COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BOYS TENNIS

Cape Fear Academy 5, New Hanover 4

A hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 victory from Caden Mathew at No. 6 singles gave the Hurricanes a 4-2 lead, and they clinched the match by cruising at No. 1 doubles.

Reigning Coastal Preps Player of the Year Hayes Gilbert rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at the top singles position. He then teamed up with Ben Kane for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

CFA’s (1-0) other singles points came from Kane (6-1, 6-3 at No. 2) and Levent Erdem (6-3, 6-1 at No. 5). 

Owen Alford (6-1, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 3) and Jack Snyder (6-3, 2-6, 10-8) secured singles points for New Hanover (4-2).

Augie Ballantine and Cutter Morgan didn’t drop a game at No. 2 doubles, while Alford and Reilly Benton earned an 8-1 win at No. 3.

The Hurricanes travel to Hoggard at 4 p.m. Monday, while the Wildcats welcome Ashley on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Southeastern Homeschool 8, North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 1

Will Artemenko rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, while Daniel Boehling (No. 3) and Eli Springer (No. 4) dropped just one game a piece for the victorious Cardinals.

Joshua Bebb (6-2, 6-0 at No. 2) and Eli Yandle (6-3, 6-4 at No. 6) also prevailed. 

Southeastern Homeschool (3-0) swept all three doubles courts. Haddon and Joshua Bebb had a score of 8-2 at No. 1, while Artemenko and Matthew Nelson won 8-1 at No. 3. Boehling and Springer received a forfeit at No. 2.

A home match against Coastal Christian at 4 p.m. Monday is next on the schedule. 

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 5 Cape Fear Academy 3, No. 6 South Brunswick 2

Georgia McGrath’s second goal in the 44th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Hurricanes improved to 4-0 on the season. 

CFA evened the scored at 1-1 when Lucy Lauber found the back of the net in the 17th minute. McGrath gave the visitors the lead for good by scoring in the 29th minute. Both of her goals were assisted by Milly Kelley.

Each goalkeeper  – CFA’s Naomi Shanewise and South Brunswick’s (2-1) Madelynne Gedman- finished with six saves. 

Meryn Deutsch and Paige Lewis each scored for the Cougars. Cassidy Oldham dished out an assist. 

Next up for the Hurricanes is a road game against Swansboro at 6 p.m. Wednesday. South Brunswick travels to New Hanover on Tuesday night at 6.

BASEBALL

No. 9 North Brunswick 8, West Bladen 5

The Scorpions finished with 12 hits, six walks and five stolen bases in the road victory. 

Cody Callahan, Jackson Evans and B.D. Lanier all went 2-for-4. Evans drove in a pair of runs, while Lanier and William Jones each scored twice. 

North Brunswick (3-1) scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 5-1 lead. 

Next up is a road game at Laney at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 1 Hoggard 4, Swansboro 0

Senior pitchers Tyler Jumper and Aiden McBride combined on a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and no walks as the Vikings remained unbeaten.

Through seven games, Hoggard is outscoring its opponents 61-8.

Logan Ponnett went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Leadoff batter Luke Vargo collected two hits and scored both times.Cam Mathews added two hits of his own. 

Jumper earned the victory by pitching five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Three of the six outs recorded by McBride came via strikeout.

The Vikings host West Brunswick on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

No. 5 West Brunswick 10, Clinton 0 (6 innings)

The Trojans bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season by scoring at least one run in five of their six trips to the plate.

Linden Clemmons led the offense by going 3-for-3 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Noah Fluharty and Garrett Powell both went 2-for-3 and crossed the plate twice. 

Luka DeRicco also had two of West Brunswick’s (6-1) 13 hits.

Cooper Wilson scattered two hits and struck out eight batters without issuing a walk in a complete game to earn the win.

A game at Hoggard on Friday at 6:30 p.m. awaits the Trojans. 

SOFTBALL

No. 4 Hoggard 20, Purnell Swett 5 (4 innings) 

ECU commit Macey Ciamillo had one of the best offensive performances in program history to give the Vikings a win at home for the second night in a row. 

Ciamillo went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs, a hit by pitch, seven RBI and four runs scored. She belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to increase Hoggard’s (4-0) lead to 6-1. 

The reigning Coastal Preps Offensive Player of the Year came up with the bases loaded an inning later and drilled a grand slam over the left field fence. She’s currently hitting .636 with four home runs. 

Ava Cook earned the victory in the circle and also finished 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch, double, four RBI and three runs scored.

Bella Roberts was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Samantha Hoemann also crossed the plate three times.

The Vikings welcome West Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

No. 5 South Columbus 7, No. 11 East Bladen 1

A four-run top of the first inning gave the Stallions a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. 

Beileigh Ward singled home Carmen Buck to begin the scoring. Ward went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. Jakiyah Graham also collected a pair of hits for South Columbus (3-1, 1-0 Waccamaw). 

Senior pitcher Olivia Watts allowed an unearned run and recorded four strikeouts in a complete game. 

East Bladen (0-1, 0-1) got two hits a piece from Gracey Clark and Niyah Wooten. 

The teams will meet again, this time at South Columbus, on Friday evening at 6.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Cape Fear Academy 14, North Brunswick 3

Senior Megan Connaughton finished with a game-high six points by scoring four goals and dishing out a pair of assists to lead the Hurricanes to their first victory.

Liza Wells added three goals and two assists, while Elizabeth Harris finished with three goals, one assist and six draw controls.

CFA (1-2) also got one goal and one assist from Tyler Beacham and Olivia Hollingsworth. The other goals came from Sadie Branch and Macy Stengle.

Freshman goalie Phoebe Schroeder made four saves. 

The Hurricanes host Arendell Parrott Academy at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
