GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 6 West Brunswick 46, No. 4 Laney 42

Emma Pruitt connected on the game-winning 3-pointer with 2:11 remaining to cap an incredible comeback.

“Coming in last year, my number one goal was to teach the girls how to compete,” second-year West Brunswick coach Kevin Holland said. “Now, we’re learning how to finish off games, and the girls did a great job of that tonight.”

The Trojans (5-1, 1-1 Mideastern) fell behind 8-0 after the opening two minutes. The deficit grew to 13 points when Katelyn Lucera’s layup  gave Laney (5-4, 0-2) a 29-16 lead with 2:20 to play in the second quarter.

A layup on the other end from Brooklyn Coble sparked a 7-0 run that got West Brunswick to within six points at halftime.

The Buccaneers continued to hold a slim a lead for the entirety of the third quarter and half of the fourth quarter. A jumper from Morgan Bellamy gave the Trojans their first lead at 42-40 with 3:56 on the clock.

Piper Conklin evened the score with a layup, but Pruitt connect on her huge shot from the top of the key 20 seconds later to put the visitors on top for good.

Coble added a free throw with 26.1 seconds left for the final point. She scored seven points. Hailey Woodard paced the winners with 12 points, while Bellamy finished with nine.

“I think there are going to be some great games in this conference, and we’re going to have to figure out a way to fight through like we did tonight,” Holland said.

Laney senior Jada Simpson scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the opening half. Conklin had a career-high 15 points.

West Brunswick hosts Ashley at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Buccaneers play at North Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 3 Ashley 44, No. 5 New Hanover 38

A career-high 23 points from freshman guard Brianna Stanley helped the Screaming Eagles hold on at home.

Stanley was 5 of 10 from the field and 11 of 12 from the free throw line. She also came up with three of Ashley’s (5-0, 2-0 Mideastern) 13 steals.

Marlee Cook had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Younger sister, Bella, grabbed nine rebounds. 

Anna Benfield also had a solid game with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

New Hanover (3-2, 1-1) led 33-32 following a layup from Jy’maya Rayford with 5:42 left in the game, but the Screaming Eagles regained the lead for good on a mid-range jumper from Stanley a minute later.

Both teams return to action Friday night at 6. Ashley travels to West Brunswick, while the Wildcats play at South Brunswick.

No. 2 Topsail 62, No. 7 North Brunswick 31

The Pirates exploded for 40 points over the middle two quarters to turn a seven-point lead into a 30-point advantage.

Carolina Coria scored 12 points to go along with eight assists, while Lilah Johnson finished with 11 points and  six steals.

Topsail (7-0, 2-0 Mideastern) also got nine points from Breanna Hebron and seven from Karys Townsend.

Mariah Bell led North Brunswick (2-4, 0-2) with 14 points.

Next up for the Pirates is a game at fellow unbeaten Hoggard on Friday at 6 p.m. The Scorpions return home to take on Laney at 6 p.m. Friday.

No. 1 Hoggard 72, No. 12 South Brunswick 8

The Vikings led 24-0 after the first quarter and 52-3 at halftime.

Kelly Holmgren and Laney Scoggins tied for a game-high with 15 points. Holmgren made three of Hoggard’s (6-0, 2-0 Mideastern) 10 3-pointers. Anya Massey and Anna-Kate Chance each buried a pair.

Scoggins added six assists and five steals. Lexi Steed finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Massey had eight points, five steals and three assists.

The Vikings host Topsail at 6 p.m. Friday. South Brunswick (0-6, 0-2) welcomes New Hanover on Friday night at 6.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 3 Laney 67, No. 7 West Brunswick 63

Another outstanding performance from senior Khalil Genwright lifted the Buccaneers to a hard-fought victory.

Genwright led all scorers with 26 points, including eight in a row late in the second quarter that increased Laney’s (9-0, 2-0 Mideastern) lead to 38-15.

It was the fourth time this season Genwright reached the 25-point mark. 

After missing the previous five games, Josh Helms returned to the lineup and scored 12 points. The Buccaneers also got 13 points and six rebounds from Jarrod Vaughn.

West Brunswick (2-4, 0-2) got hot in the third quarter and connected on five 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 52-45.

A 3-pointer from Kevon Daniels with 33.2 seconds remaining in the game got the Trojans to within one point at 62-61.

Helms was fouled and calmly sank a pair of free throws, but West Brunswick responded with a putback from Quincy Hankins with 11.7 seconds on the clock.

Clinging to a 64-63 lead, Laney freshman Quin’sier Waddell headed to the line for a 1-and-1 with 10.1 seconds to play. He missed the front end, but a lane violation on the Trojans gave him another attempt.

Waddell capitalized on the second chance by sinking the free throw. He missed the second shot, but grabbed the offensive rebound and converted a floater to seal the victory.

“The first half is what I envision us to be moving forward,” Laney first-year coach BJ Donnell said. “In the second half, we came out a little flat and things didn’t go our way, but we got a win and we handled adversity.”

JJ Cobb scored 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half to pace West Brunswick. Carson Pope added 17 points and Daniels finished with 11.

Both teams are back in action Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Buccaneers play at North Brunswick, while the Trojans host Ashley.

No. 11 North Brunswick 40, No. 9 Topsail 37

A fastbreak layup from Eric Mosley late in the third quarter gave the visiting Scorpions a 29-27 lead they would never relinquish.

Mosley was one of nine North Brunswick (3-4, 1-1 Mideastern) players to score. Malakhi Daniels led the way with eight points, while Terry Hood finished with seven. Mosley, Ronnie Ballard and Gavin Lindbert all scored six points.

Topsail (2-4, 1-1) also didn’t have a player reach double figures. Austin Hobson had eight points and Jariel Howard scored seven.

Daniels missed the front end of a 1-and-1 in the final seconds of the game, but he was able to grab the offensive rebound and run the clock out.

Next up for the Scorpions is a home game against Laney at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Pirates travel to Hoggard on Friday night at 7:30.

No. 1 New Hanover 55, No. 6 Ashley 31

Sophomore standout Rodmik Allen scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the first quarter, and the Wildcats used an 18-2 run in the first half to cruise.

New Hanover (5-0, 2-0 Mideastern) also got 13 points from Kellum Brown, who knocked down three 3-pointers in the third quarter. 

Quinn Bentley and Gavin Steiner paced Ashley (2-3, 0-2) with nine points a piece.

The Wildcats travel to South Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Screaming Eagles play at West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 2 Hoggard 67, No. 10 South Brunswick 41

The Vikings opened the second quarter on a 17-0 run to pull away and remain unbeaten.

Jack Voth was one of three Hoggard (5-0, 2-0 Mideastern) players to reach double figures. He led all scorers with 22 points. CJ Kornegay finished with 14 points, while fellow sophomore Jayzion Davis chipped in 12.

South Brunswick (2-4, 0-2) got 11 points from Caleb Bernard and eight from Tony Cox.

Both teams will play at home Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings welcome Topsail, while the Cougars host New Hanover.
