BASEBALL

No. 15 Trask 6, Lumberton 5

First round Robeson County Slugfest at Lumberton

The Titans scored four runs in the first inning and held on to secure their second victory of the season. 

A Matix Wiler RBI single in the second inning increased the Trask (2-6) lead to 5-0. Trey Cheatham drove in the final run with a ground out in the fourth.  

A semifinal game against Purnell Swett at 7 p.m. Monday is next up.

No. 8 North Brunswick 10, St. Pauls 4

First round Robeson County Slugfest at Lumberton

Senior B.D. Lanier gave the Scorpions the lead for good with a bases-clearing double in the top of the seventh inning. 

North Brunswick (8-3) trailed 4-3 after six innings. Aydean White and Garrett Gore beat out infield singles. Josh Hauser was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lanier, who drilled the seventh pitch of the at-bat to left field to bring home all three runners. 

Lanier crossed the plate on a base hit from Carter Cox. The Scorpions added three more runs.

Dylan Stacks got the win by pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Even though he didn’t factor into the decision, Fisher Goodwin was outstanding in his 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. All eight outs he recorded came via strikeout, and Goodwin didn’t allow a hit. 

North Brunswick takes on Hoke County in Monday’s first semifinal at 4 p.m.

No. 10 South Columbus 10, West Bladen 3

South View Invitational

Junior second baseman Walker Sullivan was 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch, double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored for the victorious Stallions. 

South Columbus (7-3) got a terrific start from Tyler Thompson, who allowed three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts in six innings.

Ethan Cullipher collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Daquan Cox worked two walks and crossed the plate three times. 

The Stallions scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to grab the lead for good. A five-run fifth inning all but sealed the win.

Next up is a game against Overhills on Monday at 4 p.m. The game will once again be played at South View.

No. 12 East Bladen 2, Western Harnett 0 (First round Bulldog Invitational at Terry Sanford)

SOFTBALL

No. 6 East Columbus 11, Fairmont 1 (5 innings)

First round Robeson County Slugfest at Lumberton

The Gators got multi-hit performances from five players to cruise to their eighth consecutive win. 

Mackenzi Clemmons went 4-for-4 with two doubles, five RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Kylah Collins finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. 

East Columbus (8-1) also got two hits a piece from Sara Coleman, Gracie Coyle and Jenna King. Coyle crossed the plate three times, while Coleman and King scored twice. 

Coyle allowed an unearned run on two hits with seven strikeouts in the circle. 

The Gators will meet Purnell Swett at 4 p.m. Monday in the semifinals. 

Lumberton 2, No. 9 North Brunswick 1

First round Robeson County Slugfest at Lumberton

Senior Hanna Robinson pitched an outstanding game, but ended up as the hard-luck loser as the host Pirates won with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Robinson recorded five strikeouts and issued only two walks in 6 1/3 innings. 

North Brunswick (3-9) tied the score at 1-all in the top of the fifth inning when Gracie Christianson hit a two-out double to right field that allowed Adrianna Gomez to cross the plate. 

Gomez went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks. 

The Scorpions will try to bounce back when they play Hoke County in a consolation semifinal game at 1 p.m. Monday.
