return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Screaming Eagles host Laney, while South Brunswick (2-5, 0-1) plays at New Hanover.

No. 1 New Hanover 72, No. 14 Topsail 30

Thirteen Wildcats reached the scoring column in a lopsided road win.

New Hanover (4-0, 1-0 Mideastern) led 20-2 after the opening eight minutes and 48-8 at halftime.

CJ Kornegay led all scorers with 15 points. Nolan Billings added eight points, while Jakim Beatty finished with seven. Rodmik Allen and Kellum Brown each scored six points. 

Topsail (1-7, 0-1) got 10 points from Spencer Henry. 

The Wildcats host South Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while the Pirates welcome North Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 5 Cape Fear Academy 37, Harrells Christian Academy 36

Freshman Kareem Anderson buried a jump shot with 10 seconds left to give the Hurricanes a thrilling victory.

Anderson and Isaiah Gibson tied for a team-high with nine points. 

CFA (5-1) held a 33-23 lead after three quarters, but didn’t make a field goal in the fourth quarter until Anderson hit the game winner. 

Next up is a home game against Living Water Christian at 7 p.m. Friday

No. 8 Coastal Christian 64, Liberty Christian Academy 42

The Centurions had no trouble improving 8-2 on the season. 

Aidan Davies once again led the way with 12 points, while Holden Martin and George Robertson both scored 11.

Coastal Christian will take on Westchester Country Day on December 20 at 6 p.m.

No. 17 East Columbus 72, Union 32

Cainan Patrick scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter, and the Gators rolled on the road.

East Columbus (2-3) also got nine points a piece from Tyron Keaton and Jaquise Smith.

The Gators host Lakewood on Wednesday night at 7:30.

St. Pauls 54, No. 9 West Columbus 52

The Vikings missed a layup at the buzzer to suffer a heartbreaking loss in their season opener. 

Unique Kelly poured in 18 points, while Tristian Tubbs added 12 for West Columbus (0-1), which made seven 3-pointers.

Next up is a game at Trask in the Waccamaw Conference opener for both teams on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

WRESTLING

New Hanover 42, West Brunswick 29

First-period pins from Genral Sargent (150 pounds), Marqueze Higgins (160) and John Michael Carter (285) helped the Wildcats go on the road and secure a victory.

New Hanover (10-8, 2-1 Mideastern) also got 18 points via pins from Brian Trujillo (113), Kenny Braxton (126) and Elijah Gillespie (175). 

Chris Braxton earned an 8-3 decision at 120, while Jaden Scott won by a score of 7-0 at 165.

West Brunswick (4-2, 1-2) got pins from Tristan Winburn (106), Josue Herrera (132), Joshua Connick (138), Luke Connick (144), Oscar Mendoza (190) and Nick Chirco (215).

The Trojans lost one team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct.

Topsail 57, North Brunswick 24

The Pirates recorded pins in five of the first seven bouts to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

A 9-6 decision at 126 pounds from Tyler Adalin followed by a pin in 4:46 from Robert Tellez at 132 put Topsail (12-5, 3-0 Mideastern) on top 9-0.

The lead grew to 33-6 following pins from Roman Long (4:13 at 144), Colton Allen (3:34 at 150), Ian Fritz (1:32 at 157) and Landen Cook (0:42 at 165). 

The other pins came from Quinton Smith (1:43 at 106), Aaron Martinez (1:20 at 190), Landen Lash (2:35 at 215) and Thomas Bennett (0:29 at 285).

North Brunswick (0-4, 0-3) got on the scoreboard with a 37-second pin from Billy Bracey at 138.

Max Fleckinger (0:32 at 113), Brayden Post (0:56 at 120), and Christian Tobias (1:03 at 175) also recorded pins in the opening period.

Lumberton 46, Topsail 33

The Pirates were unable to hold a 27-12 lead, as Lumberton went on a 34-0 run to seal the win.

Robert Tellez started a string of five consecutive Topsail victories with a pin in 58 seconds at 132 pounds. Charlie Strickland (2:29 at 138), Roman Long (2:30 at 144) and Colton Allen (1:06 at 150) followed with pins of their own.

Defending state champion Ian Fritz earned an impressive 11-4 decision over Matthew Foil at 157. Foil placed fourth at states a season ago.

Quinton Smith had a 43-second pin at 113 for Topsail’s other six points. 

Lumberton 47, North Brunswick 33

A 20-4 tech fall at 150 pounds from Gil Beighle gave the Scorpions a 27-17 lead, but Lumberton recorded pins in five of the final six bouts to rally for a victory.

After falling behind 11-0, North Brunswick got four consecutive wins from Brayden Post (forfeit at 120), Brock Campbell (14-2 major decision at 126), Tyler Sznaider (pin in 5:32 at 132) and Billy Bracy (pin in 1:28 at 138).

The other six points came via a 46-second pin at 215 from Nathan Hastings.
