FOOTBALL

Tarboro 22, No. 3 Pender 12

NCHSAA 1A East final

One of the best seasons in Pender history came to an end on the road against the defending state champions.

The Patriots (10-4) were in the East final for only the third time in program history. They suffered a 28-0 loss to James Kenan in 2007 and defeated SW Onslow by a score of 28-17 in 2010.

A 1-yard touchdown run from Kelvin Robinson gave Pender a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Tarboro, which has won three of the past four state titles, scored two straight touchdowns to take a 12-6 lead into halftime.

The Patriots received the second half kickoff and marched 60 yards in six plays to even the score. Junior Christian Hayes found the end zone from 28-yards out with 9:29 left in the third quarter.

The score remained the same deep into the fourth quarter. A rare pass attempt from Tarboro (13-1) inside the red zone was intercepted by Brandon Williams.

Pender started at its own 1-yard line and failed to gain any yards on the first two plays. On third down, quarterback Antonio Bea was tackled in the end zone for a safety to put the Vikings on top with 4:04 to play.

Tarboro recovered the ensuing onside kick and added a touchdown plus a 2-point conversion with 58 seconds remaining.
