West Brunswick 26, Ashley 0

The Trojans’ stout defense earned a shutout and the offense had several explosive plays in the season-opening road victory.

Senior quarterback Monzelle Campbell scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown on a 60-yard run midway through the opening quarter.

West Brunswick’s (1-0) advantage increased to 13-0 on a 24-yard pass from Patrick Vereen to Avery Clemmons with 4:10 left in the second quarter.

Campbell broke off another big run in the fourth quarter, cutting back across the field for a 74-yard score with 5:43 remaining and Johnnie Magbie put the finishing touches on the victory with a 2-yard run.

“The one thing that’s different about this year is we’re really able to create some explosive plays offensively,” West Brunswick coach Brett Hickman said. “Patrick can really push the ball down the field and Monzelle broke a couple big runs. I think we had six plays over 20 yards tonight and that’s something we’ve really missed the last couple years from everybody except Trey Bell.”

Junior middle linebacker Carter Wyatt was sensational, finishing with a team-high 13 tackles.

Topsail 20, Laney 6

Wake Forest signee Gavin Ellis was terrific in his first game at quarterback. He ran for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Pirates to a road win.

Ellis, who played wide receiver a season ago, completed a pass on 4th-and-3 early in the second quarter and then scored from two yards out to put Topsail (1-0) in front with 9:59 remaining until halftime.

Later in the quarter, he connected with running back Bernie Burns for a 42-yard touchdown pass. The advantage grew to 20-0 on Ellis’ second short touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

“Once Gavin settles in back there and the game starts to slow down for him, he’s going to be tough,” Topsail coach Wayne Inman said. “He is a very talented kid and he does some special things out there.”

Noah Schiefelbein also came up with a terrific interception in the end zone.

Eli Rivera scored Laney’s (0-1) lone touchdown on a 17-yard run.
