SOFTBALL

No. 1 South Brunswick 8, No. 7 Ashley 1

Sophomore Kina Davis was once again outstanding both in the circle and at the plate to lead the Cougars to a dominant road win.

Davis pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts. She scattered just three hits and issued three walks. 

Batting in the leadoff spot, Davis went 3-for-5 with a double as well as an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning that capped the scoring.

South Brunswick (6-3, 2-1 Mideastern) scored twice in the top of the first inning. Gracin Johnson beat out an infield single and scored on a passed ball. Tyianna Cummings then ripped a two-out single to center field that allowed Addison Woodruff to cross the plate.

After tacking on one run in the fourth, fifth and six innings, the Cougars put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh.

Cummings, Johnson, Lily Knox and Tabatha Martin all collected two hits. Haley Kirby was the lone player to score two runs.

Ashley’s (2-8, 0-3) run was scored by Deirdre Donovan in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Cougars host Laney at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles visit Hoggard on Tuesday night at 6.

No. 3 Hoggard 18, No. 9 North Brunswick 2 (6 innings)

For the second night in a row, the Vikings rolled to a mercy-rule road victory.

Hoggard (7-2, 4-0 Mideastern) finished with 14 hits, including three from Macey Ciamillo. The sophomore also threw a complete game with seven strikeouts.

Sydney Ciamillo, Ava Cook, Gracie Mabrey, Alyssa Norris and Bella Roberts all finished with two hits.

Cook had a double, triple, three RBI and two runs scored from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Roberts and Sydney Ciamillo each crossed the plate three times, while Mabrey and Addie Wilson drove in two runs a piece.

The score was 3-2 before the Vikings exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. They added eight more runs an inning later.

North Brunswick’s (2-7, 0-3) Blair Sampson hit a triple and scored a run.

Next up for Hoggard is a home game against Ashley on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Scorpions visit West Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 4 Topsail 16, No. 6 West Brunswick 3 (5 innings)

The top three batters in the Pirates’ lineup – Zoey Vincent, Kennedy Sloan and Emmy Clark – combined to go 6-for-10 with six RBI and five runs scored.

Topsail (4-3, 2-2) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple from Clark and a sac fly from Olivia Smark. They pulled away for good with seven runs in the third and six more in the fourth.

Third baseman Rylee Reuter finished 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Jaylyn Noble had two hits, two walks and two runs scored.

Sloan earned the victory by allowing one earned run on one hit with seven strikeouts in a complete game.

Kasey Pigott had West Brunswick’s (3-8, 1-3) lone hit in the third inning.

The Pirates welcome New Bern at 6 p.m. Wednesday, while the Trojans host North Brunswick on Tuesday night at 6:30.

No. 2 Laney 8, Garner 2

Ali Bunch struck out 13 batters and Mackenzi Curry belted her third home run to lead the Buccaneers to a nonconference win at home.

Laney (6-2) finished with 14 hits, including three from Curry. She doubled, drove in three runs and crossed the plate three times.

Mack Murnane and Ella Simmons both had two hits, including a double. Bunch and Bailey Bettencourt also collected two hits a piece.

The Buccaneers return to Mideastern Conference play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at South Brunswick.

BASEBALL

No. 7 Ashley 6, No. 1 South Brunswick 4

A two-out RBI double down the right field line from pinch hitter Jake White in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Screaming Eagles the lead for good.

Ashley (6-5, 2-2 Mideastern) led 4-1 after four innings, but South Brunswick (7-1, 3-1) scored three runs in the top of the fifth to even the score.

The bottom of the sixth inning began with a walk to Coleman Cross. He stole second base and scored the game-winning run on White’s clutch hit. 

A bases loaded walk from Cane Mehling allowed pinch runner Cole Ivady to cross the plate with the insurance run.

Senior southpaw Cam Jernigan earned the victory by allowing two earned runs with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings before reaching the 105-pitch limit.

Xander Davis got the final two outs to record the save.

Jernigan, Brent Avery, Tanner Berry and Kayleb Wray also hit doubles.

The Cougars were led by Walker Jenkins, who went 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch and one run scored. Banks Hartman and Grady Sotriffer both had two hits, while Luke Dilgard finished with two RBI.

Landon Lynch recorded seven strikeouts in his three innings, but he was saddled with the loss.

The Screaming Eagles travel to Hoggard at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. South Brunswick welcomes Laney on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

No. 5 Hoggard 2, No. 3 North Brunswick 1

Both teams got excellent pitching performances, but the Vikings were able to manufacture a pair of runs to secure the road victory.

Hoggard’s (6-2, 2-2 Mideastern) first run came in the top of the third inning when Tyler Schaudt reached on a bunt single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cam Mathews. 

Schaudt and John Mason were both hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh inning. Mathews then worked a walk to load the bases. That sent Damian Bounds to the plate, and he delivered the game-winning RBI single to right field.

North Brunswick (8-3, 1-3) scored its run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a single from Cody Callahan that plated Garrett Gore.

Chase Buscher scattered two hits with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Fellow junior Aiden McBride got the save by pitching the final 2 1/3 innings.

B.D. Lanier was the hard-luck loser. He pitched six innings and allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts. 

The Vikings host Purnell Swett at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Scorpions travel to West Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

No. 4 Topsail 9, No. 9 West Brunswick 3

For the second straight Friday night, the Pirates got a dominant performance on the mound from freshman Rhett Britt.

The Wake Forest commit allowed two runs on two hits with nine strikeouts in five innings to earn the victory.

His offense gave him an early lead when Cameron Rickabaugh led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and scored when Grady Swinson followed with a single to right field.

Topsail (4-5, 3-1 Mideastern) added two runs in the second and fourth innings before tacking on four in the sixth.

Rickabaugh went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. He was also hit by two pitches. Tatum Hayden also collected two hits and scored three runs. 

Sincere Ledbetter went 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and run scored for West Brunswick (5-6, 0-4).

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Pirates visit New Hanover, while the Trojans host North Brunswick.

No. 2 New Hanover 9, No. 6 Laney 1

The Wildcats sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run bottom of the second inning that gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Trey Stephens and Caleb Robles were both hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Conner Marren drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Bromley Thornton followed with a two-run double, and later scored on a single from Sean Smith.

Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate and also earned the victory on the mound by striking out 10 batters in 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

New Hanover (7-2, 3-1 Mideastern) got two hits from Thornton. Marren finished with two RBI, while Jack Shearin crossed the plate two times.

Cam McCotter reached base three times and drove in the only run for Laney (4-3, 2-2).

The Wildcats host Topsail on Tuesday night at 6:30. The Buccaneers visit South Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 12 Wilmington Christian Academy 17, Wilson Christian Academy 0 (5 innings)

Senior Trey Pierce tossed a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and only two walks to lead the Patriots to their fourth straight victory.

Pierce finished with 74 pitches, including 42 for strikes. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI and one run scored.

WCA (3-6) led 6-0 after two innings before adding eight runs in the third. 

Leadoff batter Matthew Naylor was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Isaiah Hunter collected two hits to go along with two walks. The UNCW signee crossed the plate twice.

Eli Perez finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Caleb Carroll went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Patriots host Wake Christian Academy at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Wake Christian 10, No. 10 Coastal Christian 4

The Centurions led 4-0 entering the seventh inning, but the visitors scored 10 runs on seven hits to seal the victory.

Dominic Libretto belted a pair of two-run home runs for Coastal Christian (4-5). Tyler Brooks, Jackson Travis and Jake Young had the other hits.

Next up is a home game against Thales Academy Apex on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 11 North Brunswick 2, No. 5 South Brunswick 1 (OT)

The Scorpions earned their first victory in the rivalry since April 16, 2019.

Cam Phillips evened the score with her goal in the second half. The game-winning goal was simultaneously struck by Esmeralda Dominguez and Hannah Jackson right in front of the goal.

North Brunswick (5-2-3, 1-0-1) has already surpassed its win total of four from a season ago.

They are back in action Tuesday at Ashley at 6 p.m. South Brunswick (3-2, 0-2) hosts West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 2 Hoggard 3, No. 3 Laney 0

A header from Rhodes Gould off a corner kick from Ella Johnson in the 27th minutes proved to the difference as the Vikings bounced back nicely from Tuesday’s overtime defeat.

Hoggard (5-1, 1-1 Mideastern) added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute off the foot of Ellis Kelly.

Reigning Coastal Preps Player of the Year Ella Johnson finished the scoring with 2:59 remaining on a shot from at least 30-yards out.

The Vikings play at New Hanover on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Laney (6-3-1, 1-1) welcomes Topsail at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 1 Ashley 6, No. 4 Topsail 1

Karina Peat and Savannah Manset each scored twice as the Screaming Eagles cruised on the road to remain unbeaten.

Ashley (8-0, 2-0 Mideastern) scored three goals in each half. Sophie Morvil and Kiley Peat also found the back of the net.

Emma Frazelle scored Topsail’s (6-2-1, 1-1) lone goal.

The Screaming Eagles host North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while the Pirates visit Laney on Tuesday night at 6.

No. 7 Cape Fear Academy 1, Asheville School 0

Eighth grader Naomi Shanewise stopped all three shots she faced to lead the Hurricanes to a hard-fought win.

Georgie McGrath put home the game-winning goal in the 68th minute off an assist from Delia McFarlane.

CFA (3-1-1) plays at defending NCISAA 3A state championship Forsyth Country Day on Saturday at noon.

BOYS LACROSSE

The Pirates improved to 7-0 on the season when they score at least 15 goals. 

Ronan McGuire had a big performance with four goals and three assist. Alex Davis added four goals and one assist.

Topsail (7-2) also got two goals and two assists from Zion Lee as well as two goals from Josh Bowen.

The other goals were scored by Noah Fell-Ranshaw, Joe Greco and Connor Hinson. Barrett Swinson dished out three assists.

Goalies Nolan Pfaff and Marco Ayala combined for 11 saves.

Next up for the Pirates is a home match against Laney at 5 p.m. Tuesday. 

Laney 15, Orange 9

Senior Carson Adkins finished with a team-high seven goals, and the Buccaneers outscored their opponents 8-2 in the second half.

Laney (7-2) also got three goals and three assists from Fields Woodard as well as a hat trick from Hutch Melind.

Juniors Brandon Dillen and Carter Warlick both finished with one goal and one assist. Noah O’Borne and Logan Shaw had two assists a piece.

Goalie Colin Willis was fantastic, finishing with 20 saves. 

The Buccaneers play at Topsail on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Mideastern Conference meet at Topsail (From Thursday)

Six Laney athletes claimed victories to help the team outscore Ashley by 23 points.

The Buccaneers were terrific on the track as Kateria Peters (400 in 1:02.6), Ella Warren (800 in 2:24), Isabella Borelli (1,600 in 5:37), Olivia Bufalini (3,200 in 11:35) and Kiley Canter (300 hurdles in 52.2) all crossed the finish line first.

Bailey Willard showed why she is the area’s top discus thrower by winning with a distance of 123-8. 

Laney won the 4×200 and 4×400 relays, while North Brunswick claimed the 4×100 and Ashley was victorious in the 4×800.

The only athlete to claim a pair of individual victories was Ashley standout junior sprinter Makayla Grice. She won the 100 in 12.1 and 200 in 25.8, which are fastest times in the area this season.

Teammate Aaliyah Marshall distance of 31-2 in the triple jump.

Topsail’s wins came from Helena Swain (100 hurdles in 17.5) and Chloe Dzierzynski (15-6 in long jump), while North Brunswick got victories from Macie Inman (5-0 in high jump) and Jasmine Colwell (37-3.5 in shot put).

Mideastern Conference meet at Topsail (From Thursday)

The host Pirates claimed a pair of relays and earned three individual wins to take the meet.

Max Colby had a time of 22.5 to finish first in the 200 meters. Owen Reece captured the 3,200 in 9:50.9, while Desmond Lee had a distance of 20-3 in long jump.

Laney edged North Brunswick by one point for second place. Noah Sandiford was victorious in both hurdle events, winning the 110 meter distance in 16.9 and 300 meters in 44.1

Jacob Gigliotti (400 in 53.6), Lukas Malek (800 in 2:07) and Daniel Kelmer (1,600 in 4:35) had the other wins for the Buccaneers.

In addition to finishing first in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, North Brunswick got victories from Timothy White (100 in 11.0), TT Green (6-0 in high jump) and Brandon Moody (46-7.5 in shot put).

Cooper Blanton (130-8 in discus) and Treyvon Doughty (39-5 in triple jump) had Ashley’s wins.
