NCCSA 2A championship game at Wilson Christian Academy

In his final high school at-bat, senior Trey Pierce belted a two-out, two-run home run to left field to give the Patriots a walk-off victory.

It was the first state title for the WCA (16-8) since 2019.

The Patriots were down to their final out when UNCW signee Isaiah Hunter doubled. That brought Pierce to the plate, and he belted the second pitch he saw over the fence to set off a huge celebration at home plate.

A two-run bottom of the second inning gave WCA a short-lived lead. Vandalia Christian (14-5) plated a pair of runs of its own in the top of the third to grab a 3-2 advantage.

Ryder Whitacre had the only other hit for the Patriots. He got the start on the mound, but didn’t factor into the decision despite allowing only three runs and recording nine strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Eli Perez retired all four batters he faced to earn the victory.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Area athletes fared well at regionals, as 14 individuals and six relay teams qualified for next week’s state championships.

Pender junior Olivia Gurganus finished as the runner-up in three individual events at the 1A Mideast Regional. She cleared 4-8 in high jump and had distances of 15-3 in long jump and 32-2 in triple jump.

Teammate Grace Bordeaux crossed the finish line first in the 400 meters (1:02.63) and was third in high jump (4-8). Jamiah Johnson was second in the 100 (13.53) and third in the 200 (28.70).

The Patriots’ other state qualifier was Brianna Behal, who had a distance of 30-2 to finish third in triple jump.

Pender won the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. They were second in the 4×400 relay and third in the 4×800 relay.

Laney had a terrific day at the 4A East Regional, getting victories from Olivia Bufalini and Bailey Willard.

Bufalini had a time of 2:15.75 in the 800, while Willard captured the discus title with a throw of 126-11. She was also third in shot put (34-11.50).

Isabella Borelli’s time of 2:19.62 in the 800 was good enough for third place. She was also on the second-place 4×800 relay team.

Hoggard finished fourth in the 4×800 relay. Molly Parker (fourth in 1,600), Kylie Sasser (fourth in pole vault) and Ashlei Summers (third in 3,200) also qualified for states.

Senior Kaitlyn Obremski of Topsail was victorious in the 1,600 (5:03.96) and placed second in the 3,200 (11:10.95).

At the 3A East meet, North Brunswick’s Jasmine Colwell was the runner-up in both throwing events (113-8 in discus and 37-0.25 in shot put). South Brunswick’s Ellie Harrington placed fourth in the 3,200.

A pair of Trask runners – Ainsley Heath (second in 800) and Jayden Hoffman (fourth in 400) – kept their season alive.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Host Pender nearly won the 1A Mideast Regional thanks in large part to four individual wins and a pair of relay victories, but the Patriots were 1.5 points behind champion Voyager Academy.

Senior Mecca Carr-Bordeaux continued his dominance in the throwing events by claiming titles in discus (137-7) and shot put (47-0.50).

Ta’Quan Daniels cleared 6-2 to win high jump, while Owen Davis crossed the finish line first in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:29.66.

All four of the Patriots’ relay teams qualified for states. The 4×100 and 4×200 teams were victorious, while the 4×400 and 4×800 teams each placed third.

Christian Hayes was second in the 100 (11.51) and third in the 200 (23.50), while Aidan Murray finished third in the 1,600 (4:59.55) and fourth in the 800 (2:13.01).
