BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 5 Southeastern Homeschool 74, Chatham Homeschool 42

Senior guard Brantley Springer had his best performance of the season by finishing 11 of 14 from the field en route to a game-high 28 points.

Southeastern Homeschool (11-4) shot a remarkable 57 percent (30 of 53) from the field and knocked down 6 of 16 attempts from 3-point range.

Springer scored 10 points in the opening quarter to help the Cardinals build a 24-18 lead. They played outstanding defense in the second quartet to take a 38-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Jayden Johnson added 17 points, while Blake Batts and Brock Boehling both chipped in eight.

Southeastern Homeschool plays at North Wake Homeschool on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

At Corinth Holders

Even with several starters missing, Laney put together another impressive performance to finish as the runner-up with 235 points.

Riverbend, Va. claimed the team title by finishing with 241 points.

Nine Buccaneers reached the finals and six were crowned champions.

That group was once again led by two-time defending state champion Mark Samuel (29-0), who recorded three first period pins at 126 pounds. He needed only 1:33 to finish off Blake Hines of Corinth Holders in the finals.

Avery Buonocore (15-3) cruised to the title at 138 with a pin followed by back-to-back tech falls. He scored 20 points in the finals against Hoke County’s Landen Nelson.

At 152, Tristen Cotto (26-4) overcame a strong field to earn the title with three decisions. He advanced to the finals with a 5-3 ultimate tiebreaker victory before downing Cedric Griffin Jr. of Hoke County by a score of 4-2.

Owen Harshbarger (33-5) opened with a tech fall before registering back-to-back one-point decisions at 160. He won 3-2 in the semifinals and 4-3 in the finals over Cape Fear’s Calan Staub.

Alex Hopper (34-2) made it three champions in a row. After registering back-to-back pins in less than a minute, he held on for a 2-1 decision over Lennon Soaper of Riverbend in the 170 final.

Laney’s final champion was Corey Pollock (31-5) at 285. He finished with three pins, including one in 2:36 over Franklinton’s Landon Michael in the championship bout.

Charlie Bishop (21-11) just fell short at 182. He opened the tournament with a first period pin and then had a 5-0 decision, but gave up a takedown in overtime to fall 3-1 in the finals.

Noah Thomas (31-6) also had a heartbreaking 9-7 loss after reaching the final at 145 thanks to a first period pin and 6-0 decision. 

The other Buccaneer to come up short in the championship bout was Jayden Harrison (29-6) at 132. He had a 20-2 tech fall and a 6-0 decision in his opening two matches before getting pinned in 1:10 in the finals.

Trystan Richardson (33-9) placed third at 220 and Sam Kopelman (3-7) was sixth at 120.

Eliana Pollock claimed the girls title in the 160/170/182 division with three pins. It was the first action of the season for the freshman.
