BOYS TENNIS

Cape Fear Academy 5, Southeastern Homeschool 4

The Hurricanes took two of three doubles courts, and then picked up straight set singles wins at the top three singles spots to hold on for a victory.

Grant Kleppinger and Cole Stockman won by a score of 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Hayes Gilbert and Ben Kane had an 8-4 win at No. 2 to give CFA (3-0) a 2-1 lead.

Gilbert dropped only one game at No. 1 singles. Stockman had a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 2 and Kleppinger won by a score of 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3.

Southeastern Homeschool’s (1-1) singles wins came from Daniel Boehling (6-3, 6-4 at No. 4), Joshua Bebb (4-6, 6-0, 10-7 at No. 5) and Eli Springer (6-0, 7-6 at No. 6).

Bebb teamed up with Will Artemenko for a 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles. 

The Hurricanes visit New Hanover on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Cardinals play at Coastal Christian on April 3 at 4 p.m.

Hoggard 5, New Hanover 4

A dramatic 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 victory from sophomore Ashwin Varadarajan at No. 4 singles proved to be the difference as the Vikings won their third match of the week.

Hoggard (7-1, 7-0 Mideastern) led 4-2 after singles play thanks to wins from Samin Bhan (6-3, 7-5 at No. 2), Bret Li (6-2, 6-2 at No. 3) and Wells Lee (6-3, 6-0 at No. 5).

Bhan and Lee prevailed by a score of 8-3 at No. 3 doubles for the fifth and deciding point.

New Hanover (5-2, 5-2) got singles victories from Augie Ballantine (6-1, 6-1 at No. 1) and Bryce Morrison (6-4, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 6).

Ballantine and Sam Bradshaw lost only two games at No. 1 doubles, while Morrison teamed up with Jack Snyder at No. 2 for an 8-5 win.

The Vikings travel to West Brunswick at 4 p.m. Tuesday, while the Wildcats host Cape Fear Academy on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Topsail 6, Laney 3

The Pirates remained one game behind Hoggard in the Mideastern Conference standings with a home win.

Topsail’s (7-1, 7-1) singles victories came from Josh Martin (6-1, 6-0 at No. 1), Bentley Reese (6-4, 7-5 at No. 3), Daniel Li (6-3, 6-0 at No. 5) and Jack Teeter (6-1, 6-4 at No. 6).

Martin and Reese had an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Teeter and Nolan Luchansky had an 8-6 victory at No. 3.

Laney’s (6-3, 4-3) Charlie Betts held on for a 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 win at No. 4 singles. The other points came from Campbell Tucker (6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles) and Charlie Tucker/Patrick Regan (8-2 at No. 2 doubles).

Next up for the Pirates is a match at South Brunswick on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Buccaneers visit North Brunswick at 4 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

New Hanover 12, West Brunswick 8

Blair Mickle scored a team-high four goals for the victorious Wildcats.

New Hanover (5-3, 3-3 Mideastern) also got two goals a piece from Lucy Dimock, Ava Martin and Abby Sealey.

Elsie Lewis found the back of the net once and dished out two assists. The other goal was scored by Annie Howard.

Sophomore goalie Bella Cosgrove made eight saves.

Macie Coley led West Brunswick (2-5, 1-5) with four goals and three assists. Lauren Nelson had eight draw controls.

Both teams are back in action at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Wildcats play at Hoggard, while the Trojans host South Brunswick.

Hoggard 11, Laney 7

After falling behind 4-0, the Vikings went on a 6-0 run to grab the lead for good and take over sole possession of first place in the Mideastern Conference.

Senior midfielder Emily Failla had a terrific game with three goals, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and seven draw controls.

Hoggard (7-1, 6-0) also got three goals and one assist from Adriyana Garrison as well as two goals from Anneleise Meyer. 

Logan Campbell, Mia Frick and Vella Meadows put home the other goals.

Avery Hoey scored twice for Laney (8-1, 5-1), while Lolly Maginnes and Hailey Street each had one goal and one assist.

The other goals were scored by Caitlin Cronemiller, Ella Hawks and Haleigh Thompson. 

The Vikings host New Hanover at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Buccaneers welcome Topsail on Tuesday night at 7.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hoggard 14, Laney 9

The Vikings put the game away by outscoring the Buccaneers 4-1 in the fourth quarter.

Aidan Flynn led the way with three goals and two assists, while Jake Stone also had a hat trick. Hoggard (6-1, 6-0 Mideastern) got two goals and one assist from Zach Coyle, Sean Hession and Conner Savage.

Jackson Burgee scored once and handed out two assists, while Jeremy Conklin found the back of the net once.

Conklin and Cole Luhrsen combined to win 19 of 27 faceoffs, while goalies Tommy Burgee and Ben Long stopped 23 of the 32 shots they faced.

Laney (6-2, 4-2) goalie Colin Willis finished with 14 saves. Logan Shaw put home four goals, while Brandon Dillen had two goals and one assist.

The other goals were scored by Carson Adkins, Tyler Rutherford and Fields Woodard.

Hoggard plays at Middle Creek on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Buccaneers host Orange at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

New Hanover 11, West Brunswick 8

Addison Kamm scored a game-high five goals and Caius Allman finished with a hat trick to give the Wildcats their first Mideastern Conference victory.

New Hanover (2-6, 1-5) led 4-0 after the opening quarter. Tripp Finnerty, Steven Smith and Christian Spearman-Johnson also scored.

Harry Doherty had four goals and fellow sophomore Zach Daley added three for West Brunswick (0-6, 0-6). Noah Hewett added one goal and one assist.

Both teams play Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Wildcats visit Hoggard, while the Trojans host South Brunswick.

SOFTBALL

No. 9 North Brunswick 16, No. 5 Trask 6 (6 innings)

The Scorpions pounded out 20 hits and capitalized on five errors from the Titans to cruise at home.

Juniors Gracie Christianson and Hailey Price both finished 4-for-5. Christianson had a triple and five runs scored, while Price hit a double and had five RBI.

North Brunswick (2-6) scored at least two runs in every inning except the third. 

Mary Williamson went 3-for-5 with a double, home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Jelene Avila crossed the plate three times, while Shanley Hunt and Blair Sampson each scored twice. 

Nilah Holmes had two of Trask’s (5-3) five hits.

The Scorpions welcome Hoggard at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Titans host West Columbus at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 2 Laney 9, Dixon 3

Audrey Bergum had a big day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a stolen base and three runs scored to help the Buccaneers complete the season sweep.

Laney (5-2) broke a scoreless tie by scoring twice in the top of the third inning. The Buccaneers added three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Ali Bunch finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. She also earned the save by striking out three batters in 2 1/3 innings.

Next up is a home game against Garner on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 3 Hoggard 13, Purnell Swett 2 (5 innings)

After falling behind 2-0 after the opening inning, the Vikings exploded for 13 unanswered runs. 

Macey Ciamillo and Maddie Scanlan led the way offensively by going 2-for-3 with a walk, four RBI and one run scored.

Ava Cook also had two hits and a walk. The freshman crossed the plate three times. Bella Roberts and Gracie Mabrey combined for five walks, and the duo scored each time.

Cook earned the victory by scattering four hits in a complete game. Both runs she allowed were unearned.

Hoggard (6-2) plays at North Brunswick on Friday night at 6:30.

North Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 7, No. 6 West Brunswick 6

The Trojans outhit the visitors 13-9, but weren’t able to overcome a 7-2 deficit.

Sophomore second baseman Kaylee Williams went 3-for-5 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot.

West Brunswick (2-7) also got two hits a piece from McCayla Kelly, Kaylee Sellers, Makaylee Sanders and Hailey Woodard.

Freshman Avilia West worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored on Sellers’ second double of the game to cut the deficit to one run. 

Sellers advanced to third base on an error on a sacrifice bunt from Marissa Sellers, but both runners were stranded as the next three batters were retired. 

Two pitchers – Ava Caison and Olivia Brown – combined to strike out seven batters.

The Trojans play at Topsail on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

No. 3 North Brunswick 12, No. 8 Trask 1 (5 innings)

Sophomore righty Will Jones scattered two hits and recorded six strikeouts in a complete game to lead the Scorpions to a mercy-rule win.

North Brunswick (8-2) sent 16 batters to the plate in a 10-run bottom of the fourth inning that featured eight walks.

Cody Callahan had a pair of RBI singles in the frame. He finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.

Isaiah Greer and B.D. Lanier each worked two walks and crossed the plate twice. Lanier, Caden Cook and Garrett Gore all finished with two RBI.

Trask (7-2) got an RBI single from Benji Faircloth in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Scorpions host Hoggard at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Titans open Waccamaw Conference play at home against West Columbus on Tuesday at 6 p.m. 

Dixon 11, No. 10 Coastal Christian 10 (8 innings)

Parker Jones, Dominic Libretto and Jake Young all had two hits, but the Centurions were defeated on the road.

Jones went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Libretto and Young were each 2-for-4 with a walk. 

Young and Jack Burton drove in two runs a piece.

Coastal Christian (4-4) led 3-0 after two innings. They trailed 6-4 before scoring five runs in the top of the seventh, but Dixon was able to send the game to extra innings and win on an error.

Next up for the Centurions is a home game against Wake Christian Academy on Friday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 10 Trask 2, St. Pauls 0

The Titans ran their winning streak to five match by getting a goal a piece from Kenya Lewis and Alina Sandoval.

Next up for Trask (7-1) is a home match against West Columbus on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 13 Southeastern Homeschool 2, Southwest Wake Homeschool 1

Sarah Cutler scored a pair of second half goals as the Cardinals opened conference play with a home victory.

Southeastern Homeschool (1-1, 1-0 NCHEAC East) hosts East Wake Homeschool on Thursday at 4 p.m.

No. 6 West Brunswick 1, No. 8 New Hanover 1

The host Trojans led 1-0 at halftime, but the Wildcats found the equalizer from sophomore Estefany Qurterio-Felipe in the second half to earn the draw.

West Brunswick (5-0-2, 0-0-2) hosts South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday. New Hanover (2-1-2, 0-1-1) welcomes New Hanover on Tuesday night at 6.

Hoggard 148.5, New Hanover 100.5, South Brunswick 9, West Brunswick 9

Mideastern Conference meet at Hoggard

Junior Ethan Panz secured victories in the 100 meter hurdles (16.0) and pole vault (11-0) to lead the host Vikings to the meet win.

Jackson Travis cleared 6-0 in high jump, while the Vikings also got first-place finishes on the track from Benjamin DiParisi (800 in 2:04.8), Luke Adams (1,600 in 4:29.7) and Ryan Ibarra (3,200 in 9:55.1).

The Vikings’ strong group of distance runners helped them capture the 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Brethan Barnhill and Devonte Patterson had two victories a piece for New Hanover. 

Barnhill sprinted his way to wins in the 100 (10.5) and 200 (22.2), while Patterson won both throwing events. He had a distance of 110-11 in discus and 38-10.5 in shot put.

The Wildcats’ other individual victories came from Maquenly Diaz-Crespo (400 in 53.5), David Godin (300 hurdles in 43.1), Rashawn Simon (22-3 in long jump) and Donnell Holmes (43-6 in triple jump).

New Hanover also crossed the finish line first in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

Mideastern Conference meet at Hoggard

The Vikings cruised thanks to top-three finishes in six events.

Ella Feehan had victories in the 100 meter hurdles (17.4) and long jump (16-0).

Hoggard also got individual wins on the track from Shea Hoffacker (400 in 1:05.0), Luci Hosley (800 in 2:30.2), Annie Mulligan (1,600 in 5:26.4) and Savannah Moore (3,200 in 11:40.2). The Vikings claimed three of four relays. 

Lillian Hulls (29-0 in triple jump), Anna Kate Chance (82-4 in discus), Nami Baggett (31-6 in shot put) and Kylie Sasser (8-6 in pole vault) were also victorious.

New Hanover standout junior Meagan Lundin won three individual events – 100 in 12.2, 200 in 25.9 and 300 hurdles in 48.3.

The only other victory came from Laney’s Madison Strickland in the high jump, where she cleared 4-10.
