BOYS SOCCER

No. 15 Ashley 4, No. 2 Pinecrest 4 (Ashley wins 4-3 in penalty kicks)

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Junior Keegan Peat buried his third penalty kick of the match to give the Screaming Eagles an upset victory over the previously unbeaten Patriots.

Ashley (9-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute off a goal from Kevin Tejeda and the score remained the same until halftime.

Things picked up over the final 40 minutes. Pinecrest scored in the opening minute of the second half, but Peat responded with a penalty kick goal to put the visitors back on top.

After Pinecrest evened the score at 2-all, Peat converted another penalty kick. The home team was awarded a penalty kick of their own with 25 minutes to play and converted to once again tie the score.

John Jernigan put Ashley back on top with a header, but once again Pinecrest responded and sent the game into overtime with a goal in the 75th minute.

Goalkeeper Ben Blankenship made a terrific save at the end of regulation and then stopped a penalty kick just 30 seconds into overtime.  

After 30 minutes of scoreless action, the game moved into a penalty kick shootout. Kalani Harris, Joahan Martinez and Bayron Arzu all converted and the Patriots missed a pair of attempts. That set up the game winner from Peat on the final attempt.

The Screaming Eagles will play at No. 10 Apex on Thursday at a time to be announced. They picked up an 8-0 win at No. 7 Pine Forest.

No. 5 Topsail 17, No. 12 Croatan 5

No. 8 West Brunswick 16, No. 9 Northern Durham 0

First round NCHSAA 1A/2A/3A playoffs

Goalie Kyle Wagner registered his second consecutive shutout by making 10 saves and the Trojans advanced to the second round.

Ian Gentile and Ryan Wagner led the offense with four goals and one assist. West Brunswick (3-8) also got two goals and three assists from Isaac Parson. Tanner Zemke finished with a hat trick. 

Charlie Doherty added one goal and one assist, while Josh Russ and Mason DiBenedetto both found the back of the net once. Christian Hardy dished out an assist.

The Trojans play at No. 1 Cape Fear on Wednesday at a time to be announced.

No. 6 Hoggard 13, No. 11 Leesville Road 8

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Vikings remained unbeaten thanks to hat tricks from Connor Jones and Jake Hession.

Charles Wilt put home a pair of goals, while Aidan Flynn and Eli Meyer each added one goal and two assists. Hoggard (10-0) also got one goal a piece from Kyle McCarthy, Cayden Hollar and Zack Coyle.

Next up for the Vikings is a home match against No. 14 Holly Springs on Wednesday at a time to be announced. The Golden Hawks picked up a 12-6 victory over No. 3 Wakefield.

No. 15 Ashley 16, No. 2 New Bern 3

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Screaming Eagles built a 7-2 halftime lead and continued to pull away in the road victory.

No individual stats were provided. 

Ashley (6-4) plays at No. 7 Broughton on Wednesday at a time to be announced. The Caps advanced with a 17-3 win over No. 10 Wake Forest.

Sophomore Kiarra Masnick put home four goals and added an assist to help the Buccaneers advance.

Laney (9-2), who will visit No. 2 Cardinal Gibbons on Wednesday at a time to be announced, also got three goals and one assist from Julia Jacobi as well as two goals from Avery Woodcock.

Kaia Dillon dished out a pair of assists.

GIRLS SOCCER

New Hanover 1, North Brunswick 0

Megan Lundin scored the lone goal in the opening half and the Wildcats held on to earn a season-opening road victory.

New Hanover (1-0) goalkeeper Bella Ellison earned the clean sheet.

North Brunswick (0-1) got a combined 12 saves from sophomore goalkeepers Cam Phillips and Mackenzie McKeithan. 

The Wildcats host Topsail at 5 p.m. Wednesday, while the Scorpions play at South Brunswick on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Richlands 2, Trask 1

Senior Anisa Lewis put home a goal in the second half, but the Titans fell at home in the season opener.

Goalkeeper Leanna Pfeiffer made seven saves for Trask (0-1), which plays at Pender on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

SOFTBALL

West Brunswick 12, Ashley 4

Anna Frazier and Gracie Griffin combine to strike out 11 batters and the Trojans exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to secure a road victory.

Ashlyn Darby gave West Brunswick (1-0) a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the third inning. Griffin added an RBI double an inning later. 

Darby finished with five RBI, while Griffin added three walks and scored three runs. Frazier drove in a pair of runs and Lillie McLamb went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Both teams are back in action Thursday at 6 p.m. The Trojans host Laney and Ashley (0-1) travels to Hoggard.

Pender 5, East Carteret 2

Methodist commit Kaitlyn Beaver drove in three runs and the Patriots opened the season with a road win.

Her RBI triple to right field in the fifth inning put Pender (1-0) on top 3-0. She later scored on a wild pitch. Tyanna Holmes drove in the final run on a two-out double in the seventh inning.

The Patriots hosts Trask at 6 p.m. Wednesday

At Pine Valley Country Club

Sophomore John Logan of Hoggard shot an even-par 72 to help the Vikings claim the season-opening match on their home course.

Teammate Tate Bowyer was the runner-up with a 74. Laney’s Dylan Workman placed third with a 75 and the top-5 was rounded out by New Hanover teammates Justin Tracy (77) and Web Cowden (79).

South Brunswick 338, North Brunswick 357, West Brunswick 372, Topsail 373

At Magnolia Greens

South Brunswick’s Ralph Stephenson fired a 3-over-par 75 to secure a five-shot victory over West Brunswick’s Ryan Jahr.

The Cougars also counted an 84 from Curtis Williams, an 87 from Landon LeClerc and a 92 from Parker Bumgarner. 

North Brunswick’s GW Roehner shot an 83 to finish third, while Topsail’s Jack Batts tied for fourth with Williams.

Harrells Christian Academy 232, Cape Fear Academy 245, Fayetteville Academy 321

At Pine Valley Country Club

William Wells led Cape Fear Academy with a 79 to finish four strokes behind medalist Colby Stoppelebin of Harrells Christian Academy.

The Hurricanes also counted an 82 from Will Pohlman and an 84 from Pierce Underwood.

BOYS TENNIS

Cape Fear Academy 8, Arendell Parrott Academy 1

Noah Durham won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, while Algernon Butler (No. 2) and Ben Kane (No. 6) both won 6-0, 6-1 to lead the Hurricanes.

CFA (2-0) also got singles victories from Evan Das (6-1, 6-1 at No. 3) and JR Johnston (6-3, 6-0 at No. 4).

Johnston and Jason Huang didn’t drop a game at No. 3 doubles, while Butler and Das earned an 8-1 win at No. 1. Hayes Gilbert and KJ Kernan completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory at No. 2.

The Hurricanes host Greenfield School on March 23 at 4 p.m.

Topsail 9, Laney 0

Connor Hill won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teammates Bobby Toler (No. 4), David Li (No. 5) and Justin Koehler (No. 6) all dropped only two games to help the Pirates complete the sweep.

Topsail (1-0) also got singles victories from Josh Martin (6-2, 7-5 at No. 2) and Nolan Hill (6-0, 2-6, 10-5 at No. 3).

Toler and Koehler teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Martin and Li secured an 8-2 victory at No. 2, while Hill and Hill won 8-3.

The Pirates play at New Hanover at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Laney (0-1) hosts West Brunswick on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Hoggard 9, South Brunswick 0

The Vikings didn’t drop a game in any of the four matches contested. 

Dalton Feldman (No. 1), Varun Varadarajan (No. 2) and Quaid Sutherland (No. 3) all rolled to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories.

Varadarajan and Southerland cruised to an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Hoggard (1-0) received walkovers in three singles and two doubles matches.

The Vikings play at Ashley at 4 p.m. Wednesday. South Brunswick (0-1) is back in action Monday at 4 p.m. at Topsail.
