SOFTBALL

No. 4 Hoggard 4, No. 1 Topsail 2

Sophomore Macey Ciamillo had a big day at the plate and in the circle to lead the Vikings to a win at home.

Ciamillo finished 3-for-3 with a solo home run and three RBI. She also pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.

Hoggard (4-2, 2-0 Mideastern) matched Topsail (2-2, 0-2) with one run in each of the second and third innings.

The Vikings grabbed the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. A bunt single from Sydney Ciamillo plated Gracie Mabrey. Later in the inning, Macey Ciamillo ripped a two-out double to score her older sister.

Olivia Smark, Jocelyn Velasquez and Zoey Vincent all had two hits in the defeat.

Both teams take the field again Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Vikings host South Brunswick, while the Pirates travel to North Brunswick.

No. 7 West Brunswick 9, No. 5 Ashley 8 (8 innings)

The Trojans scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extras, and then won on a walk-off sacrifice fly from Kaylee Williams.

Hailey Woodard started the big seventh inning with a one-out single to center field. Three straight errors allowed two runs to score. Makaylee Sanders then laced a two-run double that cut the deficit to 8-7.

Following a ground out, Kaylee Sellers came up with a huge base hit that plated pinch runner Emma Bartlett with the tying run.

Olivia Brown led off the bottom of the eight with a single. She was replaced by courtesy runner Bella Little, who advanced to third base on an error and scored on the sac fly from Williams.

Sanders, Sellers and Brown all had two hits for West Brunswick (3-5, 1-1 Mideastern).

Emerson Lee had two hits for Ashley (2-6, 0-2), including a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning that put her team in front 5-3. 

The Trojans play at Laney on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles welcome East Columbus at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 2 Laney 24, No. 9 North Brunswick 3 (5 innings)

Makenzi Curry went 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored in the lopsided road win.

Laney (3-2, 2-0 Mideastern) also got home runs from Mya Carr and Mack Murnane. 

Ali Bunch earned the victory by striking out two batters in three innings. Curry recorded four strikeouts in her two innings in the circle.

Bunch finished 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Layla Carr was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Mya Carr drove in two runs and scored twice.

The Buccaneers welcome West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday. North Brunswick (1-5, 0-1) hosts Topsail at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 8 Pender 8, Hobbton 6

A seven-run top of the fourth inning, which started with a solo home run from Olivia Gurganus, lifted the Patriots.

Haley Gantt, Lillie Hanson and Kaylee Woodcock each had RBI doubles, while Zalie Rivenbark drove in a run with a single.

Pender (3-3) collected 10 hits, including two a piece from Woodcock and Katie Iddings. Hanson had a pair of RBI, while Gurganus crossed the plate two times.

Hanson recorded 15 strikeouts with no walks in the circle to pick up the victory.

The Patriots return home to take on Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BASEBALL

No. 2 South Brunswick 1, No. 1 New Hanover 0 (8 innings)

Jordan Daniels singled home Jaden Marvin with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cougars a victory in the battle of unbeatens.

Marvin was hit by a pitch with two outs. Freshman shortstop Grady Sotriffer followed with a single. Walker Jenkins was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up Daniel’s walk-off hit.

South Brunswick (6-0, 2-0 Mideastern) has now won five straight games in the series.

Both pitchers were incredible. Marvin allowed only one hit and struck out seven batters in a complete game. He retired 19 batters in a row before issuing a two-out walk to Davis Hinshaw in the top of the eighth inning.

New Hanover’s (5-1, 1-1) Sean Smith was the hard-luck loser. He also went the distance and allowed only five hits with six strikeouts. 

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Cougars play at Hoggard, while the Wildcats visit Ashley.

No. 4 North Brunswick 8, No. 7 Laney 7

After allowing three runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Scorpions responded with two of their own in the bottom of the frame to pick up a walk-off win.

Aydean White singled home Sytke Bryant to tie the score at 8-all. White later scored the winning run on an error. The Buccaneers were attempting to turn an inning-ending double play, but the throw from the catcher to the first baseman wasn’t handled.

White finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Garrett Gore collected three hits to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.

North Brunswick (7-1, 1-1 Mideastern) led 5-0 after two innings.

Cam McCotter got Laney (2-2, 1-1) on the board with a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. The Buccaneers took a brief 7-6 lead on a three-run double from TJ Ziermann with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

McCotter, Ziermann and Elliott Melind all finished with two hits.

The Scorpions host Topsail at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Laney travels to Swansboro on Monday night at 7.

No. 6 Topsail 6, No. 3 Hoggard 4

Freshman right-handed pitcher Rhett Britt allowed only one run with eight strikeouts in six innings to help the Pirates pick up a road victory.

Britt finished the game with 87 pitches, including 57 for strikes. 

Topsail (2-4, 1-1 Mideastern) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings despite managing only two hits.

The advantage was still 6-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh, but Hoggard (5-1, 1-1) battled back thanks to four walks and two hit by pitches. The bases were loaded with one out, but Grady Swinson was able to shut the door by getting a fly out and ground out.

Cameron Rickabaugh led the Pirates offensively by going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two hit by pitches and three runs scored. 

Tyler Schaudt was the only Viking to collect multiple hits.

Topsail plays at North Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hoggard welcomes South Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:30.

No. 5 Ashley 9, No. 8 West Brunswick 0

Sophomore pitchers Cole Barnes and Jackson Lee combined on a three-hitter, and the Screaming Eagles collected 14 hits to cruise.

Barnes earned the victory by striking out five batters in 6 1/3 innings. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.

Ashley (5-4, 1-1 Mideastern) catcher Tanner Berry finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Cane Mehling reached base four times and scored three runs. 

The Screaming Eagles host New Hanover at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. West Brunswick (4-3, 0-2) travels to Terry Sanford on Saturday at 3 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 10 Trask 3, White Oak 0

The Titans improved to 6-1 on the season thanks to two goals and an assist from Kenya Lewis.

Freshman Alina Sandoval scored the other goal and also dished out an assist.

Goalkeeper Caroline Metcalfe stopped both shots she faced to earn the clean sheet.

Trask hosts St. Pauls on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Jacksonville 2, No. 3 Laney 0

Senior goalkeeper Reagan Turner had an outstanding performance with 10 saves, but the Buccaneers were defeated.

Laney (5-2-1) begins Mideastern Conference play at home against South Brunswick on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Laney 18, New Hanover 2

The Buccaneers scored six unanswered goals in the second quarter to build an insurmountable 10-2 halftime lead.

Carson Adkins led the way offensively with five goals. Brandon Dillen chipped in three goals and two assists, while Logan Shaw had three goals and one assist.

Laney’s (5-1, 3-1 Mideastern) Tyler Rutherford won 10 faceoffs.

New Hanover (1-4, 0-3) got one goal a piece from Tripp Finnery and Steven Smith. 

Next up for the Buccaneers is a road game at South Brunswick on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Wildcats visit South Brunswick at 5 p.m. Monday.

Laney 14, New Hanover 4

Junior goalie Ava Kunza finished with 13 saves as the Buccaneers rolled to their sixth straight victory.

Laney (6-0, 4-0 Mideastern) got hat tricks from Ella Hawks, Avery Hoey and Erin McConnell. 

Mia Shade chipped in two goals, while Julia Campbell, Caitlin Cronemiller and Hailey Street each found the back of the net once.

Cronemiller dished out three assists and McConnell had a pair.

The Buccaneers play at Fuquay-Varina on Monday night at 6:30. New Hanover (3-2, 1-2) travels to South Brunswick at 7 p.m. Monday.

A pair of tiebreaker doubles victories helped the Pirates secure an upset at home.

Josh Martin and Bentley Reese won 9-8(3) at No. 1 doubles, while Daniel Li and Nolan Luchansky prevailed by a score of 9-8(4) at No. 3.

Topsail (5-0, 5-0 Mideastern) earned a singles split thanks to a hard-fought 7-6, 2-6, 12-10 win at No. 2 singles from Nolan Hill.

Josh Martin (6-2, 6-1 at No. 1) and Jack Teeter (7-5, 6-4 at No. 6) had the other singles victories.

The Pirates play at Hoggard on Monday at 4 p.m. New Hanover (4-1, 4-1) will look to bounce back when it hosts West Brunswick on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Hoggard 8, Ashley 1

From Thursday

Samin Bhan (No. 1) and Bret Li (No. 3) cruised to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories and the Vikings rolled.

Ridge Earnhardt dropped only one game at No. 6 singles. Hoggard (4-1, 4-0 Mideastern) also got singles wins from Logan Tamadon (6-3, 6-1 at No. 2), Wells Lee (6-4, 6-4 at No. 4) and Ashwin Varadarajan (6-3, 6-1 at No. 5).

Li and Varadarajan won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Jake Persuit and Sahil Patel earned an 8-2 victory at No. 3.

Ashley’s (5-4, 2-3) lone point came from Aidan Tingle and Charlie Streb, who had a score of 8-6 at No. 2.

The Vikings welcome Topsail on Monday at 4 p.m., while the Screaming Eagles host Topsail at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Laney 8, South Brunswick 1

The Buccaneers picked up five singles wins and swept all three doubles courts to prevail.

Junha Pyo (No. 6) didn’t lose at game at No. 6 singles. Caedmon Hobgood (No. 2) and Yusuke Sugawara (No 5) both dropped only two games. 

Laney (6-1, 4-1 Mideastern) also got singles victories from Campbell Tucker (6-3, 6-0 at No. 1) and Charlie Tucker (6-0, 7-5 at No. 3).

Sugawara and Pyo had an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. The teams of Patrick Regan/Max Blackmon (No. 2) and Ibrahim Moya/Robert Feamster (No. 3) had identical 8-6 scores.

South Brunswick’s (2-6, 0-5) only win came by a score of 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 4 singles from freshman Cooper Pittman. 

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Buccaneers host Hoggard, while the Cougars welcome North Brunswick.
