Ashley junior Sean Setzer shattered his own New Hanover County record in the 50 freestyle by touching the wall first in 20.37 seconds.

Setzer set his previous best time of 20.94 at last weekend’s Mideastern Conference Championship.

The 20.37 time would have won all but two NCHSAA 4A state titles dating back to 1986.

Setzer, who recently committed to UNC, was also the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.95.

Three other New Hanover County records were broken at the meet.

Ashley’s Cian Post set a new best time in the 100 freestyle (46.80), breaking the mark previously set by Will Parker (47.04) in 2021. Post was the runner-up in the event.

Hoggard’s 200 freestyle relay team of Matthew Caravaglio, Ryan Langtry, Bradley Bush and Cole Witmer placed second in 1:27.07. That broke a time of 1:28.45 set by Ashley in 2021.

Witmer anchored the 400 freestyle relay team that was third with a new county-best time of 3:10.81. He was joined by Jackson Hughes, Nathan Arredondo and Evan Stuck.

The Vikings placed fifth as a team with 199 points.

The top six finishers in each event from all three regionals automatically qualified for next week’s state championship. The next six fastest times will also qualify.

Witmer qualified for states in the 50 freestyle (sixth in 21.68) and 100 backstroke (third in 50.44).

In addition to the 100 freestyle, Post will also compete in the 50 freestyle next week at states. He placed fourth in a time of 21.44.

Hoggard had three other competitors earn at-large berths to the state championship – Arredondo (100 freestyle), Stuck (100 backstroke) and Bryce Nifoussi (diving).

The Vikings scored 203 points to finish in fourth place.

The top six finishers in each event from all three regionals automatically qualified for next week’s state championship. The next six fastest times will also qualify.
