Ella Simmons finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases to help Port City open the season with a home victory.

Lauren Clinch collected two hits and crossed the plate twice. Hannah Douglas earned the victory by striking out four batters in two innings. She also belted a home run.

Makenly Horrell struck out four batters in her one inning in the circle.

Port City grabbed the lead for good with a seven-run bottom of the second inning. They scored twice in the first, third and fourth innings.

(Game 2 of doubleheader)

Port City completed the sweep thanks to an 11-run bottom of the third inning.

Addison Wilson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Makenly Horrell had two hits, including a double, to go along with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.

Ella Simmons and Ella Zuckerman both drove in a pair of runs. Zuckerman scored twice and Simmons crossed the plate once.

Ava Cook pitched the final two innings and recorded a strikeout to secure the victory. Hannah Mills struck out one batter in her lone inning of work.

Port City (2-0) plays a doubleheader at Jacksonville Post 265 on Monday beginning at 6:30 p.m. Southport (0-2) hosts Jacksonville in a doubleheader on Wednesday night at 6:30.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Pleasure Island Post 129 16, Port City Post 545 12

The wild season opener for both teams featured 28 runs, 22 hits and 18 walks.

Pleasure Island (1-0) sent 13 batters to the plate in a 10-run top of the first inning.

Leadoff batter Branton Jernigan singled twice and scored both times. Maddox Green, Dylan Welch and Cole Ivady also had RBI hits.

Jernigan went 3-for-5, while Welch finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Pleasure Island finished with 11 stolen bases.

Port City (0-1) stormed back and grabbed a 12-10 lead following an 11-run bottom of the fourth inning that saw 15 players step into the batter’s box.

Alex Smith cleared the bases with a double to center field to give the home team the lead.

Pleasure Island loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning. Brent Avery stepped up to the plate and fouled off three two-strike pitches before hitting a three-run double.

Welch followed with a double of his own to increase the Pleasure Island lead to 14-12.

Tanner Berry tripled home Tristen Odham in the seventh inning for an insurance run. Berry scored the final run of the game on a two-out single from Connor Tew.

Grant Pyrtle led the Port City offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Winston Smith finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Coleman Cross earned the victory by pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed four hits and struck out two batters.
