Bradley Mora headed home what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 39th minute and the Wildcats tacked on three second half goals to advance to the third round.

New Hanover (13-0) will host No. 3 Clayton on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s third round, which the Comets won 6-1.

“The goal at the end of the first half going into the wind was huge,” New Hanover coach TJ Rennie said. “We knew if we could get to the second half without giving up a goal then we would get the wind at our back, and it made such an impact on everything that happened on the field.”

The Wildcats dominated possession over the final 40 minutes. Aidan Payne headed home a deflected shot in the 46th minute and Christian Mullins put the game out of reach with a goal off a terrific pass from Payne with 15 minutes remaining.

The final goal was scored by Chase Schardt.
