GIRLS SWIMMING

NCHSAA 4A State Championship

At Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary

Junior Callie Parkes of Hoggard had an outstanding meet by earning a pair of top-three finishes.

She was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle after finishing with a season-best time of 23.20. Later in the event, Parkes swam a season-best 50.95 to finish third in the 100 freestyle.

Teammate Emma Johnson was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.66. The Vikings placed 12th as a team with 15 points, while Laney was 15th with eight points.

Junior Jenna Grill scored all the Buccaneers’ points. She was third in the 50 freestyle in 23.22 and seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.28. Both were season bests.

Parkes, Johnson, Tabitha Lac and Sarah Pierson teamed up for an 11th-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:51.46). 

The only other area participant was Ashley senior Alana Reichow, who was 11th in the 100 breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:07.86.

NCHSAA 4A State Championship

At Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary

Ashley’s Logan Butner, Patrick Furbay, Cian Post and Sean Setzer earned a pair of top-10 relay finishes and the Screaming Eagles were 15th as a team with 14 points.

They finished sixth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1.28.45 and seventh in the 200 medley in 1:36.16.

Butner had the team’s highest individual finish. He touched the wall in a season-best 57.08 to place fifth in the 100 breaststroke, which was his final high school event.

Furbay finished 10th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.37 and Post was 12th in the 100 freestyle in 49.88.

Hoggard was 16th in the team standings with 12 points. They got seven points from diver Jason Bunn on Friday and five more from Will Parker on Saturday.

Parker finished fifth in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.38 and eighth in the 100 freestyle in 47.30.

Parker was joined by Matthew Luo, Bradley Bush and Will Sterrett on the 200 freestyle relay, which placed 11th with a time of 1:29.83.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Topsail 46, Ashley 39

The Pirates returned to the court for the first time since January 29 and secured a road victory behind 14 points from Canon Keziah.

The junior knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and went 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. 

Topsail (3-4, 1-2 Mideastern) also got nine points from Carlos Vazquez, seven from Will Pressler and six from Connor Wilson. They got off to a fast start and led 16-7 after the first quarter.

Ashley (3-6, 1-3) was led by Mikhail Pocknett, who scored 12 points. Blake Lewis chipped in 10 points. The Screaming Eagles struggled from the free throw line by going 4 of 16.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Pirates host Hoggard and Ashley plays at South Brunswick.
