COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BOYS WRESTLING

Hoggard 43, Ashley 21

Lucky Horrell set the tone for the match by earning a second-period pin at 157 pounds to give the host Vikings a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. 

Hoggard (7-6, 2-1 Mideastern) reeled off five consecutive bonus-point victories to increase its advantage to 36-3. 

The 30-0 run included pins from James Wright (56 seconds at 175), Jude Moulton (1:43 at 190), Pierce White (54 seconds at 215) and Corban Barton (3:34 at 106) as well as a forfeit at heavyweight to Asef Ismail.

Kilbey Boone earned a hard-fought 10-8 overtime victory at 132. The junior tied the score with a takedown with 27 seconds left in third period, and then got another takedown midway through overtime.

The Vikings’ other four points came via a 14-1 major decision at 150 from Kyle Buck.

Senior Noah Piper recorded Ashley’s (4-3, 1-2) only pin in the third period at 126. Andrew Botterio (8-4 decision at 165), Mason Winchell (14-5 major decision at 120), Jarrett Quinlan (12-0 major decision at 138) and Chris Heppner (13-3 major decision at 144) were also victorious.

Laney 79, South Brunswick 0

Thirteen of the Buccaneers’ 14 victories included bonus points.

The quickest pin of the night was in 12 seconds from Mason Blue at 285 pounds. Laney (3-0, 3-0 Mideastern) also got first period pins from Jack Williams (1:45 at 106), Sam McQueen (1:00 at 126), Abram Stoebig (1:18 at 138), Tristan Cotto (1:04 at 157), Mac Kopelman (1:12 at 165) and Kaeden Smith (1:47 at 215).

Ayden Arrington (pin in 3:25 at 113), Kingston Neal (16-0 tech fall at 120), Sam Kopelman (pin in 3:20 at 132), Isaiah Wysong (21-6 tech fall at 144), Tyler Buonocore (forfeit at 150), Marquise Kelly (10-6 decision at 175) and Holden Walker (forfeit at 190) secured the other wins.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Laney 54, South Brunswick 6

The Buccaneers remained unbeaten by earning bonus points in all nine of their victories. 

Freshman LaNesha Gause needed only 14 seconds to record a pin at 235 pounds. Laney (8-0) also got a first-period pin in 1:54 from Yesan Huang at 100. 

Katie Simmons (3:33 at 114), Maxton Pridgen (4:40 at 145) and Ay’Seante Ross (3:42 at 165) secured the other pins. 

Jalyssa Fowler (126), Sirian Orellana (132), Genesis Escobar (152) and Britany Munoz (185) received forfeits. 

South Brunswick’s (8-3) lone victory came from Julianna Herold, who had a pin in 1:12 at 120.

There were double forfeits at 107 and 138.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 8 East Columbus 55, Lakewood 22

Senior center Chynna Patrick scored a season-high 17 points in another comfortable victory for the unbeaten Gators. 

Patrick surpassed her previous high of 15 points, which came on Tuesday against Union. 

Malayah Hines finished with 14 points, while Malia Graham added 13.

East Columbus (7-0), which has an average margin of victory of 23.3 points, opens Waccamaw Conference play at home against Pender on Friday at 6 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lakewood 58, No. 17 East Columbus 55 (OT)

The Gators suffered an overtime loss at home despite placing four players in double figures.

Senior Jaden Troy finished with a team-high 14 points, while Cainan Patrick added 13 points and nine rebounds. 

East Columbus (2-4), which led 46-38 after three quarters, also got 12 points from Davonte Marshburn as well as 11 from Jaquise Smith.

Next up is a home game against Pender at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
