No. 1 Laney 71, No. 16 Broughton 54

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

KyVious Berry and Joe Bachman combined for 37 points and the Buccaneers advanced to the second round for the second straight year.

Berry continued his stellar play by leading the way with 19 points, including 11 in the opening half. He scored 24 points in Saturday’s win at Hoggard in the Mideastern Conference 4A tiebreaker.

Laney (10-1) led 20-14 after the opening quarter and 31-24 at halftime.

Bachman scored nine of his 18 points in the third quarter to increase the lead to 51-34. The advantage grew to 63-36 following a layup from Mike Milholland with 4:01 remaining.

The Buccaneers will host No. 8 Lumberton on Thursday at a time to be announced. The Pirates earned a 59-53 victory over No. 9 Leesville Road.

No. 15 Northeastern 79, No. 2 Trask 58

First round NCHSAA 2A playoffs

Robert Pridgen scored a team-high 17 points and Tyran Pickett added nine points and eight rebounds, but the Titans saw their season come to a close with a home loss.

Trask (8-4) trailed 17-13 after the first quarter and 39-30 at halftime. 

The Titans only graduate one senior, Will Berry, so they should be primed to make another run next season.

No. 6 Apex Friendship 61, No. 11 Hoggard 30

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Vikings stayed close for the first seven minutes of the game, but Apex Friendship ended the first half on a 36-3 run to force a running clock in the second half.

Hoggard (8-4) only scored three points in the second quarter and entered the locker room at halftime trailing 54-13. 

Hoku Fisher finished with a team-high 10 points, while Kris Gibbs chipped in eight.

No. 3 Gaston Christian School 85, No. 3 Cape Fear Academy 55

Semifinals NCISAA 3A playoffs

The Hurricanes came up one victory shy of playing in the state title game for the third straight season.

After falling behind 32-15 midway through the second quarter, CFA (15-5) was able to close the gap to 39-31 with four minutes to play in the third quarter.

The deficit was nine entering the fourth quarter before Gaston Christian School exploded for 34 points over the final eight minutes.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 1 Ashley 78, No. 16 Knightdale 69

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Saniya Rivers had a double-double with 47 points and 13 rebounds and the Screaming Eagles finished with 50 second half points to survive a scare.

Rivers went 18 of 34 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free throw line. She also added five assists and three steals.

Ashley (13-1) trailed 37-28 at halftime before catching fire in the second half. They shot 52 percent (29 of 56) from the field for the game and went 18 of 24 from the free throw line.

Lexi Hinson had a terrific performance with 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds to go along with eight steals and three assists.

Next up for the Screaming Eagles is a home game against No. 8 Pinecrest on Thursday at a time to be announced. The Patriots downed South View by a score of 54-43.

No. 3 Heritage 38, No. 14 Hoggard 30

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Senior Icess Tresvik led the way with 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, but the Vikings’ offense was stymied in the second half.

The teams went to their respective locker rooms with the Huskies up 24-23 following a buzzer-beater. Hoggard (11-2) struggled to put the ball in the basket in the second half and finished with only seven points over the final 16 minutes. 

The Vikings got seven points and 11 rebounds from sophomore Anna-Hollis Pitt , while Lacy Lovitt chipped in six points.

No. 2 Pine Forest 61, No. 15 Laney 54

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Buccaneers let a seven-point halftime lead slip away in a season-ending road loss.

Junior Taylor Chism scored a team-high 20 points and Regan Stewart drained five 3-pointers en route to 17 points. Brooke Sommer added 16 points, but Laney (8-5) only got one point from the rest of the team.

The Buccaneers held a 15-10 lead after the opening eight minutes and increased it to 31-24 at halftime.

BOYS SOCCER

Ashley 3, Hoggard 2

Keegan Peat converted a penalty kick less than a minute into overtime to help the Screaming Eagles split the season series.

Hoggard (5-2) held a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to a pair of goals from Luke Carlin in the third and 34th minutes.

Peat cut the deficit in half with his first goal in the 60th minute and Ashley (6-3) sent the game into overtime on a Bayron Arzu goal with one second on the clock.

The Screaming Eagles visit Topsail at 6 p.m. Monday, while the Vikings host West Brunswick on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hoggard 12, Ashley 8

The Vikings remained unbeaten by completing the season sweep.

Aiden Flynn scored four goals and dished out a pair of assists, while Eric Wagner finished with four goals and one assist. Eli Meyer found the back of the net twice and had an assist.

Hoggard (5-0) also got one goal a piece from Zack Coyle and Charles Wilt. Goalkeeper Daniel Ando stopped 15 shots.

Ashley (4-3) got three goals from Bryce Alkins as well as two goals and one assist a piece from Brodie Deutsch and Parker Harris. Jack Marshall finished with one goal and one assist, while Kenan Everhart dished out a pair of assists.

The Vikings visit West Brunswick on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. The Screaming Eagles welcome Topsail at 5 p.m. Monday.

Laney 11, Topsail 6

The Buccaneers avenged an early-season loss thanks to 12 saves from senior goalkeeper Matt Lord.

Luke Gordon led the offense with three goals, while Nic and Sam Lord each finished with two goals and two assists.

Laney (5-2) also got a goal a piece from Gage Thompson, Mason Vaughan, Carson Adkins and Fields Woodard. 

The Buccaneers play at Hoggard on Monday at 6:45. Topsail (3-2) hosts South Brunswick on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Ashley 10, Hoggard 4

Sophomore Bailey Swails scored a game-high five goals and the Screaming Eagles completed the season sweep over their rival.

Goalkeeper Ellen McCarty had an outstanding performance with 15 saves. Ashley (5-1) also got four goals, one assist, three draw controls and seven ground balls from Alexa Burghardt. Freshman Leah Bode put home the other goal for the Screaming Eagles, who led 6-2 at halftime. 

Hoggard (2-5, 2-4 Mideastern) was led by Deja Tucci, who scored twice. Kajsa Andersson and Anneleise Meyer each found the back of the net once, while Emily Cox scooped up four ground balls. Goalkeeper Rylie Karren finished with six saves.

Ashley hosts Topsail on Monday at 6:45 p.m., while the Vikings play at West Brunswick at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
