COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BOYS WRESTLING

Veterans Cup at Ashley

It was a tight race for the team title, but Hoggard scored 187 points to claim the trophy.

The Vikings had nine placewinners, including a pair of champions and four second-place finishers. North Brunswick (172.5), Ashley (168) and Topsail (153) followed behind.

Seven of the 14 weight classes featured championship bouts between a pair of area wrestlers. 

Hoggard’s Nicholas Guendner (26-13) and North Brunswick’s Kirick Gurkin (18-8) went to overtime at 150 pounds before Guendner recorded a pin in 6:44.

Teammate Pierce White pinned Joseph Ortiz of SW Onslow with 18 seconds remaining in the third period to claim the title at 215.

Host Ashley had three champions – Lucas Angstadt (106), Noah Piper (126) and Jarrett Quinlan (132).

Angstadt (22-4) had a 7-3 decision over Hoggard’s Corbin Barton (27-10), Piper (25-4) pinned Colten Lewis of White Oak in 2:16, and Quinlan (23-6) picked up a 5-2 victory over North Brunswick’s Tyler Sznaider (21-9).

North Brunswick – Max Fleckinger (113) and Sebastian Hernandez (190) – and Topsail – Tyler Adalin (120) and Aaron Martinez (175) – both had two first-place finishers. 

In the finals, Fleckinger (17-8) pinned Ashley’s Noah Bowker (14-8) in 1:24. Hernandez (14-15) had a 6-3 decision over Baylor Harris (30-12) of Pender. 

Adalin (23-9) rolled to a 9-2 win over Mason Winchell (23-7) of Ashley. Martinez (37-8) needed just 45 seconds to pin Pender’s Lazante Brown (32-7).

The only other area champion was Trask senior Nick Johnson, who improved to 26-0 with three victories at 144. He earned a 6-2 win over Ashton Shields-Adams of SW Onslow in the final.

Jolly Roger Invitational at Corinth Holders

Laney rolled to another tournament title by scored 239.5 points, which was 86 more than runner-up Seaforth.

The Buccaneers had three champions and three other finalists. 

Isaiah Wysong (24-0) picked up bonus points in his first three victories before earning a 12-8 decision over Cameron Curva of Western Harnett in the 150-pound final.

Tristan Cotto (33-4) took down Harnett Central’s Deshawn Carty by a score of 3-2 in an ultimate tiebreaker in the 157 final. He also had two pins and a 9-2 decision in the semifinals.

Mason Blue (35-1) pinned Seaforth’s Ethan Kuball in 2:34 to claim the title at 215. His other three victories were all first-period pins.

Laney’s second-place finishers were Ayden Arrington (113), Eli Thomas (132) and Mac Kopelman (165). All three picked up bonus points for the team in their three victories.

Four others – Tyler Buonocore (138), Holden Walker (175), Kaeden Smith (190) and Michael Williams (285) – made it to the third-place bout, but weren’t able to wrestle because the tournament had to be called at midnight due to NCHSAA rules.

Veterans Cup at Ashley

Four area participants claimed titles and three other finished as the runner-up.

Trask led the way with four champions – Trinitee Odom (120 pounds), Michelle Woolley (126), Lauren Hall (138) and Amelia Thalheimer (165). Teammate Stevie Braun placed second at 145. 

Claire Walters of Hoggard won both of her matches at 152. 

The other second-place finishers were Ashley’s Jessica Flowers (138) and North Brunswick’s Aspen Cook (107).

Laney cruised to the team title with 162 points by placing eight wrestlers on the podium.

Juniors Katie Simmons and Elaina Pollock were the champions at 107 and 165 pounds, respectively. Simmons (27-2) had a pair of pins and then a 12-2 major decision over Athens Drive’s Isabella Crandall in the final. Pollock (27-1) pinned all three of her opponents. 

Ay’Seante Ross (152) and Lanesha Gause (235) both reached the final before falling.

Boneyard Bash at Jack Britt

Teammates Lily Prendergast and Emma Yopp of South Brunswick claimed titles to help the Cougars finish sixth out of 24 teams with 70 points.

Prendergast (40-0) recorded a third-period pin in the semifinals and then earned a 12-0 major decision over Hoke County’s Azya Monroe in the final at 100 pounds.

Yopp (22-12) had pins in both of her matches at 165. She needed just 1:35 to deck her semifinal opponent. In the final, she pinned Pinecrest’s Saoirse Moler in 2:19.

BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 7 Ashley 40, St. Pauls 38

Brandon Ingram MLK Showcase at Kinston

Game MVP Quinn Bentley finished with 14 points to help the Screaming Eagles secure the victory.

Ashley (4-10) also got 10 points from Forrest Newton as well as eight from Keyon Jones. 

Next up is a game at North Brunswick on Friday at 8 p.m.

No. 1 New Hanover 74, Washington 47

Farmville MLK Showcase at Farmville Central

The unbeaten Wildcats led 34-20 at halftime and continued pulling away behind a game-high 22 points from junior point guard Rodmik Allen.

Two others reached double figures – Nolan Billings with 12 points and CJ Kornegay with 11. 

Allen connected on four of New Hanover’s (12-0) eight 3-pointers. 

The Wildcats take on Grace Christian at the Garner MLK Showcase at 4 p.m. Monday. 

No. 18 East Columbus 55, Purnell Swett 53

A 23-point fourth quarter helped the Gators rally for a hard-fought win.

East Columbus (4-8) trailed 40-32 after three quarters. Cainan Patrick scored 11 of his game-best 16 points over the final eight minutes. He recorded a double-double by grabbing 14 rebounds.

Jaden Troy chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds, while fellow junior Jvon Junious also reached double figures with 10 points.

The Gators return to play in the Waccamaw Conference on Friday at 7:30 when they travel to Trask.

Wallace-Rose Hill 70, No. 17 Pender 57

The Patriots suffered a nonconference defeat despite getting 16 points from senior guard Cyrus Page.

Pender (2-8), which trailed 14-11 after the opening eight minutes and 31-24 at halftime, also got 14 point from Jordan Hansley as well as eight from Desmon Thomas.

The Patriots travel to West Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Oak Forest Homeschool 55, No. 12 Southeastern Homeschool 43

Blake Batts and Brice Griffin combined for 39 points, but the Cardinals were outscored 36-24 in the second half to fall at home. 

Batts led all scorers with 18 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. Griffin finished with 11.

Southeastern Homeschool (11-10, 3-4 NCHEAC East) will try to bounce back when it hosts North Wake Homeschool on Saturday at 2 p.m.
