Mideastern Conference meet at UNCW

Senior Tabitha Lac claimed four victories, while Morgan Hawthorne, Riley Hubard and Keener Witmer all secured three wins for the Vikings.

Lac was the lone swimmer to touch the wall first in a pair of individual events. She won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.97 and 200 IM in 2:25.27.  

The 200 IM was the closest finish of the meet. Lac was able to hold off teammate Kelsey Weigand, who finished in 2:25.31.

Hawthorne (50 freestyle in 26.47), Hubard (100 breaststroke in 1:17.36) and Witmer (100 freestyle in 57.88) had Hoggard’s other individual victories. 

Lac, Hubard, Witmer and Morgan Hawthorne claimed the 200 medley relay in 1:57.74. Lac, Hawthorne, Hubard and Weigand won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.62.

Weigand and Witmer were joined on the victorious 400 freestyle relay (4:03.27) by Sallie Brown and Lexi Williams.

Laney’s Madi Joy and New Hanover’s Abby Forbes battled in a pair of events, with each winning one. 

Joy captured the 100 butterfly (1:00.06) ahead of Forbes (1:02.06). Forbes got revenge in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:35.24, which was slightly better than Joy’s 5:40.06.

Topsail freshman Camren Grace Reaves started her high school career with a victory in the 200 freestyle (2:10.36).

Ashley 148, West Brunswick 98, South Brunswick 76

Mideastern Conference meet at Brunswick CC (From Thursday)

The Screaming Eagles won all three relays and got two individual victories a piece from sophomores Caroline Furbay and Finley Rountree. 

Furbay, Rountree, Kyla Bartlett and Bailey Swails swam the meet-opening 200 medley relay and finished first in 2:00.83.

Furbay, Swails, Caroline Seay and Jessica Stogner won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.76. 

The 400 freestyle relay team of Roundtree, Stogner, Cadence Eder and Joy Ruth Jacocks had a time of 4:13.25.

Furbay’s individual wins came in the 200 freestyle (2:02.15) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.83), while Rountree won the 200 IM (2:25.89) and 100 butterfly (1:07.58).

Ashley’s other victories came from Swails (50 freestyle in 27.39) and Eder (500 freestyle in 5:46.89).

West Brunswick won the other two events – 100 freestyle by Tess Caron in 1:02.42 and 100 backstroke by Aley Williams in 1:09.48.

Three Vikings – Bradley Bush, Ryan Langtry and Cole Witmer – opened their season with victories in all four events they competed in.

All three were members of the 200 medley (1:41.87) and 200 freestyle (1:32.82) relays. Matthew Caravaglio joined them on the medley team, while Alex Hill swam the third leg on the freestyle relay.

Bush’s individual wins came in the 50 freestyle (22.96) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.64).

Langtry cruised in the 200 freestyle (1:50.90) and 100 butterfly (55.85).

Witmer touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:04.53) and 100 backstroke (54.54).

Hoggard teammates Phillip Brown and Jack Henderson finished in a deadlock in the 100 freestyle (54.79). Both were joined by Hill and Deacon Ball on the victorious 400 freestyle relay, which had a time of 3:41.83.

The only event the Vikings didn’t win was the 500 freestyle, which was captured by Topsail’s Blakely Wilson in 6:26.87.

Ashley 146, South Brunswick 109, West Brunswick 34

Mideastern Conference meet at Brunswick CC (From Thursday)

The Screaming Eagles earned the meet victory by winning eight of 11 events.

Juniors Cian Post and Sean Setzer led the way with four wins, while freshmen Stephen Butner and Ryker Eder each had two victories.

All four comprised the 200 medley relay, which finished in 1:44.64. Post and Setzer were joined by Campbell Carter and Burke Tribble on the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.74).

Post touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (22.28) and 100 butterfly (55.65), while Setzer’s individual wins came in the 200 freestyle (1:48.40) and 100 breaststroke (59.49).

Butner claimed the 100 backstroke in 59.35. Eder’s victory came in the 200 IM (2:12.56).

South Brunswick ended the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle victory. Isaac Gedman, Chance Mason, Cade Needham and Evan Sevast completed the eight laps in 4:13.25.

Needham captured the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.37, while Mason was victorious in the 100 freestyle (52.20).

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Laney 68, No. 7 Pender 40

Senior Khalil Genwright continued his torrid start to the season by scoring a game-high 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Through five games, Genwright is averaging 17.6 points. 

Laney (5-0) also got nine points a piece from Jaylen Herring and Seth Thurston as well as seven from Kayin Scott.

The Buccaneers travel to Jack Britt on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 4 Cape Fear Academy 56, Northwood Temple Academy 40

Isaiah Gibson, Vytas Nausedas and Markus Pastorcic-Straun combined for 44 of the Hurricanes’ 56 points in the comfortable home victory. 

Pastorcic-Straun led CFA (6-2) with 17 points. Nausedas scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half, while Gibson finished with 11.

The Hurricanes were a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line. They will be back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at John Paul II. 

No. 2 Hoggard 63, Jack Britt 33

The Vikings built a 24-10 halftime lead and continued to pull away in the second half of their home opener.

For the second game in a row, senior Jack Voth led the way. The senior finished with a game-high 21 points. 

Eleven Hoggard (2-0) players reached the scoring column. Parker Crittenden had nine points, while Jayzion Davis chipped in eight and Kamar Fulton scored six.

Next up for the Vikings is a home game against Northside-Jacksonville on Tuesday night at 7:30.

No. 5 Trask 91, Clinton 47

Myron McKoy had an outstanding performance with 17 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds in the blowout road victory.

Trask (2-1) scored an impressive 52 points in the first 16 minutes to take a 25-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

Isaac Turner added 14 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Bannerman scored nine of his 13 points from the free throw line.

Jamiel Davis also scored 13 points, while Isaiah Bromelle reached double figures with 12.

The Titans play at Jacksonville on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 4 Laney 68, No. 9 Pender 26

The Buccaneers rolled to their third straight victory behind a game-high 17 points from standout guard Jada Simpson.

Simpson connected on three of Laney’s (4-1) six 3-pointers. Piper Conklin (11 points) and Aniece Lewis (10 points) also reached double figures.

The Buccaneers led 39-15 after three quarters before exploding for 29 points over the final eight minutes. 

Next up is a trip to Jack Britt at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 1 Hoggard 40, Jack Britt 15

Laney Scoggins matched Jack Britt’s entire team with 15 points to keep the Vikings unbeaten.

Scoggins added three assists and three rebounds.

Hoggard (3-0) played incredible defense by holding the Buccaneers scoreless over the middle two quarters and coming away with 17 steals.

Anna-Hollis Pitt had a team-high six steals and six rebounds. Anya Massey scored eight points to go along with three rebounds and three steals.

The Vikings welcome Northside-Jacksonville on Tuesday night at 6.
