BASEBALL

No. 1 New Hanover 8, Whiteville 1

UNCW signee Bromley Thornton got his senior season off to a great start by earning the victory on the mound and also going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Thornton struck out the side in the first two innings. He allowed just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts in five innings before turning things over to freshman Tate Nelson.

New Hanover (1-0) wasted little time getting on the board. Shortstop Luke Nixon worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning and then stole second base. He crossed the plate on a sharp single to center field off the bat of Conner Marren.

Marren went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Caleb Robles also drove in a pair of runs.

The Wildcats added three runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away. Nelson and Jack Shearin each threw a shutout inning in relief of Thornton.  

New Hanover plays at South Central on Saturday at 3 p.m.

No. 8 North Brunswick 13, No. 11 Coastal Christian 2 (5 innings)

The Scorpions cruised at home by collecting 11 hits to go along with nine walks.

Cody Callahan led the way offensively by going 2-for-2 with a walk, double, one RBI and three runs scored.

Garrett Gore had a double, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored. Leadoff batter Trevor Lucas crossed the plate three times. 

North Brunswick (2-0) scored three runs in the first and third innings. They tacked on five in the second and two more in the fourth.

Four pitchers – Cook, Fisher Goodwin, Kaden Shepard and Aydean White – combined for nine strikeouts.

Travis Jackson and Jake Young scored Coastal Christian’s (0-1) runs in the top of the fifth inning.

No. 2 Ashley 10, Croatan 4

Senior Cam Jernigan’s red-hot start to the season continued with two more home runs in the road win.

Jernigan finished 4-for-5 with a double, five RBI and three runs scored. Through three games, he’s hitting an incredible .700 (7-for-10) with four home runs and 11 RBI.

Ashley (2-0) also got a terrific performance at the plate from sophomore catcher Tanner Berry, who went 3-for-4 with a walk, two stolen bases and three runs scored. 

Kayleb Wray led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run.

Cole Barnes earned the victory by recording eight strikeouts and allowing only one earned run in five innings. Xander Davis struck out four batters in his two innings.

The Screaming Eagles visit South Central at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

West Craven 14, No. 7 Trask 6

O’Mariyan Ennis went 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, but the Titans committed four errors in the defeat.

Trask (1-1) led 3-1 after the first inning. Ennis singled home Isaac Turner. Phil Williams and Ennis both crossed the plate on passed balls.

Conner Gore added two hits for the Titans, who play at Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 3 Topsail 8, No. 5 Coastal Christian 1

Battle at the Beach at Richlands

The Pirates jumped out to a commanding 5-0 halftime lead and added three more goals over the final 40 minutes.

Karli Hartman and Megan Hughes both scored twice, while Ryan Lambert added a goal and an assist. 

Topsail (1-0) also got one goal a piece from Anna Bigham, Zoey Kulas and Jersie Lawrence. Emma Frazelle and Josephine Rodriguez dished out one assist.

Goalkeeper Katie Mackleer stopped the only shot she faced in 55 minutes. 

The Pirates play Hunt on Saturday at 9 a.m. at SW Onslow. Coastal Christian (0-1) visits Croatan at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

No. 1 Ashley 7, Ravenscroft 0

Battle at the Beach at Dixon

In her first high school contest, freshman Kieran Bradley recorded a hat trick to lift the Screaming Eagles to a dominant victory.

Ashley (1-0) also got a pair of goals from Karina Peat as well as one a piece from Kenzie Farr and Ellie Zimmerman. Bryson Clendenning and Savanahh Manset both dished out two assists.

The Screaming Eagles take on Fike at 9 a.m. Saturday at Jacksonville.

No. 4 Laney 3, Hunt 2

Battle at the Beach at Croatan

Avery Lyden’s unassisted goal in the 60th minute proved to be the game winner.

Laney (2-0) evened the score at 1-1 in the 44th minute when Laney Parker scored off an assist from Kenzi Badawi.

Four minutes later, Olivia Duleba found the back of the net off an assist from Jasmine Hicks to put the Buccaneers in front for good.

Goalkeeper Caeli Sullivan made five saves.

Laney takes on Ravenscroft at 9 a.m. Saturday at Dixon.

No. 2 Hoggard 1, North Raleigh Christian Academy 0

Battle at the Beach at Jacksonville

Avery Kievit and Taylor Williams combined to make three saves in goal to help the Vikings pick up a hard-fought shutout victory.

Hoggard’s (1-0) lone goal was scored by Avery Fisher in the 50th minute.

The Vikings take on Fuquay-Varina at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Croatan.

No. 12 Trask 2, White Oak 1

Battle at the Beach at White Oak

Alina Sandoval found the back of the net twice as the Titans secured their second win of the week.

One of the goals was assisted by Riley Grace Parker. 

Trask (2-0) plays at Swansboro on Saturday at 11 a.m.

No. 10 North Brunswick 2, Lejeune 1

The Scorpions earned their first victory of the season behind goals from Esmeralda Dominguez and Cam Phillips. 

Hannah Jackson had an assist. North Brunswick (1-1-1) plays at South Columbus on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

BOYS GOLF

Madyson Scott Invitational

at Pine Hollow Golf Club in Clayton (Par 71)

New Hanover and Hoggard had sub-300 team scores for the second time this week to earn top-10 finishes in the 20-team event.

The Wildcats finished in fourth place with a 289. They were only one stroke behind Green Hope and three away from Broughton. Pinecrest shot a remarkable 283 to claim the title.

Carson Etters led New Hanover with a 1-under-par 70 to finish in a tie for fourth individually. The three other counting scores all came from freshmen – Will Chery (72), Will Davis (73) and Chris Etters (74).

Hoggard was led by senior John Logan’s 71. Maddux Cook (72), Dylan Lewis (76) and Gray Hudson (80) had the other counting scores. The Vikings had a team total of 299 to finish in sixth. 

Topsail, which finished 13th with a 328, got a pair of 79s from Bryce Koehler and Will Morgan.

Freshman Gregor Brock carded a 78 to lead South Brunswick, which placed 20th with score of 357.

GIRLS LACROSSE

North Brunswick 12, White Oak 3

Mila Alexander’s eight-goal performance gave the Scorpions their first ever victory.

North Brunswick (1-1) also got two goals a piece from Lucy Congema. Adriana Diaz and Stefani Guto put home the other goals.

The Scorpions host New Hanover at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Topsail 16, East Chapel Hill 12

Connor Hinson had a terrific match by scoring four goals and dishing out five assists for the victorious Pirates.

Josh Bowen, Ronan McGuire and Barrett Swinson all recorded a hat trick. Topsail (2-0) also got two goals from Zion Lee and one from Owen Hoag.

Lee dished out three assists, while Hoag had a pair. McGuire, Swinson and Alex Davis all finished with one.

Goalie Nolan Pfaff made 12 saves. 

The Pirates play at North Brunswick on March 14 at 7 p.m.

Ashley 15, Millbrook 9

The Screaming Eagles scored three goals in each of the first two quarters to build a 6-1 halftime lead. 

No individual stats were provided for Ashley (1-0), which hosts Laney at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

South View 13, No. 2 Laney 6

Sophomore catcher Bailey Bettencourt collected three of the Buccaneers’ seven hits in the season-opening home loss.

Bettencourt, Layla Carr and Makenzi Curry all had a double. Mack Murnane finished with two hits and a stolen base.

Laney (0-1) fell behind 4-0 after three innings. A two-run bottom of the sixth inning cut the deficit to 8-6, but South View scored five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Next up for the Buccaneers is a home game against Dixon at 6 p.m. Tuesday. 

Lumberton 17, No. 5 Ashley 7 (6 innings)

Freshman Vayda LeQuire went 2-for-4 with a double and her first high school home run, but the Screaming Eagles fell on the road.

Ashley (1-2) trailed 6-0 after two innings, but cut the deficit to one by scoring five runs in the top of the third.

Lumberton responded with three more runs of its own in the bottom of the frame.

LeQuire drove in two runs and scored twice. Griffin Pearce finished 3-for-3 with one run scored, while Ragan Martin had a double, two RBI and one run scored.

The Screaming Eagles host Whiteville at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

East Columbus 21, No. 7 North Brunswick 5 (5 innings)

Center fielder Blair Sampson went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored from the leadoff spot, but the Scorpions fell on the road.

Mary Williamson added two hits, including an RBI single in the top of the first inning that gave North Brunswick (0-2) a 1-0 lead.

Gracie Christianson belted a two-run home run in the third inning to cut the deficit to 8-5.

East Columbus put the game out of reach by scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Chynna Patrick went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI. Oklahoma State signee Karli Godwin was 2-for-2 with a double, home run and five RBI. She walked once and was hit by two pitches.

The Scorpions travel to Whiteville on Tuesday night at 6.
