BOYS SWIMMING

NCISAA Division II State Championship

at Greensboro Aquatic Center

Senior Axel Fraud claimed a state title in the 100 backstroke to help the Hurricanes record their best finish in program history.

Fraud crushed his previous season-best time of 55.75 by touching the wall in 51.68 to earn a close victory over Asheville School’s Patrick Sleater (51.94).

Earlier in the meet, Fraud was third in the 100 butterfly with another season best of 53.60.

He swam the anchor leg on the second-place 400 freestyle relay (3:26.28), which also included Lane Durham, Ray McDonald and Ted Jones.

Durham, Jones, Fraud and Dakota Snyder placed third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.58.

CFA scored 215 points to finish third behind Asheville School (427) and Forsyth Country Day (388.5).

Jones and Durham both earned a pair of to-10 individual finishes. Jones placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (51.66) and seventh in the 200 distance (1:55.94). Durham was fifth in the 200 IM (1:59.20) and seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:09.78).

The 200 medley relay team of McDonald (backstroke), Will Johnson (breaststroke), Snyder (butterfly) and Collin Hinson (freestyle) scored 24 points by finishing seventh in 1:56.94.

McDonald was eight in the 200 IM (2:28.47) and 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:06.04). Snyder placed eight in the 100 freestyle (55.43) and 12th in the 50 freestyle (25.00).

Hinson touched the wall 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:14.37.

Avery Bishop, Sara Paige Harvey, Katie Meine, Leah Murtagh and Elliott Wells all had four top-10 finishes to help the Hurricanes place third as a team with 242 points.

Forsyth Country Day ran away with the title by scoring 380 points. They were followed by Asheville School with 280. 

Murtagh came the closest to winning a title. She was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.13. Murtagh was also seventh in the 100 freestyle (59.44)

Bishop had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:09.35) and 100 butterfly (1:06.40), while Meine placed sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:16.12) and eighth in the 500 distance (6:09.94).

Wells touched the wall sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:08.18) and ninth in the 50 freestyle (27.49). Harvey finished eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.88) and ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:10.72).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Murtagh, Harvey, Wells and Bishop was third with a time of 1:49.40.

Bishop, Wells, Meine and Murtagh completed the 400 freestyle relay in 4:00.17 and also earned a third-place finish.

Harvey (backstroke), Liza Wells (breaststroke), Meine (butterfly) and Sydney Cortina (freestyle) were seventh in the 200 medley relay (2:11.24).

CFA’s other top-15 individual finishes came from Liza Wells (sixth in 100 breaststroke in 1:24.56), Saunders Harvey (eighth in 100 breaststroke in 1:25.02) and Cortina (15th in 50 freestyle in 28.44 and 15th in 100 freestyle in 1:04.57).

No. 3 Southeastern Homeschool 74, No. 6 Faith Homeschool 38

First round NCHEAC East Regional

A 22-point first quarter gave the Cardinals a comfortable lead and they continued to cruise to reach the semifinals.

Freshman Blake Batts scored a team-high 19 points by going 7 of 11 from the field. He knocked down three 3-pointers.

Jayden Johnson added 17 points, while Brice Griffin finished with 12 for Southeastern Homeschool (15-7).

The Cardinals, who led 22-5 after eight minutes, will take on No. 2 North Wake Homeschool on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Wake Tech. The teams split a pair of regular season meetings. 

Wilmington Christian Academy 55, Gramercy Christian 53

Trey Pierce made four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points as the Patriots picked up a hard-fought road win.

Pierce had eight points in the first quarter to give WCA (10-15) a 15-9 lead. Thomas Sousa scored 13 of his 17 points in the opening half.

The Patriots also got seven points from Tiruneh Giammarino. WCA would have put the game away earlier with a better performance from the free throw line, but it finished 7 of 20.

They will receive a bye in the opening round of the NCCSA 2A playoffs before getting the postseason started Thursday against an opponent to be announced.
