3A State Championship

At Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville

Topsail sophomore Kaitlyn Obremski finished third with a time of 18:25.54 and the Pirates placed sixth as a team.

Cuthbertson had the top two finishers. Senior Madeline Hill won in 18:11.91 and sophomore Alyssa Preisano was the runner-up in 18:16.96. 

Topsail finished with 177 points and New Hanover scored 292 points to place 10th.

The Pirates got a 43rd-place finish from ECU signee Makayla Obremski (20:25.16). Senior Emma Huff (55th in 20:56.07), senior Emma Martin (56th in 20:56.59) and sophomore Lauren Pagans (57th in 20:58.31) also had solid runs.

New Hanover junior Sophie Lundin crossed the finish line in 20:08.80 to earn a 32nd-place finish. Also scoring for the Wildcats were: junior Chloe Taylor (71st in 21:42.06), freshman Meagan Lundin (77th in 22:01.87), freshman Raegan Pickard (83rd in 22:25.89) and freshman Amelia Owens (94th in 23:46.78).

South Brunswick freshman Ellie Harrington was 59th with a time of 21:07.47 and North Brunswick junior Rachel Kemp finished right behind with a time of 21:10.89.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hoggard 47, Topsail 40

The Vikings secured the home victory by outscoring the Pirates 14-2 over the final eight minutes.

Junior point guard Hoku Fisher scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that put Hoggard (3-0) on top 40-38. It was the Vikings’ first lead since the second quarter and they never trailed again.

Kris Gibbs added 16 points on seven made field goals and a pair of free throws.

Topsail (1-3) got 13 points from Canon Keziah and 11 from Carlos Vazquez.
