No. 1 New Hanover 45, No. 2 Laney 37

Thanks to a dominant defensive effort and 14 big points from Nazey Myers, the Wildcats picked up a road victory in front of a capacity crowd.

The win was also the 300th career win for New Hanover (9-1, 4-0 Mideastern) coach Kirk Angel. In his 15 years with the program, Angel has a 300-84 record.

“It’s special to me, and I love that it was this group that did it,” Angel said.

The Wildcats never trailed in the contest. After Laney (13-1, 3-1) tied the score at 8-all early in the second quarter, Myers drained the game’s only 3-pointer to put the visitors on top for good.

“Nazey had a huge night,” Angel said. “He really was going downhill and making free throws.” 

Backcourt mates Rodmik Allen and Zeus Batts each finished with eight points.

New Hanover shot just 39 percent (16 of 41) from the field field, but made up for it on the defensive end. They caused 14 turnovers, which led to 15 points. 

“We wanted to come out and play aggressive and play as a team,” Myers said. “We knew they hadn’t played a team that would pressure them like we would.”

Khalil Genwright and Jarrod Vaughn, who both transferred to Laney from New Hanover for their senior seasons, combined to score 33 of the Buccaneers’ 37 points.

Genwright had 17 points, while Vaughn finished with 15.

The Wildcats host Topsail on Friday at 8 p.m. Laney travels to South Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 7 Ashley 48, No. 11 South Brunswick 37

The Screaming Eagles opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to build a lead they would never relinquish.

Trent Smith started the run with a jump hook. He scored all six of his points over the final eight minutes.

Ashley (4-6, 1-3 Mideastern) led 22-9 after the first quarter and 30-22 at halftime. 

South Brunswick (3-9, 0-4) battled back to take a 31-30 lead on a floater from Caleb Bernard with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter. 

Coen Locklear led the Screaming Eagles with 10 points. Quinn Bentley, Treyvon Doughty and Gavin Steiner all chipped in nine points.

The Cougars were led by Bernard’s 16 points. 

Both teams are back in action Friday at 7:30 p.m. Ashley plays at Hoggard, while South Brunswick welcomes Laney.

No. 10 Topsail 67, No. 6 West Brunswick 61

A fastbreak layup from freshman Rhett Britt early in the fourth quarter put the Pirates up 51-50, and the home team continued to pull away for the win.

Britt led all scorers with a career-high 21 points, including 12 in the first quarter.  

Topsail (3-10, 2-2 Mideastern) also got 16 points from Spencer Henry, 11 from Caden Wilson and 10 from Eli Hebron.

Carson Pope led West Brunswick (6-6, 1-3) with 16 points. JJ Cobb (14 points) and Jordan McCall (12 points) also reached double figures.

The Pirates play at New Hanover on Friday at 8 p.m. The Trojans host North Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 4 Hoggard 65, No. 8 North Brunswick 50

Jack Voth had another outstanding performance with a game-high 26 points to keep the Vikings unbeaten in Mideastern Conference play.

Hoggard (10-4, 4-0) scored at least 15 points in every quarter. They held a 34-21 halftime lead. 

Parker Crittenden drained three 3-pointers en route to 14 points, while Shane Hawkins chipped in 12.

North Brunswick (7-7, 1-3) got 18 points from Malakhi Daniels and 12 from Gavin Lindbert.

The Vikings host Ashley at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Scorpions travel to West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 9 Coastal Christian 48, No. 13 Southeastern Homeschool 39

Aidan Davies led all scorers with 20 points to help the Centurions complete the season sweep.

Davies went 10 of 13 from the field. Coastal Christian (8-8), which led 24-18 at halftime and 40-23 after three quarters, also got six points a piece from Kamil Harrison and Holden Martin.

Southeastern Homeschool (3-12) was led by Thomas Sousa, who finished with 17 points. 

Next up for Coastal Christian is a game at Forsyth Country Day on Friday at 7 p.m. The Cardinals welcome East Wake Homeschool at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 14 Wilmington Christian Academy 43, Gramercy Christian 26

The Patriots opened the new year with a comfortable home victory behind a game-high 13 points from Trey Pierce. 

Caleb Eckhardt and Calloway Upchurch both added six points for WCA (4-5), which hosts Liberty Christian at 7 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 6 Laney 58, No. 5 New Hanover 40

Senior guard Jada Simpson led all scorers with 28 points, and the Buccaneers rallied from a five-point halftime deficit.

Laney (9-5, 2-2) shot 43 percent (19 of 44) from the field and made 6 of 15 3-point attempts. Simpson drained four shots from beyond the arc. She also had a team-best eight rebounds.

Aniece Lewis added nine points, while Piper Conklin had seven. Bailey Willard chipped in six points and five rebounds.

New Hanover (5-5, 2-2), which led 27-22 at halftime, managed only 13 points over the final 16 minutes.

Iyana Rogers paced the Wildcats with 11 points, while Ty Holmes chipped in nine.

The Buccaneers play at South Brunswick on Friday night at 6. New Hanover host Topsail at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 1 Hoggard 70, No. 8 North Brunswick 16

Laney Scoggins scored 17 points against her former team to reach 1,000 for her career.

The Presbyterian signee scored 829 points in three years at North Brunswick before transferring to Hoggard (12-2, 4-0 Mideastern) for her final season.

Scoggins also finished with five assists, four steals and four rebounds. 

The Vikings shot 52 percent (29 of 56) from the field and got scoring contributions from 11 players. Kelly Holmgren and Anya Massey both finished with eight points, while Tristan Shivers chipped in seven. 

Next up for Hoggard is a home game against Ashley at 6 p.m. Friday. North Brunswick (4-8, 0-4) plays at West Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 3 Ashley 57, No. 11 South Brunswick 11

A double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds from Marlee Cook lifted the Screaming Eagles to a lopsided home victory.

Ashley (8-2, 4-0 Mideastern) was led by freshman Brianna Stanley’s 18 points. Mackenzie Morton also reached double figures by finishing with 11 points and four steals. 

The Screaming Eagles held a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and a 39-6 advantage at halftime. 

Both teams are back in action Friday at 6 p.m. Ashley travels to Hoggard, while South Brunswick (1-8, 0-4) welcomes Laney.

No. 2 Topsail 60, No. 4 West Brunswick 36

The Pirates assisted on 19 of their 27 made field goals and came away with 20 steals to cruise at home.

Emmy Clark finished with a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Rhianna Garmendiz added nine points, while Lilah Johnson added eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

Topsail (10-4, 3-1 Mideastern) plays at New Hanover on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Hailey Woodard scored 11 points for West Brunswick (6-4, 1-3), which welcomes North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday.
