BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 1 New Hanover 44, No. 3 Hoggard 41

Like so many previous matchups between the rivals, this contest came down to the wire.

Sophomore guards Rodmik Allen and Zeus Batts combined for 33 points to help the Wildcats hold on and secure first place in the Mideastern Conference standings.

“I told them before the game that we aren’t supposed to be sitting atop this conference,” New Hanover coach Kirk Angel said. “Going into the preseason, everybody was talking about other teams because we lost all those guys from an undefeated regular season last year. It’s kind of put a chip on this kids’ shoulders.”

The Wildcats (12-1, 7-0) dominated for a majority of the first three quarters. They forced 10 first half turnovers and turned them into 15 points to build a 25-15 halftime lead.

The advantage grew to 13 points on two occasions early in the third quarter and was 40-28 with eight minutes to play.

Hoggard (12-5, 6-1) made a run in the fourth quarter by scoring on five of its first six possessions and holding the Wildcats to just a single point over the stretch.

A steal and layup from Malakahi West cut the deficit to 41-37. Two possessions later, Jack Voth scored to make it a one-point game.

Batts was fouled with 36.7 seconds on the clock, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Instead of sulking, the sophomore got back on defense and came up with a huge steal.

Nazey Myers then split a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats back up by two points with 13.7 seconds left.

The Vikings went back to Voth on the ensuing possession, and the 6-foot-6 senior was fouled with 7.1 seconds on the clock. He made the first shot, but the second attempt came up short.

Allen sealed the victory with a pair of free throws. He led the way for New Hanover with 17 points, while Batts finished with 16.

After shooting 55 percent in the first half, the Wildcats cooled off a bit over the final 16 minutes. They still finished at 41 percent (17 of 41).

West Brunswick (7-8, 2-5) got 15 points from Kevon Daniels, 11 from Carson Pope and 10 from Quincy Hankins.
