BOYS BASKETBALL

Trask 74, Richlands 69

A career-high 32 points from freshman point guard Myran Mckoy lifted the Titans to a win in their first game since Jan. 26.

Trask (5-2, 5-1 Coastal 8) used a 23-point third quarter to build a 58-53 lead and they held on down the stretch. Mckoy also added seven rebounds and four assists. He is currently averaging 17.9 points and 3 assists per game. 

Mckoy went 10 of 20 from the field and drained five of the Titans’ 10 3-pointers, including a pair in the fourth quarter.  

Tyran Pickett added 13 points and seven assists and Isaac Turner chipped in 12. 

Trask plays at Croatan on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Semifinals Coastal Rivers Conference Tournament

Junior shooting guard Luke Davenport buried a 3-pointer from the right wing with 13 seconds left to send the Centurions into the championship game.

It was Coastal Christian’s (10-11) second dramatic victory over the Crusaders in less than a week. Matthew Kelly connected on a 10-footer from the right baseline at the buzzer to give the Centurions a 52-51 win on Friday.

David Berne led the way offensively with 12 points, including seven in the second quarter. Davenport finished with 10 points and Aiden Davies added seven.

Coastal Christian will play at No. 1 Cape Fear Academy on Friday at 7 p.m. in the title game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 2 Coastal Christian 45, No. 3 Harrells Christian Academy 42

Semifinals Coastal Rivers Conference Tournament

Bryna Barton scored a team-high 16 points and the Centurions held on for a hard-fought victory to reach the finals for the third straight year. 

Coastal Christian (7-10) ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to build an 18-15 halftime lead. The advantage grew to 32-19 on a 3-pointer from Barton with 3:52 left in third quarter, but the visitors grabbed the lead midway through the fourth quarter after going on an 11-0 run.

Barton also finished with six steals. AC Fuller had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Darcey Kate Britt chipped in seven points and five assists.

A steal from Britt led to a layup from Fuller that put the Centurions up 39-38 with 1:56 remaining and they never trailed again. Britt connected on a pair of free throws with less than 10 seconds on the clock to seal the win.

Coastal Christian will play at top-seeded Cape Fear Academy in the title game Friday at 5:30 p.m. 

South Brunswick 41, West Brunswick 34

The Cougars rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat their country rival at home and give coach Allison Brown her first victory.

Senior guard Lexi Collins had a huge game with 10 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, five assists and three blocks. South Brunswick (1-5, 1-3 Mideastern) also got 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks from Nija Bryant and nine points from Jaidyn Akers-Bryant.

West Brunswick (1-6, 1-4) jumped out to an 11-3 lead after the opening quarter and entered the locker room at halftime leading 25-14.

Akers-Bryant evened the score at 27-all with 6:42 left in the game, but the Trojans responded with a mini 5-0 run to regain the lead.

Jo Mann connected on a jumper and then buried two free throws to cut the deficit to one and a layup from Kassidy Lewis gave the Cougars a 33-32 lead with 3:26 on the clock.

Collins put South Brunswick on top for good with a 3-pointer from the right corner and a layup from Bryant sealed the win.

West Brunswick got seven points a piece from Daliyah Stanley and Jamelia-Naraja Hill.

Both teams are back in action Friday at 5 p.m. The Cougars play at Topsail and the Trojans travel to North Brunswick.

BOYS DIVING

NCHSAA 3A State Championship

At Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh

New Hanover’s Nathan Nichols earned a ninth-place finish by scoring 210.15 points on his 11 dives.

It was the second straight top-10 finish for Nichols, who was fifth as a sophomore. 

BOYS SOCCER

Trask 0, SW Onslow 0

Senior goalkeeper Eduardo Gomez finished with 10 saves, but the Titans weren’t able to find the back of the net in the scoreless draw.

Trask (2-2-1) is back in action Friday at Clinton at 5 p.m.
