COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

***The rankings by each area team come from the Coastal Preps Power Rankings***

SOFTBALL

No. 2 Laney 6, No. 4 Hoggard 1

The Buccaneers capped an impressive week with a comfortable home victory over their county rival.

Four of Laney’s (7-1, 4-0 Mideastern) six runs scored on two-out hits. Junior shortstop Layla Carr was the tone-setter at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-2 with two walks, four stolen bases and four runs scored.

Carr put the Buccaneers on top with a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the second inning. Kalli Short followed with a double that allowed Carr to cross the plate.

Isabella Stevens increased the lead to 4-1 with a double in the third inning.

Mackenzi Curry, who belted a solo home run in the 11th inning to lift Laney to a 1-0 win at South Brunswick on Tuesday, added to the lead with a two-out base hit in the fourth.

Carr scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning on a two-out double from Bailey Bettencourt. Seven of the nine starters finished with at least one hit.

“The girls did a great job tonight with two strikes in those two-out situations of just shortening their swings and taking what was given to them,” Laney coach Bradley Rhodes said. “We found some holes and were able to add on runs every innings, which was huge.”

Curry allowed a leadoff home run to reining Coastal Preps Offensive Player of the Year Macey Ciamillo, but she settled in nicely. The senior allowed just three more hits and struck out eight batters in a complete game.

“She pitched a little bit her sophomore year and then got a little more mound time as a junior, but she’s been biding her time,” Rhodes said. “She’s come in this year and done an outstanding job. We’ve got a good defense behind her and she’s using them to her advantage.”

Ciamillo had two hits to lead the way for Hoggard (6-1, 3-1).

The Buccaneers host West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Vikings welcome Topsail on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Brown doubled the lead with a base hit. Aubrey Brown walked with the bases loaded, and Grace Hutzell followed with a two-run double to right field.
