COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BASEBALL

No. 1 Hoggard 10, Jacksonville 0 (5 innings)

Senior pitchers Coleton Norris and Tyler Jumper combined on a 1-hitter with nine strikeouts, and the Vikings exploded for eight runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Norris got the start and finished with nine strikeouts in four innings. Jumper struck out all three batters he faced in the fifth.

The game ended by mercy rule when sophomore Preston Smith scored the 10th run on a one-out single to left field from Cyrus Thompson.

Smith, Hunter Lohrli and Luke Vargo all crossed the plate twice. Josiah Gillespie drove in a pair of runs with a base hit to complete Hoggard’s (2-0) eight-run third inning.

The Vikings will travel to Swansboro at 7 p.m. Friday.

No. 10 South Columbus 2, West Bladen 0

The Stallions scored both runs with two outs in the top of the first inning and held on to earn a season-opening victory. 

Junior Rowen Simpson scattered one hit and struck out six batters over six innings to pick up with win. Daquan Cox recorded the final three outs for the save.

Cox led off the game with a single to center field and eventually scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

South Columbus (1-0) hosts Laney on Tuesday night at 7.

SOFTBALL

No. 14 West Columbus 22, No. 16 New Hanover 4 (3 innings)

Freshman shortstop Kaleigh Blackwell drilled a home run to center field in an 11-run second inning that lifted the Vikings to their second win of the week.

Blackwell finished 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Layla King went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and four runs scored. 

West Columbus (2-0) also got two hits a piece from Farrah Meares and Isabella Rogers. Meares drove in three runs and crossed the plate twice, while Rogers scored three runs and finished with two RBI.

Next up for the Vikings is a home game against Red Springs at 6 p.m. Friday. New Hanover (0-1), which was playing its first game since 2021, is off until March 11 when it travels to West Columbus at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Laney 7, Gray’s Creek 1

Chowan signee Mackenzi Curry recorded 18 strikeouts to give the Buccaneers a second consecutive victory on the road. 

Curry also had a great night at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double. Bailey Bettencourt, Layla Carr and Isabella Stevens all finished 2-for-4.

Carr had a team-high three RBI, while Bettencourt drove in two runs. Stevens crossed the plate twice.  

Laney (2-0) scored two runs in each of the first three innings to grab the lead for good.

Next up is a home game against Roxboro Community at 2 p.m. Saturday.

No. 1 Topsail 13, Swansboro 2 (5 innings)

The Pirates collected 15 hits and scored in each of their four trips to the plate to cruise at home.

Left fielder Addie Macdougall went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI and two runs scored. Fellow senior Rylee Reuter also collected hits in all three at-bats to go along with two RBI and one run scored.

After allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, Topsail (2-0) grabbed the lead for good by scoring six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Kinley Jordan drove in three runs, while Emmy Clark had two RBI and two runs scored.

The victory went to Kennedy Sloan, who recorded 12 strikeouts and scattered just two hits in five innings.

A home game against West Carteret at 6 p.m. Tuesday awaits the Pirates.

No. 3 South Brunswick 3, Dixon 0

For the second time this week, junior standout Kina Davis belted a home run and picked up the victory with a dominant performance in the circle.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Kendra Goodwin led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice fly from Savana Burgess.

Tabatha Martin followed with a base hit that allowed Goodwin to cross the plate with the game-winning run. Davis then belted a two-run home run to left field to increase South Brunswick’s (2-0) lead to 3-0.

Davis also had a two-out single in the fourth inning. The Charlotte commit threw a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Of the 87 pitches she threw, a remarkable 71 went for strikes.

The Cougars host South Columbus on Monday night at 6.

No. 6 South Columbus 11, No. 7 North Brunswick 6

The top three batters in the Stallions’ lineup – Carmen Buck, Reah Lee and Brileigh Ward – combined to go 10-for19 with six RBI and five runs scored in the road win.

South Columbus (1-0) scored three runs in the second inning and tacked on four more in the third to build a 7-0 lead. It grew to 10-0 following a three-run fifth inning.

Freshman Adrianna Gomez and junior Shanley Hunt both collected a pair of hits to lead North Brunswick (1-1) offensively. 

The Stallions visit South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Monday. The Scorpions travel to South Columbus on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 7 South Brunswick 8, South Columbus 0

Cassidy Oldham opened her senior season with a five-goal performance.

South Brunswick’s (1-0) other three goals were scored by freshman Meryn Deutsch. Goalkeeper Madelynne Gedman preserved the shutout by stopping all three shots she faced.

The teams will play again, this time at South Brunswick, at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

No. 9 New Hanover 2, East Bladen 2

The Wildcats got goals from Ara Edge and Finley Nicholson to open the season with a draw.

Eva Romanowki assisted on the first goal. 

New Hanover (0-0-1) will return to action at home Thursday night at 5 against Coastal Christian.

BOYS TENNIS

Ashley 9, Laney 0

Straight-set victories in five of the six singles matches helped the Screaming Eagles roll in their season opener.

Hayden Kresge didn’t drop a game at No. 6. Ethan Zuege (6-2, 6-1 at No. 1), Eli Clamme (6-1, 6-0 at No. 2), Aidan Tingley (6-1, 6-2 at No. 3) and Charlie Streb (6-1, 6-1 at No. 5) also cruised.

In his first high school match, freshman Nate Bourk held on for a 6-2, 6-7(2), 10-2 win at No. 4. 

Ashley (1-0, 1-0 Mideastern) also swept doubles – Zuege/Clamme (8-4 at No. 1), Tingley/Streb (8-3 at No. 2) and Bourk/Deven Smith (8-1 at No. 3). 

Both teams have home matches Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Screaming Eagles welcome South Brunswick, while Laney (0-1, 0-1) hosts North Brunswick.

New Hanover 8, South Brunswick 1

Augie Ballantine (No. 1), Bryce Morrison (No. 2) and Owen Alford (No. 3) all cruised to 8-0 singles victories for the Wildcats. 

Colin Carter dropped just one game at No. 5, while Allstair Dameron had a score of 8-2 at No. 6. 

New Hanover’s (2-0, 2-0 Mideastern) doubles victories came from the teams of Cutter Morgan/Reilly Benton (8-1 at No. 1), Kiah Allen/Zeke Crawford (8-1 at No. 2) and Alex Carter/Ben Flynt (8-0 at No. 3).

Next up for the Wildcats is a road match against West Brunswick at 4 p.m. Thursday. South Brunswick (0-1, 0-1) travels to Ashley on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Hoggard won six events on the track to claim the team victory in the season-opening meet. 

Topsail’s Carlos Valencia was the only athlete with multiple event wins. He crossed the finish line first in the 110-meter hurdles (17.13) and had a distance of 38-0 in the triple jump.

Mideastern Conference meet at Ashley

Hoggard swept the mid-distance and distance track events to roll to a 60-points victory. 

Despite finishing third, North Brunswick had the only two multi-event winners. Macie Inman was first in the 100-meter dash (12.77) and 200 (27.22). Standout thrower Jasmine Colwell had no trouble capturing the discus (84-2) and shot put (33-6).
