BOYS LACROSSE

Topsail 17, Jacksonville 6

Ronan McGuire scored a team-high five goals, while Brayden Velasquez added three goals and four assists in the season-opening road victory.

Topsail (1-0) also got two goals a piece from juniors Josh Bowen and Cooper Seidner. Connor Hinson dished out four assists.

Zion Lee finished with two goals and one assist, while Alex Davis had one goal and one assist. Joe Greco and Owen Hoag found the back of the net once. 

Goalkeeper Nolan Pfaff made seven saves.

Next up for the Pirates is a road game at South Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Topsail 19, Jacksonville 3

Lillian Austin and Tatum Riggins both found the back of the net five times to help the defending Mideastern Conference champions open the season with a dominant road win.

Austin added three assists and 10 draw controls. Topsail (1-0) also got three goals and four assists from Taryn Ugliono as well as two goals and two assists from Riley Nee.

Martha Smith, Reagan Amiott, Logan Keenan and Avery White each scored once. Iceseas Siebenthal dished out an assist.

The Pirates host Croatan on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Terry Sanford 14, Laney 10

Senior Kira Eldridge scored six goals, but the Buccaneers suffered a season-opening road loss.

Laney (0-1) also got two goals and one assist from Lolly Maginnes. Caitlin Cronemiller and Kiarra Masnick both finished with one goal and one assist.

Goalkeeper Ava Kunza stopped nine shots for the Buccaneers, who play at New Bern on Friday night at 5.

SOFTBALL

No. 3 Topsail 11, No. 8 Trask 1 (5 innings)

The Pirates sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run third inning that put the game out of reach.

Freshman Emmy Clark had an RBI single before Olivia Visconti followed with a two-run double to right field that increased the lead to 4-0.

Visconti went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Clark finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Zoey Vincent collected a pair of hits and crossed the plate twice.

Topsail (2-0) got a terrific effort in the circle from Kennedy Sloan. The sophomore scattered four hits and struck out seven batters.

Chloe Barnhill doubled and later scored on an error for Trask’s (1-1) only run.

The Pirates play at Richlands on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Titans travel to South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday.

BASEBALL

No. 1 Ashley 14, West Carteret 4 (5 innings)

The Screaming Eagles batted around twice in a 14-run first inning that lasted 45 minutes.

UNCW commit Isaiah Hunter laced a pair of RBI singles in the frame. He also scored both times. 

Ashley (2-0) drew 10 walks and collected nine hits in four trips to the plate. 

Freshman Cane Mehling tripled home a pair of runs to increase the lead to 7-0. He scored when Branton Jernigan followed with another triple.

Cole Ivady finished with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jernigan, Tristen Odham and Maddox Green also crossed the plate twice.

Cam Jernigan picked up the victory by stroking out the side in his only inning of work.

The Screaming Eagles are back at home Friday at 5 p.m. against South Central.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 6 South Brunswick 7, East Columbus 0

Summer Rainwater had another big performance with six goals and one assist to help the Cougars cruise past the Gators for the second time this week.

In Tuesday’s 7-2 victory, Rainwater had a hat trick and one assist.

South Brunswick (2-0) also got two assists and one goal from Cassidy Oldham. Rebecca Savidge and Jenna Webster each dished a pair of assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Madelyn German stopped all three shots she faced to earn the clean sheet.

The Cougars don’t play again until March 12 against Cedar Ridge at The Brittany Showcase in Wilson.

BOYS TENNIS

Coastal Christian 9, Freedom Christian 0

The Centurions secured their second victory of the week by claiming all six singles courts in straight sets and sweeping doubles.

Don Evans rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Josh Robertson dropped only one game at No. 2, while Josh Montague (No. 1) and Ethan Hixon (No. 5) had identical 6-2, 6-1 scores.

Coastal Christian’s (2-0) other singles victories came from Tyler Spivey (6-4, 6-3 at No. 3) and Elijah Franck (6-1, 6-3 at No. 4).

Hixon and Evans won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles, while Robertson and Spivey lost only two games at No. 2. Montague and Franck teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1.

The Centurions host South Brunswick on Monday at 4 p.m.
