No. 12 Topsail 17, No. 5 Heritage 5

Second round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Pirates dominated from the opening whistle to secure a road victory that put them into the third round for the third time in four years.

Connor Hinson and Barrett Swinson each had a team-high six points by scoring three goals and adding three assists. Joh Bowen put home five goals, while Ronan McGuire chipped in two goals and two assists. 

Topsail (17-4) also got two goals and one assist from Alex Davis as well as one goal and three assists from Zion Lee. 

The other goal came from the stick of Kayden Robles. 

Next up for the Pirates is a home match on Tuesday evening against No. 20 Leesville Road, which picked up a 12-4 win at No. 4 Chapel Hill.

Junior standout Lillian Austin won the opening two draws and scored each time to give the Pirates a quick 2-0 lead just 25 seconds into the match.

The reigning Coastal Preps Player of the Year led all scorers with seven goals. Topsail (17-3) also got five goals from Melina Toronto as well as three from fellow sophomore Avery White.

Logan Keenan, Madi Oakley and Martha Smith all found the back of the net once.

The Pirates are back in the Sweet 16 for the third straight season. They will take on the winner of No. 1 Hoggard/No. 16 Ashley on Tuesday evening.

GIRLS SOCCER

Junior goalkeeper Avery Kievit earned the clean sheet by finishing with seven saves.

Hoggard (15-3, 11-1) got one goal a piece from Ellis Kelly and Avery Fisher. The assists were handed out by Ella Johnson and Regan Williams.

Next up for the Vikings is a home match against South Brunswick on Monday at 6 p.m. Topsail (12-6-1, 7-5) welcomes North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Monday.

No. 9 South Brunswick 1, No. 7 New Hanover 0

Carissa Baker scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Cassidy Oldham.

South Brunswick (6-9, 3-9 Mideastern) lost the earlier-season meeting by an identical 1-0 score.

New Hanover (6-7-3, 4-7-1) goalkeeper Bella Ellison made six saves.

Both teams play Monday at 6 p.m. The Wildcats host Ashley, while the Cougars travel to Hoggard.

First round NCCSA 2A playoffs

The Patriots kept their season alive thanks in large part to a hat trick from Ava Gerlich.

Mallory Deutch added two goals, while fellow eighth grader Kayli Altobello-Clark scored the other WCA (12-5) goal.

SOFTBALL

No. 3 Hoggard 11, Freedom Christian Academy 0

For the second game in a row, senior catcher Sydney Ciamillo belted a home run to help the Vikings secure a victory.

Ciamillo’s two-run blast in the fourth inning increased Hoggard’s (16-7) lead to 7-0. She finished 3-for-5 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored.

Jordan Martin had four hits from the leadoff spot and crossed the plate four times. Macey Ciamillo and Alyssa Norris each collected two hits and two RBI.

Macey Ciamillo threw a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts.

The Vikings will now await their playoff seed and first round opponent. The 4A bracket will be released Monday.
