WRESTLING

Tiger Holiday Classic

at Chapel Hill

Topsail sophomore Ian Fritz improved to 25-2 on the season with a pair of victories that gave him the title at 132 pounds.

Fritz opened the day with a 9-5 decision over Green Hope’s Jackson Ealy in the semifinals. In the championship match, he earned an 8-2 decision over Tyler Caldwell of Hough.

The Pirates placed sixth in the 37-team field with 145 points despite only competing with eight wrestlers. 

Ethan Blevins (145) and Jack Latta (152) also reached the final before falling.

Blevins held off Chapel Hill’s Porter Brice by a score of 5-4 in the semifinals before losing 21-6 to defending state championship Tyler Tracy of Cardinal Gibbons.

Latta received a forfeit to reach the championship match, where he suffered a 7-5 loss to Thomas Taylor of Jack Britt.

Robert Tellez (120) and Aaron Martinez (182) finished third. Thomas Bennett (285) was fifth and Donovan Gunn (138) placed sixth. 

Sgt. Mark Adams Tournament

at Cary

Five Laney wrestlers claimed titles to lead the team to another tournament championship.

Alex Hopper remained unbeaten on the season by winning at 182 pounds. The N.C. State signee was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestlers.

Laney’s other winners were: Avery Buonocore (145), Noah Thomas (152), Tristan Cotto (160) and Trystan Richardson (195).

Jacob Rosen was the the runner-up at 170, while Tyler Buonocore (132) and Mason Blue (220) both finished third. Ayden Arrington (106) placed fourth, Sam Kopelman (120) was sixth and Robbie Tann (126) finished sixth.

Ashley had four place-winners, led by a second-place finish from Noah Piper at 120. Blake Taylor was third at 152, Ethan Files placed fourth at 170 and Chris Heppner finished fifth at 132.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Sgt. Mark Adams Tournament

at Cary

Three area competitors brought titles back with them to Wilmington. 

Ashley’s Jessica Flowers was the champion at 132 pounds. Laney’s winners were Katie Simmons at 107 and Elaina Pollock at 185.

The Buccaneers also got runner-up finishes from Mia Kiser (120) and Ay’Seante Ross (165) as well as a third-place finish from Jenny Bugbee at 114.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Hoggard 65, East Carteret 21

Third-place game Chris & Kari Collier Holiday Tournament at South Central

The Vikings wasted little time building a comfortable lead they would continue to stretch.

Senior point guard Anya Massey scored 18 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Hoggard (9-1) held a 20-7 advantage after the first quarter that grew to 36-13 at halftime.

Lexi Steed had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Tristan Shivers also reached double figures with 12 points and a team-high seven assists. 

Sarah Elgart had her best game of the season by finishing with nine points and five rebounds.

The Vikings will host Heritage on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on the first day of the Hoggard Holiday Classic.
