BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 11 South Brunswick 31, No. 14 Topsail 29

Ford Disbrow drained the game-winning 17-foot jumper from the right baseline with seven seconds left to give the Cougars a low-scoring road victory.

It was the second game-winning shot of the season for the senior guard, who led all scorers with 14 points.

South Brunswick (8-10, 4-7 Mideastern) led 21-17 after three quarters, but Topsail (3-17, 1-10) went on a 10-2 run to grab a four-point lead following a basket from Nathan Lau with 3:03 remaining.

The Cougars immediately responded with a layup from Disbrow. Tony Cox made a pair of free throws to tie the score at 29-all with 1:02 to play.

Disbrow blocked a shot on the ensuing possession to set up his game winner. 

Demerius Wise added seven points for South Brunswick, which hosts Laney at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Pirates were led by freshman Spencer Henry’s seven points. They travel to New Hanover on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 65, No. 10 West Brunswick 47

The Vikings led from start-to-finish after building a quick 7-0 lead. 

Eleven Hoggard (18-3, 10-1) players reached the scoring column, led by 16 points from Shane Hawkins. Hoku Fisher added nine points, while Korbin Pettigrew and Sam Jones both chipped in eight. 

A 16-4 run in the third quarter extended the lead to 46-28.

West Brunswick’s (9-11, 5-6 Mideastern) Quincy Hankins scored 12 points. JJ Cobb added eight.

Both teams return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings host Ashley, while the Trojans play at North Brunswick.

No. 8 Laney 46, No. 9 Ashley 36

Sophomore Josh Helms buried three 3-pointers and led all scorers with 13 points to help the Buccaneers snap a four-game losing streak.

Laney (14-6, 5-6 Mideastern) also got eight points a piece from Michael Milholland and Connor Powe. 

Powe put the home team on top for good with back-to-back baskets late in the second quarter.

Coen Locklear and Blake Lewis both finished with seven points for Ashley (7-12, 4-7).

The Buccaneers play at South Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Screaming Eagles visit Hoggard on Friday night at 7:30.

No. 1 New Hanover 74, No. 7 North Brunswick 40

James Jones Jr. finished with a season-high 21 points in another double-digit victory.

New Hanover (17-0, 11-0 Mideastern) scored 22 straight points in the second half to put the game out of reach. 

Mikhail Pocknett recorded a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Khalil Genwright added nine points and five rebounds, while Rodmik Allen handed out eight assists.

The Wildcats host Topsail on Friday at 7:30 p.m. North Brunswick (9-9, 4-7) is back at home against West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 3 Cape Fear Academy 70, Harrells Christian Academy 22

The Hurricanes exploded for 48 points in the first half to build a 33-point lead. 

Three CFA (15-3, 5-0 Coastal Rivers) players reached double figures and nine scored.

Caden Bariglio and Imran Armstrong tied for a game-high with 12 points. Saransh Padhy chipped in 10 points. The Hurricanes also got nine points a piece from Markus Pastorcic-Straun and Chatham Lambiotte. 

The teams square off again Friday night at 7 p.m. at CFA.

No. 5  Trask 72, East Columbus 38

For the second night in a row, the Titans had no trouble taking down the Gators.

Myron Mckoy led Trask (13-8, 5-2 Waccamaw) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Tyran Pickett added 14 points and five rebounds, while Jamiel Davis also reached double figures with 10 points. 

The Titans led 39-23 at halftime before extending it to 56-31 after three quarters.

Trask visits South Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Hoggard 54, No. 5 West Brunswick 19

The Vikings came away with 16 steals in a dominant road win that kept them unbeaten in the Mideastern Conference.

Anya Massey finished with a game-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Hoggard (18-3, 11-0 Mideastern) led 17-7 after the first quarter and 31-10 at halftime. 

Jadah Armour also reached double figures with 11 points, while Anna-Hollis Pitt finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

The Vikings, who host Ashley at 6 p.m. Friday, connected on seven 3-pointers. 

West Brunswick (10-7, 4-6) travels to North Brunswick on Friday night at 6.

No. 4 Laney 60, No. 6 Ashley 25

Jada Simpson and Kate Maginnes combined for 31 points, and the Buccaneers had no trouble picking up their second win in as many days.

Simpson’s game-high 18 points came on six 3-pointers. Maginnes drained three 3-pointers en route to 13 points. 

Laney (14-5, 8-3 Mideastern), which led 25-7 after the opening eight minutes, also got nine points from Aniece Lewis and six from Taylor Chism.

Marlee Cook led Ashley (9-10, 2-9 Mideastern) with five points, while Savannah Cook grabbed nine rebounds.

The Buccaneers travel to South Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles travel to Hoggard at 6 p.m. Friday.

No. 2 Topsail 60, No. 8 South Brunswick 41

After a sluggish first quarter in which they only scored six points, the Pirates scored 20 in each of the next two quarters to build an insurmountable lead.

Lilah Johnson and Lexie Dawson both made three 3-pointers and tied for a game-high with 13 points. 

Topsail (14-3, 7-2 Mideastern) also got nine points a piece from Bre Hebron and Rhianna Garmendiz. Brianna Jones finished with six points.

Brooke Moore scored 10 points to pace South Brunswick (3-13, 1-10). 

Both teams play again Friday at 6 p.m. The Pirates travel to New Hanover, while the Cougars welcome Laney.

No. 11 Trask 58, East Columbus 42

A remarkable 38-point performance from senior Madalyn White gave the Titans their second win over the Gators in as many days.

White had 11 points in the first quarter and 14 in the third quarter. She made three 3-pointers and went 9 of 11 from the free throw line.

Trask (7-9, 5-1 Waccamaw) trailed 24-21 at halftime before building a 41-38 lead after three quarters. They outscored East Columbus 17-4 over the final eight minutes.

Next up is a road game at South Columbus on Friday at 6 p.m.
