No. 5 Trask 76, No. 13 Pender 58

The Titans never trailed in the home victory over their rival that increased their lead in the Waccamaw conference to two games with five to play.

Jamiel Davis had an outstanding performance with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting. He also dished out four assists. Point guard Myron Mckoy added 16 points and four steals.

“We’ve got West Columbus on Friday and East Columbus on Tuesday, and neither one of those are going to be easy,” Trask coach Rodney Orr said. “Those guys are athletic and they play hard. It’s nice to be in the spot we’re in, but it’s just one at a time.”

Trask (14-4, 5-0 Waccamaw), which shot 45 percent (32 of 71) from the field and forced 29 turnovers, also got 12 points from Sherrod Henderson and 10 from Martez Davis.

The Titans led by as much as 15 in the first half before Pender (4-13, 3-2) cut the deficit to 34-25 at halftime.

A 13-2 run from Trask in the third quarter gave them a 49-31 advantage.

Pender continued to fight, and got to within nine points on three occasions over the final five minutes, but the Titans had an answer each time.

“I thought our on the ball defense was not up to par, but our off the ball defense was good and led to some deflections,” Orr said.

Mecca Carr-Bordeaux led the Patriots with 15 points. Kelvin Robinson added nine.

Both teams are back in action Friday at 7:30 p.m. Trask travels to West Columbus, while Pender plays at South Columbus.

No. 7 North Brunswick 68, No. 12 Topsail 64

After trailing by as much as 13 points in the first half, the Scorpions caught fire over the final 16 minutes to earn a hard-fought home win.

Four North Brunswick (9-10, 3-6 Mideastern) players reached double figures, led by 13 points a piece from Ronnie Ballard and Eric Mosley.

Gavin Lindbert scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, while Malakhi Daniels chipped in 10 points.

Topsail (3-15, 2-7) led 33-20 with 1:56 left in the second quarter following a pair of free throws from Eli Hebron.

The Pirates still had a 39-28 early in the third quarter before the Scorpions went on a 16-0 run that was capped by a fastbreak layup from Mosley.

There were six lead changes over the final four minutes. A layup from freshman Rhett Britt put Topsail up 59-58 with 1:40 on the clock. 

North Brunswick grabbed the lead for good on a three-point play from Daniels with 1:14 to play.

Britt led all scorers with 28 points, while Caden Wilson added 18.

The Scorpions travel to Laney at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Topsail hosts Hoggard on Friday night at 7:30.

No. 1 New Hanover 50, No. 6 Ashley 41

Sophomore forward Nolan Billings scored nine of his game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats avoid an upset.

New Hanover (14-2, 9-0 Mideastern) trailed 11-6 after the first quarter before taking a 19-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Nazey Myers added 15 points, while Jahiem Gibbs added 10. 

Nate Jarrell scored 15 points and Coen Locklear added 11 to lead Ashley (6-10, 3-6).

Next up for the Wildcats is a home game against South Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Screaming Eagles welcome Wallace-Rose Hill at 8 p.m. Thursday.

No. 4 Laney 75, No. 8 West Brunswick 63

The Buccaneers’ big three of Khalil Genwright, Josh Helms and Jarrod Vaughn combined for 68 points and 20 rebounds.

Helms led the way with 25 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Genwright had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Vaughn chipped in 19 points and five rebounds.

Laney (17-2, 7-2 Mideastern) outscored West Brunswick (7-10, 2-7) 22-10 in the fourth quarter.

The Buccaneers welcome North Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans will try to bounce back when they travel to Ashley at 8 p.m. Friday.

No. 2 Hoggard 63, No. 9 South Brunswick 46

Eleven Vikings scored in the home win that gave them a season sweep.

Jack Voth finished with a game-high 14 points. Hoggard (14-5, 8-1 Mideastern) also got 12 points from Reid Lisk and 11 from CJ Kornegay.

The Vikings connected on eight 3-pointers, including four from Lisk.  

South Brunswick (5-12, 2-7) was led by Caleb Bernard’s 11 points. 

Hoggard travels to Topsail at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while the Cougars host Whiteville in a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Fayetteville Academy 56, No. 3 Cape Fear Academy 49

Markus Pastorcic-Straun scored 14 points, but the Hurricanes suffered their second straight Coastal Rivers Conference home loss.

CFA (14-6, 1-2) also got 11 points from Angelo Vega and 10 from Simeon Jeffers. 

The Hurricanes play at Harrells Christian Academy on Thursday night at 6:45.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 7 Pender 52, No. 10 Trask 37

The Patriots downed their rival behind a 26-point performance from junior guard Jamiah Johnson.

Johnson had 10 of Pender’s (7-10, 4-1 Waccamaw) 17 points in the first quarter. The visitors led 30-14 at halftime.

Grace Bordeaux added 13 points and Linde Cline chipped in nine. 

Trask (2-15, 1-4) was led by freshman Alanah Watkins’ 16 points. 

Both teams are on the road at 6 p.m. Friday. The Patriots play at South Columbus, while the Titans visit West Columbus.

No. 4 Laney 60, No. 6 West Brunswick 45

Jada Simpson poured in 21 points, including 12 in the opening quarter, to help the Buccaneers avenge an earlier-season loss. 

Laney (11-8, 4-5 Mideastern) also got an outstanding effort from freshman Savannah Herrmann, who scored a career-high 13 points. The forward had only scored 24 total points entering the contest. 

Morgan Bellamy finished with 12 points and Hailey Woodard added 10 for West Brunswick (8-6, 3-5).

The Buccaneers host North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday, while the Trojans visit Ashley on Friday night at 6.

No. 2 Topsail 59, No. 9 North Brunswick 25

The Pirates cruised on the road to remain alone in sole possession of second place in the Mideastern Conference. 

Emmy Clark and Rhianna Garmendiz both finished with 12 points. Breanna Hebron also reached double figures with 11 points. 

Topsail (15-4, 8-1) shot 46 percent (24 of 52) from the field and came up with 21 steals. 

Next up is a home match against Hoggard at 6 p.m. Friday. North Brunswick (5-12, 1-8) returns to the court Friday at 6 p.m. at Laney.

No. 1 Hoggard 69, No. 11 South Brunswick 7

The Vikings opened the game on a 32-0 run and sent the game to a running clock early in the second half.

Anya Massey led all scorers with 17 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Fellow senior Laney Scoggins added 15 points and six steals.

Hoggard (17-2, 9-0 Mideastern) also got 11 points and four assists from freshman Tristan Shivers as well as eight points a piece from Kelly Holmgren and Anna-Hollis Pitt. 

The Vikings play at Topsail on Friday night at 6. South Brunswick (1-13, 0-9) hosts Whiteville at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
