SOFTBALL

No. 4 Hoggard 3, Midway 1 (8 innings)

Macie Ciamillo and Logan Ulrich both collected a pair of hits, and the Vikings capitalized on five Midway errors to secure the road victory.

Ciamillo belted a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the score at 1-all. She also struck out 11 batters and scattered just two hits in a complete game. 

Both of Hoggard’s (2-0) runs in the top of top of the eighth inning came off errors. 

Next up is a home game against North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

BASEBALL

No. 4 Ashley 11, No. 15 Wilmington Christian Academy 0 (5 innings)

Will Hartzell threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts and just one walk to give the Screaming Eagles their third win of the week.

Ashley (4-0) finished with eight hits, including back-to-back home runs from Quinn Bentley and Dylan Welch in the third inning. 

Bentley’s three-run bomb increased the lead to 10-0. He also worked a walk and scored twice. Welch finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 

Nate Carmack and Connor Tew both added two RBI, while Cane Mehling scored a pair of runs. 

The Screaming Eagles travel to Laney at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. WCA (1-2) visits Bethel Christian Academy on Monday at 4 p.m.

No. 5 West Brunswick 10, No. 11 West Columbus 1

The Trojans completed the season sweep by scoring all 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Linden Clemmons got things started with a double and advanced to third base on a single to left field from Luka DeRicco. An error allowed Clemmons to cross the plate and tie the score.

DeRicco scored what turned out to be the winning run on a base hit from Trey Evans. West Brunswick (5-0) sent 14 batters to the plate during the big inning that featured five hits, three walks and three errors.

Ty Walker went 2-for-2 with a double and two walks. Connor Bart worked three walks, while Garrett Powell had a single and two walks. 

Bart, Powell and Cooper Wilson all saw time on the mound and allowed just three hits with nine strikeouts. 

Both teams begin conference play Tuesday. The Trojans host Topsail at 6:30 p.m., while West Columbus (2-3) travels to Trask at 7 p.m.

No. 1 Hoggard 4, Farmville Central 1

A three-run top of the seventh inning kept the Vikings unbeaten on the young season.

Damian Bounds led off with a single to center field. Nikita Sutherland was hit by a pitch and Josiah Gillespie beat out a bunt to load the bases with no outs. 

Luke Vargo doubled home Bounds and courtesy runner Hunter Lohrli to give Hoggard (5-0) the lead. An error allowed Vargo to score the final run.

Vargo was the only Viking to finish with multiple hits. 

Tyler Jumper pitched the final four innings to get the win. He didn’t allow a hit and recorded seven strikeouts with just one walk. 

Next up is a home game against North Brunswick on Tuesday night at 6:30.

No. 8 Laney 5, Swansboro 0

The Buccaneers evened their record at 2-2 thanks to strong pitching performances from three players. 

Jason Sproull got the win by scattering two hits and striking out five batters in four innings. Luka Rumora had four strikeouts in his two innings, while Shark Baynard recorded the final three outs. 

Laney got on the board in the first inning Ayden Rogers hit a two-out single and scored on a double from Jake Foster.

Foster had another RBI double in the fourth to increase the lead to 4-0. 

A home game against Ashley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday awaits the Buccaneers.

No. 3 New Hanover 11, West Craven 4

Freshman Colton Creech finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored for the victorious Wildcats.

New Hanover (2-2) had 10 hits and scored at least one run in all six trips to the plate. Six of the nine starters crossed the plate at least once.

The Wildcats host South Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

No. 16 Coastal Christian 4, Epiphany School 2

Sophomore Noah Swanson led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field to put the Centurions on top 3-2.

Chase Davis scored an insurance run later in the inning on a double from Jay Forrester. Swanson and Dominic Libretto both went 2-for-4. Both of Libretto’s hits were RBI doubles.

Relief pitcher Kaden Falls earned the victory by allowing an unearned run and striking out six batters in three innings.

Swanson didn’t factor into the decision, but he allowed one run on one hit with seven strikeouts in four innings.

Coastal Christian (2-1, 1-1 CPIC) hosts Wayne County Day at 4 p.m. Tuesday. 

Marvin Ridge 6, No. 2 Topsail 4

Wake Forest commit Rhett Britt was 2-for-3 with a walk, home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the loss.

Ryder Willcox put Topsail (1-2) on top with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the first inning. 

Britt kept the game alive with a two-run homer in the seventh. The Pirates got the tying run on base, but a strikeout ended things.

Cuthbertson 4, No. 2 Topsail 1

Ryder Willcox had a big night at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a double and the only run scored for the Pirates. 

Willcox singled with one out in the top of the second inning, stole second base and crossed the plate on a base hit from Andrew Schmidt.

Topsail (1-3) opens Mideastern Conference play at West Brunswick on Tuesday night at 6:30.

GIRLS LACROSSE

New Hanover 9, Ashley 7

Leah Nelson’s five-goal performance gave the Wildcats their first-ever victory in the series. 

New Hanover (3-1, 2-0 Mideastern) had lost all 27 previous matches against Ashley (2-2, 1-1) since the sport became sanctioned in 2010.

Elsie Lewis and Blair Mickle both finished with one goal and one assist. Kaylie Clark and Ava Martin put home the other goals.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Wildcats travel to Laney, while the Screaming Eagles host Topsail.

BOYS LACROSSE

Laney 22, West Brunswick 1

The unbeaten Buccaneers led 6-0 after the first quarter and 14-0 at halftime. 

Twelve different players scored, led by three goals a piece from Carter Evanko and Carter Warlick.

Noah O’Borne and Logan Shaw both had two goals and three assists, while Houston Oliver and Ty Rutherford finished with two goals and one assist.

Laney (4-0, 2-0 Mideastern) also got two goals a piece from Jackson Clavadetscher and Jordan Tun. George Adams, Brock Lehocky, Cash Nix and Brody Willard put home the other goals. 

Rutherford and Gates Vaughn combined to win 22 of 25 faceoffs. 

The Buccaneers host New Hanover at 7 p.m. Tuesday. West Brunswick (0-2, 0-2) travels to Swansboro on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Hurricanes counted four scores in the 70s to earn a 20-stroke victory in windy conditions.

Spencer Mills and Logan Rogers both shot 2-over-par 74 to share medalist honors. CFA’s other counting scores were a 76 from Jude Aliah as well as a 79 from Cash Scerri.

Hoggard 147, Cape Fear Academy 149

9-hole match at Pine Valley Country Club (Par 36) from Thursday

Hoggard Dylan Lewis and Cape Fear Academy’s Jude Aliah tied for medalist honors after finishing with round of 1-under-par 35.

BOYS TENNIS

Fike 6, New Hanover 3

For the second day in a row, Augie Ballantine and Bryce Morrison picked up victories at the top two singles spots, but the Wildcats managed to take only one other court in the road defeat.

Ballantine rolled by a score of 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1, while Morrison earned a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 2.

The other points came at No. 2 doubles, where Ballantine and Cutter Morgan teamed up for an 8-4 victory. 

New Hanover (3-1) jumps back into Mideastern Conference play with a home match against North Brunswick at 4 p.m. Tuesday. 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Franklin Classical 55, No. 11 Southeastern Homeschool 51

NACA National Tournament Championship in Dayton, Tenn.

A late rally from the Cardinals came up short in the title game at the NACA National Tournament. 

Southeastern Homeschool (16-13) trailed 32-26 at halftime and 45-33 after three quarters. 

Max Brutus had a strong performance with a team-high 16 points. Blake Batts added 13, while Brice Griffin finished with seven.
