The Pirates picked up their second straight home victory to improve to 2-1 on the young season.

Tanner Kelly finished with a goal and two assists. Evan Perry, Caleb Bartleson and Will Bigham had the other goals, while Hayden Howell and Tyler Kroma each dished out an assist. 

Topsail took a 1-0 lead into halftime before tacking on three more goals over the final 40 minutes. Goalkeeper Drew Benenhaley stopped all four shots he faced to earn the clean sheet.

Next up for the Pirates is a road match against Ashley on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. South Brunswick (0-2-1) hosts New Hanover on Thursday at 4 p.m.

SW Onslow 3, Pender 1

Freshman Hunter Bullard scored his first career goal, but it wasn’t enough to lead the Patriots to a win.

Goalkeeper Brayden Oathout finished with five saves for Pender (1-3), which plays at Dixon on Monday night at 6.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pender 68, Richlands 41

Josef Fullwood led all scorers with 22 points and the Patriots cruised past the winless Wildcats.

Nine players reached the scoring column for Pender (4-3), which built an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 33-19 at halftime. Jaxon Teachey finished with 10 points and Timothy Randolph chipped in nine.

The Patriots, who play at Coastal Christian on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., also got eight points from Dominic Campbell. 

North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 52, Cape Fear Academy 43

Gavin Guion continued his stellar play by finishing with a game-high 23 points in a home loss.

The senior point guard scored 16 of CFA’s (10-4) 23 second half points. He knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and went 7 of 7 from the free throw line.

The Hurricanes struggled offensively in the second quarter, finishing with just one field goal and entered the locked room at halftime trailing 25-20.

Imran Armstrong chipped in eight points. CFA is back in action Friday at home against Fayetteville Academy at 7 p.m.
