GIRLS SOCCER

No. 5 Trask 1, South Columbus 1

Kenya Lewis scored in the 33rd minute to even the score and help the Titans earn a draw.

The result gave Trask (14-2-1, 6-0-1 Waccamaw) a 1 1/2 game game over the Stallions with three regular season matches remaining.

Lewis had three shots go just over the crossbar in a second half that was dominated by the home team. 

Goalkeeper Caroline Metcalfe made a handful of critical saves. 

The Titans travel to winless West Columbus on Thursday at 5 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 7, No. 7 New Hanover 0

The Vikings cruised to their second victory in as many days by scoring three times in the first half and adding four goals over the final 40 minutes.

Ella Johnson and Ellis Kelly both found the back of the net twice. Johnson added an assist, while Avery Fisher finished with one goal and one assist.

Hoggard’s (14-3, 10-1 Mideastern) other goals came from Avery Barr and Kadie Blevins. Carlie Moroz dished out an assist.

Goalkeepers Avery Kievit and Taylor Williams shared the clean sheet. Williams faced a pair of shot and stopped them both.

New Hanover (6-6-3, 4-6-1 Mideastern) goalkeeper Bella Ellison kept the match from ending early by finishing with 21 saves.

Both teams return to action Friday at 6 p.m. The Vikings travel to Topsail, while the Wildcats welcome South Brunswick.

SOFTBALL

No. 6 Trask 16, No. 7 Pender 4 (6 innings)

Lauren Hall and Nilah Holmes each belted a home run, and the Titans scored 10 unanswered runs over the final two innings to secure a mercy-rule road win.

Hall finished 4-for-5 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Holmes was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

Chloe Barnhill, Jordyn Reece and Bling Shepard all collected two hits. Reece drove in three runs and crossed the plate three times, while Shephard finished with two RBI and three runs scored.

Trask (11-6, 6-3 Waccamaw) led 6-0 following Hall’s two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.

Kimora McAllister, Charleigh Rivenbark and Toni Bland all had RBI singles in the bottom of the frame for Pender (9-10, 4-5) to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The Titans answered with a four-run fifth inning before tacking on six runs in the sixth. Barnhill earned the victory by pitching a complete game with four strikeouts.

Pender was led offensively by Bland, who finished 2-for-2 with two RBI.

The teams square off again, this time at Trask, on Thursday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

No. 11 Laney 11, No. 22 Millbrook 6

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Caitlin Cronemiller and Avery Hoey tied for the team high with five points in the home victory that sent the Buccaneers into the second round.

Cronemiller had two goals and three assists, while Hoey scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists.

Laney (13-5) also got a hat trick and one assist from Lolly Maginnes as well as two goals from Ella Hawks.

Mia Shade scored the other goal and had four draw controls. 

Next up for the Buccaneers is a game at No. 6 Pinecrest on Friday at a time to be announced. 

BOYS LACROSSE

No. 18 Apex Friendship 16, No. 15 Laney 5

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Buccaneers went scoreless for more than 19 minutes to begin the game and could never catch up in a season-ending loss.

Senior Fields Woodard finally got Laney (13-7) on the board with 4:33 left in the second quarter. Three more goals cut the deficit to 6-4 at halftime.

Apex Friendship (11-9) dominated the second half to advance to the second round. They will travel back to Wilmington on Friday evening to face second-seeded Ashley.

Woodard dished out a pair of assists. The Buccaneers also got two goals from Luke Gordon as well as one a piece from Carson Adkins and Hutch Melind. 

BOYS TENNIS

No. 1 West Carteret 8, No. 16 South Brunswick 1

First round NCHSAA 3A playoffs

In his first postseason match, freshman Cooper Pittman battled to a 7-5, 7-6(4) victory at No. 4 singles to keep the Cougars from getting swept.

South Brunswick (6-12) managed to win only 10 more total games in singles and two in doubles.

No. 10 Cardinal Gibbons 6, No. 7 Hoggard 0

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Mideastern Conference champions dropped all six singles courts against the always strong Crusaders.

Freshman Bret Li fell by a score of 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3, while Wells Lee suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 5. 

Logan Tamadon (6-3, 6-2 at No. 2) and Ridge Earnhart (6-2, 6-3 at No. 6) both won five games, while Ashwin Varadarajan secured two games in each set at No. 5.

Hoggard concluded the season with a 13-4 record.
