BOYS SOCCER

New Hanover 4, Ashley 2 (OT)

Aidan Payne scored the game-winning goal on a free kick from just outside the box and the Wildcats remained unbeaten despite playing with only nine players at the end of the game.

Payne raced to a long ball and was fouled by the Ashley goalkeeper in the 92nd minute. He stepped up and buried the free kick by curving it over the wall and just inside the near post. A minute later, Payne completed his hat trick to seal the win.

Haze Matthews opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match by heading home a corner kick from Selden Baldwin, and New Hanover (9-0) took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Ashley (7-4) evened the score on a 30-yard missile from Keegan Peat, but the Wildcats regained the lead moments later on Payne’s first goal off a slick through ball from Charlie Letson.

The Screaming Eagles sent the match to overtime on a header from Bayron Arzu with less than two minutes left in regulation. 

The Wildcats visit West Brunswick at 4 p.m. Monday, while Ashley hosts South Brunswick on Monday at 5 p.m.

Hoggard 7, North Brunswick 0

Junior midfielder Joao Barboza Filho had a hat trick and senior midfielder Brooks Carpenter added two goals and one assist in the shutout victory.

Hoggard (9-2) led 3-0 at halftime before adding four more goals over the final 40 minutes. Kenan Leber and Guiseppe Marturano each put home one goal. Nick Nelson had an assist.

Gaolkeeper Andrew Stein stopped the only shot he faced.

Next up for the Vikings is a home match against Laney at 6 p.m. Thursday. North Brunswick (0-6-2) welcomes Laney on Monday at 5 p.m.

Topsail 3, West Brunswick 0

The Pirates completed the season sweep to move to .500 on the season.

Jason Colvin finished with a goal and an assist, while Caleb Bartelson and Caleb Miller also found the back of the net. Tanner Kelly and Will Bigham each had an assist for Topsail (4-4), which plays at North Brunswick at 5 p.m. Friday.

West Brunswick (2-9-1) hosts New Hanover on Monday at 4 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Topsail 17, West Brunswick 2

The Pirates cruised to another lopsided victory thanks to two goals and four assists from Mia DiNoto.

Lillian Austin put home a team-best five goals and added an assist, while Kate Matuza finished with one goal and five assists.

Madison LaValle had two goals and two assists, while Adrianna Kandabrow scored twice and dished out an assist. Tatum Riggins and Lexi Velasquez each found the back of the net two times.

Topsail (9-0), which led 12-1 at halftime, has won all nine of its contests by 10 or more goals. They have outscored their opponents 147-31.

Goalkeeper Morgan Conetta played all 50 minutes and made six saves. Julia Sydes and Iceseas Siebenthal both had one goal and one assist, and Katie Clark dished out an assist.

Both teams are back in action Monday at 6:45 p.m. The Pirates host Hoggard, while West Brunswick (1-5)  plays at New Hanover.

Ashley 12, New Hanover 5

The Screaming Eagles built a 7-3 halftime lead and continued to pull away for the road win.

No individual stats were provided.

Ashley (6-2) plays at South Brunswick on Monday night at 5. New Hanover (1-6) hosts West Brunswick at 6:45 p.m. Monday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Topsail 16, West Brunswick 5

Cooper Case put home four goals and dished out a pair of assists, and goalkeeper Nolan Pfaff came up with seven saves in the dominant road win.

Connor Hinson found the back of the net four times, while Brayden Velasquez chipped in two goals and six assists. Topsail (4-3) also got three goals from Alex Davis as well as two goals and one assist from Hunter Bradley. Joe Greco scored the other goal.

Ronan McGuire and Josh Bowen each handed out a pair of assists, while Drew Jones finished with one.

The Pirates host Hoggard on Monday at 5 p.m. West Brunswick (1-8) welcomes South Brunswick at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.
