Junior Kyle McCarthy scored a team-high four goals for the Hurricanes, who earned their second consecutive state title.

McCarthy sealed the victory with his final goal, which came with 2:18 to play. He lead the team with 51 goals on the season.

CFA (13-2) led 5-3 at halftime. The advantage was cut to one on two occasions in the second half, but the Hurricanes responded both times with goals from Blake O’Keefe and Luis Gonzalez.

O’Keefe finished his high school career by scoring twice and adding two assists. Gonzalez found the back of the net twice and dished out an assist.

The other goal was scored by Noah Law.

CFA got an outstanding performance from goalie Kaleb Belle, who made nine saves.

The Hurricanes graduate eight seniors, but return three of their four top goal scorers.

BOYS TENNIS

No. 1 Cape Fear Academy 5, No. 3 Greensboro Day 1

NCISAA Division II State Championship

Eighth grader Grant Kleppinger secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the second state title in three years for the Hurricanes.

It was the eighth championship in program history.

CFA (16-1) grabbed a 3-0 lead after doubles. Hayes Gilbert and Ben Kane didn’t drop a game at No. 2. Kleppinger teamed up with Cole Stockman for a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 1, while Nikita Ivanov and Max Sherman had a score of 8-6 at No. 3.

The Hurricanes won the first set on four of the six singles courts. Ivanov increased the lead to 4-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Gilbert (6-4, 3-2 at No. 1) and Stockman (2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in 10-point tiebreaker) were both winning when Kleppinger sealed the victory.

SOFTBALL

No. 15 Topsail 1, No. 11 Wakefield 0 (9 innings)

Fourth round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

A two-out RBI single from shortstop Jaylyn Noble in the top of the ninth inning broke the scoreless tie and sent the Pirates into the 4A East Regional Championship Series.

Zoey Vincent beat out a bunt with one out to start the rally. She moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Kennedy Sloan.

Wakefield elected to intentionally walk Emmy Clark to get to Noble, but the move backfired.

On the third pitch of the at-bat, Noble hit a sharp ground ball past the first baseman and into right field. Vincent had no trouble scoring from second base.

Topsail (15-6) will meet No. 8 Apex in the best-of-3 series. The schedule will be released Sunday, but Games 1 and 3 (if necessary) will be at Apex. The Pirates will host Game 2.

It is the first trip to the East Regional Championship Series since 2016. Topsail has never played for a state title.

The Wolverines made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning. Three straight two-out singles from Kiersten Cox, Ariah Davis and Brooke Masingale loaded the bases.

Sloan got Brianna Riehle to fly out to center field to end the game. The junior pitcher continued her postseason dominance with a second straight complete game shutout. Sloan scattered six hits and struck out eight batters to lower her season ERA to 1.74.

Vincent had two of the Pirates’ four hits. Sloan singled to lead off the fourth inning, but was stranded at first base.

BASEBALL

No. 4 Wake Forest 2, No. 1 New Hanover 1

Fourth round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

***Click here to view a gallery of 36 photos from the action***

Two of the best teams in the state put on a terrific show for the fans in attendance at Buck Hardee Field.

UNCW commits Bromley Thornton (New Hanover) and Cooper Allen (Wake Forest) were outstanding on the mound.

Thornton threw his fourth complete game of the season, scattering five hits and recording five strikeouts. Both runs he allowed came on a two-out single from Carlos Diaz in the top of the first inning.

The senior righty finished the season 10-1 with a 0.76 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 74 innings.

Wake Forest (23-4) leadoff batter Ian Williams reached on an opposite field single. Following a sacrifice bunt, New Hanover (24-3) elected to intentionally walk slugger Luke Stevenson with a base open.

Williams stole third base, and Stevenson advanced to second on another ground out. That brought up Diaz, who hit a 2-2 pitch up the middle.

That was enough run support for Allen, who finished with six strikeouts over seven innings.

Allen worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the first inning by getting Caleb Robles to ground into an double play. Wake Forest turned four double plays on the afternoon.

New Hanover scored its lone run in the sixth inning after Luke Nixon drilled a triple off the top of the right field fence and scored on a sacrifice fly from Thornton.
