GIRLS SWIMMING

NCISAA Division II  State Championship

At Greensboro Aquatic Center

Boston College signee Liza Murtagh capped her illustrious high school career with four state titles to help lead Cape Fear Academy to a runner-up team finish.

The Hurricanes finished with 302 points and only trailed Forsyth Country Day, which scored 368 points. It’s the highest finish for CFA in program history.

Murtagh captured the 200 IM by eight seconds after touching the wall in 2:07.76. She later won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.73.

Murtagh, Avery Bishop, Taylor Crane and Leah Murtagh joined forces to earn victories in the 200 (1:43.45) and 400 (3:45.23) freestyle relays.

Bishop was second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.97) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:04.16), while Leah Murtagh placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:05.07) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (57.66).

Crane finished third in the 50 freestyle (25.94) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (57.68) despite only being a seventh grader.

Sara Paige Harvey, Margaret Wells, Elliot Wells and Katie Meine earned a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay (2:10.47)

NCISAA Division II State Championship

At Greensboro Aquatic Center

Cape Fear Academy scored 132 points to earn an eighth-place finish in the 13-team field.

Andrew Basinger finished fifth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.69 and seventh in the 500 freestyle in 5:22.71. 

Henry Steven was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.99) and 10th in the 50 freestyle (25.29).

Basinger, Jason Huang, Collin Hinson and Ray McDonald earned a sixth-place finish in the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay (3:57.81).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Laney 52, Topsail 34

Junior Taylor Chism scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the second half and the Buccaneers overcame a slow start to secure the victory.

Topsail led 15-8 after the opening eight minutes, but Laney (8-2, 4-0 Mideastern) found its groove in the second quarter to take a 23-22 lead into halftime.

The Buccaneers pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Pirates (3-8, 0-4) 19-5. They went 8 of 12 from the free throw line in the quarter.

Regan Stewart scored seven of her 11 points over the final eight minutes and Brooke Sommer added eight points.

Carolina Coria led Topsail with 12 points, while Bella Kross chipped in nine.

The Buccaneers play at Hoggard on Friday at 5 p.m. The Pirates host South Brunswick on Friday at 5 p.m.

Ashley 79, North Brunswick 41

South Carolina signee Saniya Rivers poured in 14 points in the opening quarter and the Screaming Eagles cruised to another win.

Rivers finished with a game-high 30 points, including 25 in the first half. She also added 11 assists, eight rebounds and six steals.

Ashley (10-1, 4-0 Mideastern), which plays at New Hanover on Friday at 5:30 p.m., also got a fantastic performance from Keyanna Stewart. She had 14 points, while Brynn Little added 12. Lexi Hinson added 10 points, five rebounds and five steals. 

Laney Scoggins led the way for North Brunswick (2-6, 2-2) with 14 points, while Tamiya Oates chipped in eight. The Scorpions host West Brunswick at 5 p.m. Friday

Hoggard 56, West Brunswick 27

Sophomore point guard Anya Massey led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and the Vikings rolled.

Massey also added six steals, five assists and four rebounds. 

Hoggard (9-1, 3-1 Mideastern) jumped out to an early 18-9 lead and never looked back. Madeline Elgart added 13 points, while Anna-Hollis Pitt finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Lexi Steed chipped in five points and five rebounds.

The Vikings welcome Laney on Friday at 5 p.m. West Brunswick (1-5, 1-3) at South Brunswick on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Semifinals Coastal Rivers Conference Tournament

The Hurricanes avoided the upset by outscoring the Eagles 23-9 in the second half.

Bella Erichsen scored a game-high 18 points to lead CFA (9-2), which got outscored 11-4 in the second quarter to enter halftime down 21-16.

Makenzie Mills added 10 points and Katie Rudow finished with nine for the Hurricanes, who host the winner of Coastal Christian/Harrells Christian Academy in the championship game Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Wilmington Christian Academy 32, Bethel Christian Academy 10

A double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds from Kyra Rickard helped the Patriots cruise to a win on her senior night.

WCA (4-10, 3-4 NCCSA AA District 4) got a game-high 13 points from sophomore Sarah Garner as well as nine rebounds from eighth grader Karys Townsend.

The Patriots jumped out to an 11-2 lead after the opening quarter and increased it to 23-2 at halftime.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Ashley 47, South Brunswick 38

A dominant fourth quarter gave the Screaming Eagles a comeback victory at home.

After scoring only 23 points over the first three quarters, Ashley (3-4) exploded for 24 over the final eight minutes. Mikhail Pocknett led the way with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Blake Lewis scored a team-high 16 points.

The Screaming Eagles trailed 19-10 at halftime and 30-23 after three quarters.

South Brunswick (1-6) got 14 points from Ford Disbrow and eight from Jordan Jenrette.

Ashley plays at West Brunswick on Thursday at 5 p.m. The Cougars host Ashley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Semifinals Coastal Rivers Conference Tournament

The Hurricanes easily advanced to the finals as 10 players reached the scoring column.

Thomas Watkins led the way for CFA (12-4) with 11 points, while KJ Kernan and Gavin Guion each finished with nine. The Hurricanes host the winner of Coastal Christian/Harrells Christian Academy on Friday at 7 p.m.

Guion scored all of his points in the first quarter to put the home team up 23-3. The advantage grew to 37-6 at halftime.

Simeon Jeffers chipped in eight points and Evan Marinov scored six.

New Life Christian 77, Southeastern Homeschool 66

Josh Moyers went 8 of 12 from the field for a team-high 17 points, but the Cardinals suffered a road loss.

Southeastern Homeschool (7-9) trailed 18-15 after the opening quarter and 35-29 at halftime. Brantley Springer added 15 points and Blake Batts chipped in 12. 

Next up for the Cardinals is a home game against South Wake Homeschool on Friday at 6 p.m.
