BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 9 Southeastern Homeschool 53, No. 13 Pender 44

Finals Wallace-Rose Hill Christmas Tournament

Jayden Johnson led all scorers with 19 points to earn MVP honors and guide the Cardinals to the tournament title.

The senior guard scored eight points in the opening quarter and finished 7 of 10 from the field. 

Southeastern Homeschool (8-4) led 18-11 after the opening eight minutes and 32-29 at halftime. Brantley Springer added 12 points, while Blake Batts chipped in 10. Brock Boehling finished with eight points.

Tim Randolph led Pender (1-3) with 11 points. 

Next up for the Cardinals is a home game against Coastal Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Patriots travel to Dixon on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

No. 12 South Brunswick 43, East Columbus 33

Finals East Columbus Christmas Tournament

A 13-point second quarter gave South Brunswick a commanding 21-9 halftime lead and they finished off the win to claim the tournament title.

South Brunswick (3-5) was led by Ford Disbrow’s 19 points. Tournament MVP Caleb Bernard added 14 points.

The Cougars jump back into Mideastern Conference play on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hoggard.

No. 6 Laney 57, West Columbus 50

Semifinals Bladen Offroad Christmas Tournament at West Bladen

Joe Bachman scored nine of his team-best 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Buccaneers into the title game.

Laney (8-1) also got 10 points from Mike Milholland and nine from Josh Helms. Connor Powe, Chris Rodriguez and Shea Corbett all finished with eight points.

The Buccaneers will take on Pinecrest in the championship contest on Thursday night.

No. 4 Coastal Christian 44, No. 5 North Brunswick 23

The defensive battle went to the Centurions, who got a 21-point performance from sophomore Aidan Davies.

Coastal Christian (9-3) scored 12 points in the second quarter to take a 19-8 lead into the locker room at halftime. David Berne also reached double figures with 10 points, while Luke Davenport finished with eight.

Akell Lance led North Brunswick (6-3) with nine points.

The Centurions play at Southeastern Homeschool at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Scorpions welcome Topsail on Tuesday night at 7:30.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 7 North Brunswick 53, No. 8 Coastal Christian 44

The Scorpions picked up their second victory in as many days thanks to a career-high 20 points from Tamiya Oates.

The senior forward was dominant in the third quarter, where she scored 13 of North Brunswick’s (7-4) 19 points to give the visitors a 40-33 lead.

Laney Scoggins also reached double figures with 16 points, while Jadamis Burnett finished with seven.

Coastal Christian (4-8) led 23-21 at halftime after a 15-point second quarter. Bryna Barton scored a team-best 15 points, while DK Britt added 12. Brooke Allen chipped in eight points.

Next up for the Scorpions is a home game against Topsail at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Centurions are back at home on Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m. against High Point Christian.

WRESTLING

Holy Angels Invitational

At Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte

Laney leads the prestigious 69-team event by 29.5 points after scoring 117 on the opening day.

Seven Buccaneers reached the quarterfinals, while three others are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Mark Samuel (126 pounds), Devon Bell (195) and Corey Pollock (285) all received a double bye before recording a first period pin in their only bout of the day.

Samuel (24-0) pinned his opponent in 1:37, while Bell (25-0) also remained unbeaten with a 29 second pin. Pollock’s (27-3) fall came with three seconds remaining in the first period.

Avery Buonocore (10-3) recorded a pair of pins at 138, while Alex Hopper (29-0) had the same results at 170.

Noah Thomas (28-2) won his first match by pin in 1:44. He advanced to the quarterfinals with an 11-2 major decision.

Owen Harshbarger (27-4) had major decision wins of 12-0 and 16-5 at 160.

The other three wrestlers hoping to reach the podium are: 132 pounder Jayden Harrison (26-4), 182 pounder Charlie Bishop (19-7) and 220 pounder Trystan Richardson (27-6).
