Goals from freshmen Claire Furmidge and Priya Belle in the final five minutes gave the Hurricanes a thrilling victory that clinched the Coastal Plain Independent Conference title.

“In both games against them we were down 1-0, but we always feel like if there’s time left there is still a chance,” CFA coach Meade McFarlane said. “These girls always believe.”

With time winding down, the Hurricanes (17-1, 9-0) increased their intensity. Belle made a great run down the right side and was fouled just outside the box. McFarlane shouted for Furmidge to take the free kick, and she delivered in a big way by curling in a left-footed shot with 4:14 on the clock.

“I wasn’t going to take it because I had a free kick earlier in the game and it wasn’t the best,” said Furmidge, who leads the team with 17 goals.

Just over a minute later, the Hurricanes won a corner kick. Lucy Lauber played the ball to the back post. Coastal Christian (10-4-2, 7-2) goalkeeper Emily White collided with a defender, which allowed the ball to find the foot of Belle for the game winner.

“They had been dominating us for about 20 minutes until Claire scored,” McFarlane said. “We were on our heels, but we just kept fighting.”

CFA has now won 15 consecutive conference matches dating back to 2022.

After suffering a 3-0 loss to NCISAA 4A powerhouse Charlotte Latin on March 23, the Hurricanes have reeled off 11 straight victories. That should allowed them to receive the No. 1 seed for the upcoming NCISAA 3A playoffs. Brackets will be revealed Sunday afternoon.

The Centurions grabbed a 1-0 lead when Miranda Short scored on a rebound in the 65th minute. The visitors nearly scored five minutes earlier on a long-distance shot, but CFA goalkeeper Naomi Shanewise was able to leap and deflect the ball over the crossbar.
